Archives Lawrence Sheriff SchoolYou seem to have edited back to a poorly written version of the Student Council section on the Lawrence Sheriff School page. Flonight has not left any further messages as yet, so I am posting this message to all those who edited the page in this period, and asking them to consider signing this section at Flonight's talk page indicating that they will abide by this request. Hopefully this will help move the situation forward, and enable the talk page to be unprotected (with any necessary warnings added) so that any editor (including those uninvolved in this) can comment on the proposed decision. Cydebot leaving CFD categoriesCydebot left two CFD categories on several new category pages when implementing CFR renames per Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2008 January 29#Category:Côte d'Ivoire people. There was some wikicode trickery going on to only categorize the page into Category:Main pages with misplaced talk page templates if the template was used in the main space, your bot moved the categories out of the wikicode to the base of the article, which broke the trickery. I think I have corrected it for one article , see here Unfortunately this has meant quite a few articles are now in Category:Main pages with misplaced talk page templates which should not be. I'm sorry to bother you, but your bot has caused me a little consternation because of an image of mine that it's flagged for deletion. The image in question is up for deletion because it has been copied over to the Wikimedia Commons. Now, that's not really a bad thing in of itself, but the user who moved it there (Sswelm) hasn't done a particularly good job, such that (a) it's not obvious that I created the image (which could cause trouble down the line if someone wants to query/attribute the image), and (b) the wikilinks that I used in my description of the image simply don't work in the Commons. Since my Wikipedia image is bot-tagged for deletion, information not present in the Commons version will be lost (in that special Wikipedia sense of "lost"). Now, I could tidy up the Commons version, but I don't have an account there, and I don't want to have to do this every time one of my images is (badly; and without informing me) moved there. Anyway, I'm not writing to ask for a solution, but just to point out that your bot might inadvertently be removing attribution and other information by preferentially deleting Wikipedia images over their (ostensible) clones in the Commons. If Commons users do their jobs properly this shouldn't happen, but that's not guaranteed (i.e. this isn't your bot's fault at all). Finally, as an aside, while your bot flagged my image for deletion on the image's discussion page, it didn't leave a message on my talkpage, which seems remiss. Cheers, --Plumbago (talk) 11:30, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

However, you did not check the destination categories. At least three of these destinations already existed -- Category:African American actors, Category:African American history, and Category:African American singers, but they contained {{category redirect}} templates pointing them to the same title with a hyphen. You didn't remove these now-invalid redirects, so when RussBot did its regular weekly run today, it duly started emptying out these categories and moving all the contents back to the old, deleted titles. I suggest that, before carrying out a category rename, you check the rename destination and make sure that it has the appropriate content. --Russ (talk) 10:15, 7 June 2008 (UTC) Image attribution error during transwikiHi, Cyde. Concerning your message on my talk page regarding commons:Image:Canal 035.jpg, attribution information is copied automatically by BetacommandBot from file history which listed Mintguy as original uploader. It seems that there is a missing file upload entry which caused that error. As I can see you have already corrected attribution info on Commons, so I guess that this settles this issue. Please, please have your bot check that the destination category exists and is not a redirect before carrying out any moves. --Russ (talk) 09:59, 3 September 2008 (UTC) You're invited......to the 5th Washington DC Meetup! WikiProject Novels is currently holding a roll call, which we hope to have annually. Your username is listed on the members list, but we are unsure as to which editors are still active within the project. If you still consider yourself an active WP:Novels editor, please add your name back to the Active Members list. Also feel free to join any of our task forces and take a look at the project's Job Centre to get involved! Next month we will begin the coordinator election selection process. We hope to have more involvement and input this time around! More news will be forthcoming. Thanks, everyone! Depending how this situation resolves, I will likely file an arbitration request to hopefully resolve this issue once and for all. You commented on Wikipedia talk:Requests for comment/Adminbots, stating that you ran an admin bot. To help get an idea of how widespread admin bots are, as well as get a uniform decision, I would like to ask: Do you still operate this bot, and does it operate when you are not present? Please reply on my talk page, thanks, Prodego talk 00:39, 17 September 2008 (UTC) Don't forget the roll call and to reactivate your membership. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 07:49, 17 September 2008 (UTC) Category "Negro League baseball" to "Negro league baseball"This is not an appropriate change. Who authorized this? Where's the discussion on it? Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 12:34, 17 September 2008 (UTC) I'm sort of ambivalent about the change myself. You may want to check the page history on WP:CFDW and see who put the change there. It was listed as a speedy move (which bypasses all discussion) because it was classified as a trivial capitalization change, but personally, I think it merited at least some discussion. Anyway, I think the reasoning behind this move is that Negro league baseball is a categorization, not a proper noun. There was no official "Negro League" in the same sense that there is a named organization called "Major League Baseball". Semantic, I know. But Wikipedia is rather adverse to capitalization for some reason, and someone figured the capitalization of "League" wasn't justified in this instance. --Cyde Weys 15:44, 17 September 2008 (UTC) Request for ArbitrationAn Arbitration request has been made at Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration regarding your running of an unapproved bot. Prodego talk 19:06, 17 September 2008 (UTC) This has already been handled multiple times at ANI, BAG, and others. What exactly are you intending to accomplish with this? --Cyde Weys 19:14, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
CydeBotHi I'm an Admin on Arabic wikipedia and there was a discussion about using a bot to generate a list of article for speedy deletions. Can you point me out to the tools you use to operate your bot to do this. Thanks in advance --Histolo2 (talk) 10:15, 19 September 2008 (UTC) Okay, so you have a category of items up for speedy deletion and you want to turn them into a list? It's pretty easy. I wrote that functionality for pyWikipediaBot, so it won't require any custom coding. You'll need to get the framework (you'll probably want to find a bot operator on the Arabic Wikipedia who has a GNU/Linux server handy), and then add a line to crontab to regularly update the list. It would look something like this:
Apologies if that isn't exactly correct; my server is actually down at the moment, so I can't tell you if this is exactly how I'm doing it, but I'll update you on that later. If you can't find anyone with a GNU/Linux server, it's possible to run this on a Windows desktop, but there are some caveats:
--Cyde Weys 14:28, 19 September 2008 (UTC) Tv neilsen cydebot editsA series of edits made by cydebot refer to OTRS ticket #2008091610055854. Hmm, what's this about?--Knulclunk (talk) 01:53, 20 September 2008 (UTC) Nielsen Media Research is claiming that their regional categorization system is a creative, proprietary work, and that we are infringing on it. They sent us a DMCA takedown notice and we have decided not to fight it. --Cyde Weys 01:57, 20 September 2008 (UTC)
Can we see the DMCA notice, or the OTRS ticket? Just curious...--Knulclunk (talk) 04:04, 20 September 2008 (UTC) You may want to see and comment at the discussion here.--Jorfer (talk) 22:04, 21 September 2008 (UTC) According to Bastique, "the list of markets in the United States by Neilsen rank on the original article" is the only thing Nielsen complained about. Can you explain why you deleted the templates? Thank you. --NE2 15:00, 23 September 2008 (UTC) The discussion was started when the OTRS ticket first came in. The discussion included Bastique and the above-mentioned other two individuals. Bastique left shortly thereafter. After he left, the conversation turned to what other cleanup was required, and the general consensus was that the templates and the categories had to go as well because they contained the same information, just arranged in a different format. Please stop trying to paint this as some sort of rogue/unilateral deletion by me. I wasn't even around for the discussion; all I did was implement the result of it because I was the first person everyone thought of when the topics of category deletion and template deletion came up. --Cyde Weys 18:41, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
Category changes without a clear consensusNo one on the project pages which this affects have been told about the so called discussion (Such as here[3]). Really it's only an CfD with no real consensus and should be undone with the CfD relisted and those project notified. Bidgee (talk) 05:28, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
Have you spoken with Good Olfactory yet? He's the one who listed these moves on the CFD working page. It's possible he wasn't aware of the previous CFD discussion. I'm reverting the bot's changes now. --Cyde Weys 13:25, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
Thanks to Cyde for letting me know about this discussion—no one else had told me anything about it. There was some discussion on the speedy rename page about whether or not these were speediable; those who initially questioned it said they made several inquiries to WikiProjects and then got back to us about 5 days later and said that due to the non-responses they received it was probably OK to rename them via speedy, so I'm not sure where the communication broke down there. Good Ol’factory (talk) 03:29, 26 September 2008 (UTC) CydebotIs there some sort of bug that makes the bot unable to delete a category when it has a talk page? This is not a new issue with the rewrite; I've noticed before that some aren't deleted and the only potential reason I can come up with is they are the ones that have talk pages. Good Ol’factory (talk) 03:32, 26 September 2008 (UTC) Oooh, good eye. I hadn't noticed this. I'll have to do some testing and get back to you on that, but yes, at first glance, it definitely looks like this could be the reason. --Cyde Weys 03:34, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
I cannot confirm this bug? I just ran a test and Cydebot successfully deleted both the category page and its talk page. I'm going to guess that there was some error in the revision of the PyWikipediaBot framework I was using, which I hadn't updated in many months. In preparation for the recent BFRA, however, I rewrote all of the code and got the latest version from SVN, and this problem seems to have disappeared. If you do notice it crop up again please let me know. It may be triggered by some condition more specific than a category talk page existing that my test did not duplicate. --Cyde Weys 20:42, 30 September 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for looking into this, Cyde. I'll let you know too if I see it happening still. Good Ol’factory (talk) 20:49, 30 September 2008 (UTC) Ahah! I figured it out! It turns out this was occurring on category removal, not category renaming. It looks like someone (I have no idea who but it could've easily been me) added the appropriate code to delete the talk page to the move robot but not to the remove robot. I've rectified the omission and committed the fix to the PyWikipediaBot source repository. Now Cydebot really has no outstanding bugs. --Cyde Weys 02:40, 2 October 2008 (UTC) Your recent bot approvals request has been approved. Please see the request page for details. When the bot flag is set it will show up in this log. Maxim(talk) 19:17, 30 September 2008 (UTC)

Congratulations on the Featured Article! I'm glad that things turned out well. And I'm touched that you remembered this after so long. It's good to know not all of my advice is useless :-P Cyde Weys 15:18, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
Pseudoscience in musical instrument classificationGood luck getting rid of the "physics"-based classification system from musical instrument classification. Just wondering, but do you still need Category:Test2? It just popped up in CAT:SD with a {{db-test}} on it, and figured it'd be best to ask here before deleting it. Cheers. lifebaka++ 02:02, 22 October 2008 (UTC) User Undoing Cydebot EditsHi, got a heads up for you. A month or so ago, Cydebot made numerous edits to TV Station articles with the summary: "Removing TV region templates per DMCA Takedown Notice from Nielsen Media Research, OTRS ticket #2008091610055854. " Today, User:66.102.80.212 has been going through and undoing those edits. As I am not sure of the status of the OTRS ticket, I don't want to go blindly reverting the IP's edits, in case the reason is no longer applicable. I thought I'd drop you a note though, in case this is incorrect. Thanks! OhNoitsJamie Talk 17:28, 25 October 2008 (UTC) The template that is being re-added to the articles is not the same one that was removed. It has been recreated since the deletion, presumably without the copyright-infringing content. I just wish the non-logged-in user had picked a better edit summary. --Cyde Weys 03:19, 26 October 2008 (UTC) Wikipedia announces launch of new Valued pictures projectThe project goes live for nominations on 1 December 2008 at 0:00 UTCThis Wikipedia Valued pictures project sets out to identify and encourage users' efforts in providing valuable images of high encyclopedic value, and to build up a resource for editors from other Wikimedia projects seeking such educational images for use online. A Wikipedia admin trolling on FreeNode IRC?Is it really appropriate for you to be trolling on Freenode? Granted, your non sequiturs make it appear that you're drunk, but perhaps you should step away from the computer. <Snip a bunch of IRC channel logs> —Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.179.229.138 (talk • contribs) Yeah, I really have no idea what you're talking about. While I have been known to hang out in the ##astronomy channel on FreeNode, I've never heard of one "Lando_SpacePimp", and I'm certainly not him. He's just some random troll on the channel, apparently. All of the channel admins mentioned in the chat logs that you pasted can vouch for me as a member in good standing of the channel, and will confirm that I am not him. So may I ask where you got this silly notion that I'm Lando_SpacePimp? And did you really think this was the best way to address it? --Cyde Weys 16:10, 3 November 2008 (UTC) SubcatsHe suggested to ask you if your bot can help.
