Examples

I am not opposed to the creation of such a language.
If such a language is to be created, perhaps we could use symbols from languages all over the world to create a new version of the International Phonetic Alphabet that is not western biased.
Along those lines, let's learn from Esperanto, but start fresh so as to not carry along any unnecessary biases.
For such a project to work, we would need collaborators from many different cultures.
I say we keep the number of characters to a minimum. Even so, I see no reason why we couldn't have some degree of international representation...
If we're going to create a new international auxiliary language, it may as well serve a potential purpose beyond spoken communication. Thus, develop in parallel a sign language, a braille system, and... anything else?

Cultural appropriation

Hello, Djbaniel. How ya doin'? :) Thanks for stopping by my page to drop me a note and for getting cultural appropriation off to a really good, running start. I rewrote portions of it and, hopefully have improved it a bit. I added text relating to the power relationships between originating and exploiting cultures, as it is central to the meaning of the term. (After all, we don't speak of "cultural appropriation" when commenting on the wearing of Western dress by other cultures. :p) As an African-American whose culture has been pimped mercilessly and virtually universally, I share your viewpoint about people looking foolish and what not, but I had to rework that portion a bit. It's probably not as effective, but at least its NPOV (neutral point of view) -- Wiki policy 'n' all. I see you're relatively new to the project, so WELCOME! I do not mind the ordering, but for all I can tell, you also deleted spice trade from the nomination. That is why I reverted it.Napoleonic wars should be given the full week, because it has a good chance of achieving featured status. If you can find images and fix everything else, we can talk about a rollover to a new topic, but leave it on for now.

The topic Napoleonic wars is absolutely correct, worthy a.s.o. The rollover was done on Sunday 7 by Maurreen and the next topic change will be next sunday, the 14th. Wikipedia Campus Ambassador needed

Hi! My name is Annie Lin - I'm the Campus Team Coordinator at the Wikimedia Foundation. I'm contacting you because you're listed as a resident of San Francisco, and we're currently looking for a friendly Wikipedian to teach students in a University of San Francisco class how to use/edit Wikipedia. This is a role titled the "Wikipedia Campus Ambassador," and you'll basically be doing in-class presentations about Wikipedia, running Wikipedia labs/workshops, and in general providing face-to-face Wikipedia help for the professor and the students in the class. The time commitment is about 3-5 hours a week (with variations throughout the semester), and for this particular University of San Francisco class, most of the workload will be between March and May.

Bay Area WikiSalon series kickoff, April 27

The last Wednesday evening of every month, wiki enthusiasts in the San Francisco Bay Area will gather to collaborate, mingle, and learn about new projects and ideas. We have two brief presentations lined up for our kickoff event in downtown San Francisco:

The Nueva Upper School recently hosted the first ever high school Wikipedia edit-a-thon. We will hear what interests them about Wikipedia, what they have learned so far, and what they hope to achieve.
Photojournalist Kris Schreier Lyseggen, author of The Women of San Quentin: The Soul Murder of Transgender Women in Male Prisons, will tell us about her work and how she researched the topic.

We allow time for informal conversation and working on articles. Newcomers and experienced wiki users are encouraged to attend. We will have beverages and light snacks.

Late breaking invitation to the Bay Area WikiSalon series, July 27 (Wednesday) - change of venue - tonight

Please join us in the Mission at Noisebridge (one time change of venue)!

We hope you can join us today, Wednesday, from 6 p.m. on, at our July Bay Area WikiSalon. This month only, we are going to be at Noisebridge, a hackerspace/makerspace 1.5 blocks from the 16th & Mission BART station (see the link for directions). Some of us will be working on the Wikipedia article on basic income. All info here. Some good news - we do not have to be as strict about advance RSVP at Noisebridge, so bring spontaneous guests! (Registering ahead of time is still helpful, as always, as it will help us plan ahead.)

Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

And sorry, I just now saw your edit at the bulletin-board. After having been reverted by me, the onus is on you to gather consensus before making the changes. And I just want to remind you of WP:AGF: to imply that someone might revert without giving due consideration, and warning them off via edit-summary, is exactly not assuming good faith. Lectonar's revert of your change to WP:Translation was appropriate, as are his comments about the edit summary.

Your knowledge of foreign languages and translation is relevant to any changes you wish to make to Translation policy. Please consider adding language badges to your user page, as explained at Wikipedia:Babel. Or if you don't wish to do that, can you briefly sketch out what your foreign language skills are and what experience you have in translation? I checked out your translation of the section Gloria Fuertes#Biography from the Spanish article and the translation of Nujood Ali from the French article, and they look like MT to me. Sidenote: Just glancing at the Gloria Fuertes article, I see errors that appear to have been introduced by the translation. "A mediados de los años 70" was translated as "In her mid-70s" when in fact it should have been translated as "In the mid-1970s." And "Aunque ella siempre se definió como" was translated as "Although she always was defined as" when it should have been translated as "Although she always defined herself as." I don't know the root of these errors, but they illustrate the need for a good understanding of the original to write a good translation. Calliopejen1 (talk) 22:13, 3 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

That's just for starters. Or a 'popular' neighborhood (≠ es:popular, a rube mistake; in this context it's more like 'working class'). Or 'drew [illustrated] her own story'. Or this gem: The Generation of 50 and Postismo, a literary group of postwar who joined late 40s and were part Carlos Edmundo de Ory, Eduardo Chicharro and Silvano Sernesi, and which also collaborated Angel Crespo and Francisco Nieva. It's also undesirable that the names of several magazines, Rumbos, Poesía Española, and El Pájaro de Paja, were translated indiscriminately into English, leaving the impression that they are English-language publications with those titles. Switching to French: in your translation from fr:Nojoud Ali, you wrote: "At the age of ten years, she obtained a divorce in legal history.": (...she obtained a historic divorce); "She was designated by the U.S. women's magazine Glamour, which has given the same honor her lawyer Shada Nasser, a specialist in human rights and feminist, born in 1964.": (She was among those named women of the year 2008 By Glamour, which gave the same honor...); "[S]he began to visit with her parents to escape on 2 April 2008": ([S]he took advantage of a visit with her parents to escape...); "On the advice of the second wife of her father, she went directly to court, only to seek a divorce.": (...she went directly to court by herself, to seek a divorce.); "Mohammed al-għadha [who] took it upon himself to host it temporarily": (Mohammed Al-Ghadhi [who] took it upon himself to lodge her temporarily); "..with the installation of her practice in Sana'a": (...when she moved to Sana'a); "..where she opened in the 1990s and first female cabinet": (...where she opened the first female law practice in the 1990s). My fellow more-multilingual Wikipedians, thank your comments above. All I can say is that this has been a somewhat embarrassing learning experience.

I am still not quite certain that worse than nothing is strictly correct, assuming we're talking about this or this type of machine translation.

On the other hand, some machine translation errors are indeed very bad. (Of course the examples in the section above were from the old even-less-accurate version of Google Translate.)

Currently when I think about all of the great articles which are nonexistent in other languages, it makes me cringe. I suppose that one prudent thing to do is to monitor the machine translation technology as it seems to finally be progressing quickly, after about eight years of stagnation.

The universal claim of worse than nothing is still logically a very high bar in the context of an 87% reduction of machine translation errors. Daniel.inform (talk) 05:02, 5 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

My intention certainly was not to embarrass you -- just to illustrate the limitations of machine translation. By the way, many of the errors noted above are still present (in that form or some variation) in the current Google Translate machine translation of the Spanish article. (I have not checked the French article, but I assume the same may be the case.) And just a side note re the "worse than nothing"/"does not aid the reader": readers are perfectly capable of using machine translation tools themselves. Of course machine translation in that context does aid the reader! But the extra step of copying and pasting a machine translation here is not helpful because it gives the reader nothing s/he didn't already have, it freezes in place errors that might be corrected when the machine translation improves, and readers may not know they are reading a machine translation--with potential attendant factual errors--particularly if grammatical mistakes are edited out by Wikipedians trying to be helpful. Perhaps one day Wikipedia can have integrated machine translation--with disclaimers about accuracy--where machine translation is viewable within Wikipedia itself. But I think we have a ways to go before we get there, and I don't think that copy/pasting machine translation in the meantime is a good solution. Calliopejen1 (talk) 17:15, 5 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Just a little more why I think "worse than nothing" is not that bad; for the moment, an article that does not exist in the english-language wikipedia creates no work for the editors of the english-language wikipedia, as it is per se non-existent here. As soon as it enters "our" Wikipedia, it becomes (as explained above) rather a net-negative, as it might contain factual errors (which are imho worse than grammatical or orthographical ones) which we assuredly do not want in an encyclopedia, and who are difficult to weed out. Spoke to another user about translations at the Salon, could've used your thoughts about it along the lines of what you have on your user page. Will you be able to attend the next one? Invitation to Local Wikimania Event in San Francisco this Friday

Hi!

Wikimania is happening and hopefully you're enjoying the sessions. While it's fairly last minute, you're warmly invited to participate in the local Wikimania-themed meetup in the Wikimedia Foundation office this Friday (tomorrow!). You will have to register in advance, but we would love to see more people from the WikiSalon community participate! For more information and registration, please check out meta:Wikimania 2022/San Francisco Meetup.

The event will involve hacking, teaching, learning, and celebrating and we'll have snacks. We will have the opportunity to watch live sessions at Wikimania together in the afternoon. The rest of the day we'll have opportunity to participate in the hackathon, and we may have some on-demand workshops/learning sessions.

In case we run out of space, it's first-come-first-serve so let us know soon! Hope to see you there.
