Your actions are so wrong

You are so wrong in moving my Zara Rutherford article to userspace. Just a few weeks after you did, I defied you and now the article is on the main Wikipedia page. When you take aggressive action, you can kill the spirit of Wikipedia editors. Only because I defied you and risked being blocked by defying you did I help Wikipedia with an important article. Zara Rutherford is the article. She just made world history by being the youngest woman to fly solo around the world.

Hello. I'm wondering what I can do to allow the recent entry I made on former Florida Attorney General Charlie Crist. I'd never heard of the man until this weekend, when a Netflix documentary about a man named Lou Pearlman had a section dedicated to him (entitled Crist Almighty) and his actions. • The template {{db-afc-move}} has been created - this template is similar to {{db-move}} when there is a redirect in the way of an acceptance, but specifically tells the patrolling admin to let you (the draft reviewer) take care of the actual move.

"Speedy keep" here

How is that an invalid reason to vote speedy keep? My thought was that The nomination is completely erroneous. No accurate deletion rationale has been provided. as you claimed "There has not yet been a 'Battle of Kiev'" citing WP:NOTCRYSTAL, which is an inaccurate deletion rationale since the article stated fighting has occurred inside Kiev Oblast. Additionally, how is my vote invalid while Elijahandskip's "Speedy Keep per reasons above" is? 9^3 (talk) 04:49, 25 February 2022 (UTC)

The article is fairly uncertain in how it characterizes Kiev Oblast and Kiev the city, so I still had the argument. Also, I was on mobile at the time, so I only saw the one reply, sorry about that! Curbon7 (talk) 04:54, 25 February 2022 (UTC)

Battle of Vasylkiv

Hello, rather than arguing on the Battle of Vasylkiv page I want to discuss this here. Your arguing, that the US is a unbiased third party that confirms the 2 Russian Il-76 were shot down. There are no vidoes, photos or other evidence suggesting that this is a confirmed fact. Only Ukrainian sources and US officials that anonymous as far as we understand. Attack/Battle of Berdiansk

Hello, When you renamed the "Attack on Berdiansk" to "Battle of Berdiansk," you put a warning that (Do NOT make a controversial page move without first starting a WP:RM. This is a warning to everyone, myself included. WP:ARBEE is applicable to all.) Was that a warning for future changes or because the page was previously changed (by me) to "Attack on ..."? I don't want to fight about it, just to know if i was wrong to make that alteration, so i can avoid doing it again in the future. RGoes (talk) 01:02, 1 March 2022 (UTC)

At this moment with Ukraine stuff, renaming articles without getting consensus via a WP:RM first is not a good idea, as this situation is very fluid and constantly changing, and we don't want to have the risk of a WP:Move war occurring between editors. I actually don’t doubt you have heard about discretionary sanctions, but was under the impression when I left this one earlier that I had to give one to everyone involved, like you have to notify everyone at NPOV. I have also realized that you have an extensive talk history and I didn’t (and don’t want to) comb it to see if you already have have one for Eastern Europe. If you do then please feel free to remove it. In fact, feel free to remove it even if you haven’t. All you have done that I think is wrong is to vote somewhat over hastily on a dishonest RFC, relying on the requestor’s representation of it, and this is not the hill I want to die on. We can discuss the RfD further if you like — I think if anything you should have voted merge and will be happy to explain why if you like — but my main point here is that you got the above notice because I was at the time under the impression that everyone had to get one, so sorry about that Elinruby (talk) 10:02, 25 March 2022 (UTC)

Then go over by yourself to Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Optional RfA candidate poll and click the bar at the page's bottom which invites you to "Start a poll on your chances of passing RfA". If you need guidance, it's wise to go to the recent archives and look at how candidates have introduced themselves and how each discussion has developed. I want to emphasize: this is a job interview, sort of screening to see if you GET to the broader interview, the RfA. Things you say, jokes you make, history you disclose, WILL BE read and read again by strangers. We had a sockpuppet of a banned editor come within hours of getting the mop this last year, so many will come to the broader RfA process with major skepticism. In the online poll, you will get the best advice one could expect from the small (but austere) group of page watchers on the poll. Supposing the poll likes you as much as we do, we'd need to find you some first class nominators. Pending results of the online poll I'd be happy to nominate but the process will go easier if more legendary editors choose to nominate. You might get offers to nominate at the poll. Just so we're clear, the online poll isn't really an interview. You will introduce yourself and put yourself forward for examination. They won't ask you that many questions. Strangers will look at your user and talk pages, histories and archives. Folks will pull up your contributions, then filter and examine what such edits say about the person making them. This can be a time consuming process. I spent an hour before I sent my first message to you. Leek and A.C. wouldn't have commented with looking well at your data. People at the poll may spend more time and be better at reading such things. Then those watching will give blunt assessment. Because of the well-informed and vastly-experienced sort of participants, they pretty much hit the center of the dart board reliably. So this is more an objective assessment. If you're who you represent yourself to be, then they'll find plenty of things about you to like and perhaps a few places where improvement, confession or a waiting period might be useful. Reading is always useful. Here's an unexpectedly useful reading list: Wikipedia:Arbitration/Index/Principles. It's a lot, but I think of it as a calendar thing. I read one every day. In retrospect, I would have said less than more. Right now, get hooked up with two factor authentication. And consider strengthening your email and general security passwords in the next few weeks. Question

“Also, we do allow the use of non-English sources (WP:NOTENG).” I am struggling to find an interpretation of this that is other than “we do not allow the use of non-English sources”. Please help me with this? If you are already aware that sources can be in French or German or Ukrainian, that is good. I am just not entirely sure what I misread there. Aha. I was fooled by the way you said they weren’t. If this was just a shortcut for saying that a tweet probably doesn’t count as an RS anyway, and thus isn’t eligible for for that policy to apply, well and good, i was just...confused. Getting gaslighted a lot right now and it is making me literal, lol. As in gee, I actually use non-English sources quite a bit?Anyway, thanks for clarifying. (lurker speaks): I hope I am not an en.wikipedian, but a wikipedian. Western English-speakers (especially "my fellow Americans") tend to be somewhat closed-minded to non-English sources, but in many cases the best sources are in a language closer to the subject matter. IMHO, don't shy away from using reliable non-English sources when available, so long as the page text and appropriate citation is written according to MOS. BusterD (talk) 22:38, 3 April 2022 (UTC)

Right. But (to use an example that frequently occurs in my life) if the topic is let’s say a 7th century battle in Provence, or a 15th century castle in Normandy, the only source is often the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. I would not be required to limit myself to what it might not say in the Encyclopedia Britannica. I am sorry, I know I am being pedantic, but I have been told otherwise so many times that I feel the need to try to improve awareness on this. Curbon7 was right not to add breaking news to a sensitive page based on a tweeted video in Ukrainian; I just felt a need to take issue with the parenthesis. Elinruby, ah so that's where the confusion came from! WP:NOTENG is just one of the shortcuts for Wikipedia:Verifiability#Non-English sources, which is the policy that we're discussing and are all in agreement on. Teyora - Development first look!

Hi! I'm Ed6767, the original creator of RedWarn, now one of the most popular tools on the English Wikipedia that's been used by over 1,000 Wikimedians to make over 300,000 edits since mid-2020 that's been praised for its user friendliness and ease of use, but criticised for its limited functionality. I'm leaving this message as I think it may be of interest here - I left the RedWarn project in November to develop Teyora, my successor to RedWarn (alongside Chlod's UltraViolet). It's a new in development web app that uses some of the latest web technologies to create a highly extendable all in one editing tool with a focus on administration, counter vandalism and general patrolling - not to mention, it'll work on every Wikimedia project without any prior configuration and can be used by any user with at least auto-confirmed rights*. Now, I'm ready to give the Wikimedia community a first look at what I've been doing over the past six months and what to expect going forward.

BusterD, Yeah that was a weird way for me to have said there's a lot going on here, and it may be worth going further than a DYK-TBAN. I've had personally few interactions with this user, but their noticeboard mentions have been wild to say the least, to the point it's probably best that it be a full report. Thanks for the PROD suggestion at Battles of Kruty (2022). After I reviewed it, I think that there might be a case for the article now even though it was basically a "snow delete" at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Kruty skirmishes. It may well be that a discussion will yield that same result, or maybe not. If you still believe the article should be deleted, please start a new AFD. My reason for making this call is because even though a relatively short period of time has passed, a lot has happened. New Page Patrol newsletter May 2022

New Page Review queue March 2022

Hello Curbon7,

At the time of the last newsletter (No.26, September 2021), the backlog was 'only' just over 6,000 articles. In the past six months, the backlog has reached nearly 16,000, a staggering level not seen in several years. A very small number of users had been doing the vast majority of the reviews. Due to "burn-out", we have recently lost most of this effort. Furthermore, several reviewers have been stripped of the user right for abuse of privilege and the articles they patrolled were put back in the queue.

Several discussions on the state of the process have taken place on the talk page, but there has been no action to make any changes. The project also lacks coordination since the "position" is vacant.

In the last 30 days, only 100 reviewers have made more than 8 patrols and only 50 have averaged one review a day. There are currently 822 New Page Reviewers, but about a third have not had any activity in the past month. All 848 administrators have this permission, but only about a dozen significantly contribute to NPP.

This means we have an active pool of about 450 to address the backlog. We cannot rely on a few to do most of the work as that inevitably leads to burnout. A fairly experienced reviewer can usually do a review in a few minutes. If every active reviewer would patrol just one article per day, the backlog would very quickly disappear.

If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, do suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.

Battle of Bakhmut (2022)

I picked this off a list of articles needing a copyedit, and would like to get it to where I feel comfortable taking off the tagging. I see you did a re-write on it and really haven't found much wrong with it (in comparison to what the talk page originally said). Just the sort of minor typos that are common on a heavily edited page. But I did have one question I would like to ask you because I am told you are pretty good at policies, and are apparently familiar with the article.

The dab link at the top (Battle of Bakhmut (1918-1919)) is a redlink. I don't recall seeing this before. I can see why it might be useful; I am just wondering whether you know whether MoS has anything to say about this. Could you please ping me in any reply, or answer on my talk page if you prefer? Flag icons in military conflict infoboxes

Hi Curbon7, at Battle of Ivankiv you reverted my edit where I have removed unnecessary flag icons with the comment: Battles are an exception to MOS:INFOBOXFLAG, see for example Battle of Gettysburg. Battles are not an exception to the "rule" (ie the broad community consensus) and WP:MILMOS#FLAGS is consistent with that at MOS:INFOBOXFLAG. In general, ... icons convey useful information to the reader, or are they merely decorative? Icons that differentiate among several parties (for example, icons used to indicate commander allegiance in Battle of the Atlantic (1939–1945)) are likely to be useful, while icons that convey irrelevant or redundant information are usually not. When there are only two belligerents sides (as at Ivankiv), flag icons serve no useful purpose and their removal is consistent with the guidance. On the other hand, if there is at least one co-belligerent on one side and entries in other fields where the co-belligerents are need to be distinguished then flag icons can usefully convey this information (see Battle of Buna–Gona as an example). That WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS, such as Battle of Gettysburg, only carries weight if it represents "best practice". While Battle of Gettysburg is a GA, the infobox when it was promoted and reviewed are substantially different from that at present and is no longer compliant with guidance on this particular issue and some other matters (particularly such an extensive list of leaders which would be inconsistent with the advice at WP:INFOBOXPURPOSE and the template documentation). The infobox at Gettysberg no longer represents best practice.

Part of the edit at Ivankiv you reinstated entries to the unit parameter which simply stated the "armed forces" of each country. This is redundant information and therefor not consistent with WP:INFOBOXPURPOSE. Furthermore, an hierarchical list starting with a countries armed forces, then a particular branch and so on is also redundant information when actually reporting a particular formation or unit. It is not consistent with WP:INFOBOXPURPOSE

You appear to have made similar reverts to at least these articles: Battle of Brovary, Capture of Chernobyl and Battle of Slavutych where the same considerations were applied. Cinderella157, Ok. I'm not a frequent editor of military history, so I'll take your word on it. The only one I don't see is I do think there should be a flagicon for the belligerent parameter, but for the other parameters I can totally see how that's just clutter (I'm assuming an exception is when there are different national entities on the same side, right?). RE: the part about the units, again, not a frequent editor here so I'll take your word for it; in this case, I think it would be preferred to use the brigade involved (with the individual regiments written into the prose instead). You are correct, flag icons can be useful if there are different nations on the same side. I acknowledge that you think they should be used in the belligerent field but not elsewhere; however, it is usually a quantum choice - and I doubt that most inexperienced editors would understand the distinction you would make. You only have to look at the MOS:FLAGCRUFT in some of these articles, where every possible flag is used. I would generally agree with you about units though it can be a little subtle. We certainly don't need every step in the heirachy from the "armed forces" down. If a formation (say a brigade or division) was the force engaged, then we wouldn't list the individual units making up the formation. If though, a brigade had one of its three combat battalions detached, we might list the remaining two under the brigade in the infobox. The key point (per WP:INFOBOXPURPOSE) is to not bloat the infobox with unnecessary intricate detail. Having said that, I would generally agree with your view on this. Hello Curbon7,

Backlog status

At the time of the last newsletter (No.27, May 2022), the backlog was approaching 16,000, having shot up rapidly from 6,000 over the prior two months. The attention the newsletter brought to the backlog sparked a flurry of activity. There was new discussion on process improvements, efforts to invite new editors to participate in NPP increased and more editors requested the NPP user right so they could help, and most importantly, the number of reviews picked up and the backlog decreased, dipping below 14,000[a] at the end of May.

Since then, the news has not been so good. The backlog is basically flat, hovering around 14,200. I wish I could report the number of reviews done and the number of new articles added to the queue. But the available statistics we have are woefully inadequate. The only real number we have is the net queue size.[b]

In the last 30 days, the top 100 reviewers have all made more than 16 patrols (up from 8 last month), and about 70 have averaged one review a day (up from 50 last month).

While there are more people doing more reviews, many of the ~730 with the NPP right are doing little. Most of the reviews are being done by the top 50 or 100 reviewers. They need your help. We appreciate every review done, but please aim to do one a day (on average, or 30 a month).

TIP – New school articles

Many new articles on schools are being created by new users in developing and/or non-English-speaking countries. The authors are probably not even aware of Wikipedia's projects and policy pages. WP:WPSCH/AG has some excellent advice and resources specifically written for these users. Reviewers could consider providing such first-time article creators with a link to it while also mentioning that not all schools pass the GNG and that elementary schools are almost certainly not notable.

AmericanEditor350, You have the right spirit and the right character, so I'm sure you'll develop into a fine editor. I understand our extensive notability guidelines can be confusing and sometimes even contradictory. Everyone struggles a bit when they're first starting out, so don't worry too much. I'd recommend doing easier tasks on articles that already exist, and then gradually building up from there. Hi Dr. Blazer! A few things to note: (1) Clark is notable per WP:NPOL; as such, as long as a sources is cited which confirms this, it is good to go. (2) Articles older than around 90 days should generally not be draftified, per WP:DRAFTIFY; other routes, such as AfD (if it's non-notable) should be taken instead. (3) Articles that have gone through the New page patrol process should not be draftified, as this indicates that a reviewer believes it to be sufficiently notable; thus, as in the last one, other routes should be explored if you feel it is unsuitable. (4) Consider adding the following gadget: User:Mr. Stradivarius/gadgets/Draftify. It is very convenient for draftifying articles so you don't have to do as much manual work! This book was prepared by the team of the State Institute of Art Studies (Государственный институт искусствознания) employees, edited by Elizaveta Uvarova (Doctor of Sciences in the field of art history (1985), Professor (1993)), and published in 2004. It's the main scientific work dedicated to Russian and Soviet XX century estrada. There is no reason to doubt the reliability of this source. The article dedicated to estrada duet Rudakov & Nechayev is on the pages 584-585. Also this estrada duet is mentioned on the page 322, in the article dedicated to the coupletist genre. Very nice of you to kitten me a while back

Low gumption. Not for any specific reason. Needed to step back for a minute. I know from experience when I exceed my willingness my pagework is not very impressive. No energy to edit so I stopped editing. Worked on my health and meditation. I still read a lot of pedia, even boards. Following your work. Saw some places where we might find disagreement. But as I ripen I value differing points of view more than I once did. BOLD and AGF are my guiding stars. As wikipedians, disagreement is where we live.

BusterD, we all need breaks every now and again, WP can be stressful at times and burnout is real. I took some time off from editing in May while I was visiting family, and it felt really refreshing. I've gotten back into article creation, mainly saving doomed drafts that are notable. If you ever find yourself with some time and don't know what to do, I have them sorted in subpages at my sandbox. The list is infinitely expanding for as long as SDZeroBot publishes the daily declination/weekly draftification reports. Right now though I'm working on an article from scratch: Draft:Betty Hall (politician), who was an absolutely fascinating person ([7][8]). It's obviously not in publishing state at the moment (I'm still in the word-vomit phase), but I'm on the cusp of finishing the hardest part and I can't wait to see the end product. Too much rough draft is a great place to start. I once complimented a fellow train rider on her seeming ability to just throw stuff down on the page without thinking. She appreciated the notice because she said facility and willingness was a challenge for her until she started doing daily pages (a part of The Artist's Way). I'm a firm believer in throwing spitballs at the wall to see what sticks. I get sentimental about some subjects myself, get drawn into caring so much it's harder for me to edit. Just because there is some limited coverage of this crackpot group doesn't mean it meets our notability guidelines for organizations or our general notabiltiy guidelines. Artistsbooksforever, In order to demonstrate notability, sources do need to be reliable and independent, but also need to to provide significant coverage of the subject. It may be beneficial to view our notability criteria for corporations and organizations. The format for literally every other cat in the Category:Alumni by university or college tree (and the Category:Faculty by university or college tree for that matter) is University of such-and-such alumni, so it's clear that that is the format of choice. I figured it was uncontroversial enough to bypass the bureaucracy of taking a 14 year old misnamed category to CfD since it is the format for literally every other cat, but I can rvt and CfD if you want. Hello Curbon7,

Backlog status

After the last newsletter (No.28, June 2022), the backlog declined another 1,000 to 13,000 in the last week of June. Then the July backlog drive began, during which 9,900 articles were reviewed and the backlog fell by 4,500 to just under 8,500 (these numbers illustrate how many new articles regularly flow into the queue). Thanks go to the coordinators Buidhe and Zippybonzo, as well as all the nearly 100 participants. Congratulations to Dr vulpes who led with 880 points. See this page for further details.

Unfortunately, most of the decline happened in the first half of the month, and the backlog has already risen to 9,600. Understandably, it seems many backlog drive participants are taking a break from reviewing and unfortunately, we are not even keeping up with the inflow let alone driving it lower. We need the other 600 reviewers to do more! Please try to do at least one a day.

Coordination

MB and Novem Linguae have taken on some of the coordination tasks. Please let them know if you are interested in helping out. MPGuy2824 will be handling recognition, and will be retroactively awarding the annual barnstars that have not been issued for a few years.

Open letter to the WMF

The Page Curation software needs urgent attention. There are dozens of bug fixes and enhancements that are stalled (listed at Suggested improvements). We have written a letter to be sent to the WMF and we encourage as many patrollers as possible to sign it here. We are also in negotiation with the Board of Trustees to press for assistance. Better software will make the active reviewers we have more productive.

I was able to find material on Frąckiewicz very simply. Trove material (AFAIK) is not indexed in Google or newspapers.com. For any Australian-related subjects, I personally find use of Trove a must. I've noticed that recently, you have postponed deletion on some drafts that were due to expire soon. There's nothing wrong with that and there are several other editors who used to do this regularly. I just wanted to let you know about the very helpful lists put together by SDZeroBot. In particular, you might be interested in reviewing User:SDZeroBot/G13 soon sorting which sorts upcoming G13 drafts according to subject area in case your interest is focused on a particular subject matter on the project. The most up-to-date list that we use to review G13s is User:SDZeroBot/G13 soon which alerts us to drafts that are expiring in a week. I hope this helps with you "rescuing" promising drafts! Liz, thanks! I do use User:SDZeroBot/G13 soon, in addition to User:SDZeroBot/Recent AfC declines and User:SDZeroBot/Draftify Watch, and then sort the ones that I think are workable into subpages. It's a constantly losing battle, as more pages are added to the list than I can make them (as I would rather produce 1 good quality article than 10 sub-stubs), but it's a great place to get ideas for articles! It IS kind of a losing battle. DGG used to "save" so many promising articles from G13 deletion but it was more drafts than he could work on himself. Few editors, there are a few but not many, go to help out improve drafts as most of the focus among experienced editors is on main space articles. I think the saddest thing I see reviewing G13 drafts all day is that there are new editors who come to Wikipedia and create a very promising draft, picking up some good editing skills along the way, and then they just never come back to finish their work! They come for an intense week of editing and learning about policy and they might not even still be here when the draft gets reviewed by AFC or maybe they don't even get around to submitting the draft and they are gone!

A few times a week, an inactive editor will show up at WP:REFUND and request their draft to be restored and that is great to see. REFUND is an antidote to all of the deletion work I do! Unfortunately, many of the REFUND requests are for main space articles that are legitimately deleted via CSD or AFD so it's refreshing to restore a G13 draft when an editor expects to return to working on it. Liz, Oh yeah that one is really awful, but there is still value in having the raw original content for the valuable little gold nuggets in the pile of dung. It is helpful to keep some details in memory; obviously most details in the draft, such as him being "the only uncircumcised boy in his class", are completely useless trivia for our purposes, but I find it immensely valuable that the original author wrote specific offices and specific dates he held those offices. Thus, instead of starting from scratch, this gives a baseline of content to start with; as the author had to have gotten this information from somewhere, it makes it easier to search for the specific sources needed, such as election results or honing in on new biographical data. Sure enough, by selecting specific keywords based on the OG draft, I was able to come across this biographical entry; if I can determine if this book is reliable, then I think I can stretch this to be start-class; if not for discovering that source, it would likely be a 2 sentence stub.

Additionally, though I create the articles in mainspace under my own name because I write them from scratch, I do like to redirect these original draft versions to my version of the article to show where the inspiration came from. Curbon7 (talk) 04:53, 22 September 2022 (UTC)

I'm glad to see you're making bold assertions and I'd like to discuss this MfD, if you don't mind. I'm all about bringing history into a modern context and agree that sometimes changes are needed. But IMHO the userbox thing demonstrates more about the nominators than about the nominated. Deleting entire user pages is outrageous practice for reasons having nothing to do with content. BusterD, Always glad to see you! My logic here was in relation to SmokeyJoe's rationale on the other MfDs for the userboxen, in which Joe argued that since those userboxen had no pageviews and no uses, MfDing was only drawing unneeded attention to them, and that it would have been preferred to just silently blank them. That is a completely valid argument, but I disagreed there, as I think inflammatory and hateful userboxen should be explicitly deleted, to make it clear that hate is not welcome here. However, with regards to the userpage, seeing as it was a user who had only made 7 edits during their tenure, and their last edit was 6 years ago, and the userbox in question is manually written in, I think it would have just been preferable to just remove it from the userpage and be done with it, instead of blowing it up more.

I concur with your statement that "Deleting entire userpages because we merely disagree with username choice, implied by userbox choice, is disturbingly close to censorship". I think that there is a distinction between deleting a userbox, which is relatively minor but can be used by other users, and deleting an entire singular userpage when there is an easier alternative. The latter can become quickly problematic and, as you said, censorious. This is very nuanced, but I hope that I explained my logic well enough Curbon7 (talk) 18:05, 3 October 2022 (UTC)

I have asked SmokeyJoe's thoughts as well. My concern is largely perceptual, but I take issues when wikipedians attempt to right great wrongs in user space. I've been keenly aware from my first edits that page history would eventually tell my tale so I don't put offensive stuff on my own page if I can avoid doing so. Florida 2024

What makes the Florida Senate Race too soon to have its own article but not all the other 2024 Senate races? The incumbent has declared and a serious challenger has legitimately expressed interest! Every other race with a declared incumbent has an article, even races without a declared incumbent have articles. But for some reason you have an issue with Florida having one! If there was an error in how I created the page then fix the error. I copied how the Texas page was done but fixed everything to read Florida, I'm sure there was mistakes in there! I put the same question in the talk page on the Florida 2024 Senate race page but never got a response Dickeyaustin786 (talk) 02:52, 17 October 2022 (UTC)

Generally with election articles this far out from the election, there has to be more coverage than just "incumbent declared" and "someone said maybepossibly 2 years ago". New Page Patrol newsletter October 2022

Hello Curbon7,

Much has happened since the last newsletter over two months ago. The open letter finished with 444 signatures. The letter was sent to several dozen people at the WMF, and we have heard that it is being discussed but there has been no official reply. A related article appears in the current issue of The Signpost. If you haven't seen it, you should, including the readers' comment section.

Awards: Barnstars were given for the past several years (thanks to MPGuy2824), and we are now all caught up. The 2021 cup went to John B123 for leading with 26,525 article reviews during 2021. To encourage moderate activity, a new "Iron" level barnstar is awarded annually for reviewing 360 articles ("one-a-day"), and 100 reviews earns the "Standard" NPP barnstar. About 90 reviewers received barnstars for each of the years 2018 to 2021 (including the new awards that were given retroactively). All awards issued for every year are listed on the Awards page. Check out the new Hall of Fame also.

Software news: Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have connected with WMF developers who can review and approve patches, so they have been able to fix some bugs, and make other improvements to the Page Curation software. You can see everything that has been fixed recently here. The reviewer report has also been improved.

NPP backlog May – October 15, 2022

Suggestions:

• There is much enthusiasm over the low backlog, but remember that the "quality and depth of patrolling are more important than speed".
• Reminder: an article should not be tagged for any kind of deletion for a minimum of 15 minutes after creation and it is often appropriate to wait an hour or more. (from the NPP tutorial)
• Reviewers should focus their effort where it can do the most good, reviewing articles. Other clean-up tasks that don't require advanced permissions can be left to other editors that routinely improve articles in these ways (creating Talk Pages, specifying projects and ratings, adding categories, etc.) Let's rely on others when it makes the most sense. On the other hand, if you enjoy doing these tasks while reviewing and it keeps you engaged with NPP (or are guiding a newcomer), then by all means continue.
• This user script puts a link to the feed in your top toolbar.

Backlog:

Saving the best for last: From a July low of 8,500, the backlog climbed back to 11,000 in August and then reversed in September dropping to below 6,000 and continued falling with the October backlog drive to under 1,000, a level not seen in over four years. Keep in mind that there are 2,000 new articles every week, so the number of reviews is far higher than the backlog reduction. To keep the backlog under a thousand, we have to keep reviewing at about half the recent rate!

Riverbend21, In my view, his notability is marginal at best. While his company is notable, that does not necessarily equate to him being notable; in turn, many of the news articles about LBRY are about LBRY not about Kauffman. As far as political antics, that seems to be mostly in relation to a series of tweets relating to the Libertarian Party of New Hampshire, and as such is covered at that article. I came to find the political userboxen to be largely irrelevant and a bit preachy as they became excessive; also, contrary to what some may say, being the subject of a Twitter post was not a positive experience. I am still very aware and careful with my biases, and if someone asks, I'll gladly say where I sit, but I largely don't see the need to put it on a billboard. X-Editor, To find ideas, I patrol SDZeroBot reports (namely, Draftify Watch, G13 soon, and Recent AfC declines), compile them into a subpages in my sandbox based on topic (such as User:Curbon7/sandbox/Politicians).

When writing, I like to compile all the sources first, then I throw all of the information onto the draft haphazardly (which is very helpful for when sources conflict), then pull all the prose together, and then add sources at the very end. You can see this process with the one I've been working on right now: Draft:Sedrak Saroyan. Sometimes this process can take only a few hours (Samson Mwita Marwa) and sometimes it is a month-long endeavor (Betty Hall).

I like to create articles as complete and holistic as possible, so I try to use every possible source I have available to me, as I dislike creating stubs. Sometimes, the sources I have available to me (Google, GBooks, newspapers.com) don't have a lot to say about a person and so there is no choice but a stub (example), even though I'm sure offline sources about this person exist. Yemsquare, When an article is rejected instead of declined, it cannot be resubmitted for review. The article has to be fundamentally rewritten in order to even come close to being encyclopedic. If you can manage this competently, and I'm telling you outright that I'm extremely doubtful at the prospects and it may be more worth your time to do something else, I will unreject and leave it up for another reviewer to review; but if I smell even an ounce of bs promotion, it's staying rejected. Oknevermind, It is a WP:BLP violation of the utmost level to assert that someone committed torture and war crimes without very reliable sources. I found this 2018 Miami Herald article which states that as a JAG officer, DeSantis aided in the legal defense of the detained. Now, I assume you are asserting basing on this podcast segment, where a supposed former detainee alleges that DeSantis was involved in torture at GITMO. Wikipedia operates based on reliable sources; that has to be one of the most unreliable sources I've ever seen, besides the fact that it is a primary source. Oknevermind, just for the record, I don't like DeSantis and I voted for Crist. Back to the topic, The guy being a "firsthand witness" shows that this is a primary source. A NYT investigation, a CNN report, etc, are secondary sources; we need those. Primary sources are impossible to verify and are subject to no editorial oversight or fact checking. Basically, we are just taking this guy at his word. Our Biographies of living persons policy is very strict about what is and is not allowed on Wikipedia with regards to living people (due to defamation laws, libel, etc), and it essentially boils down to the strength of the sourcing; if the sourcing is very weak at the moment, such as in this case, than the appropriate course of action would be to exclude the content for now. Due to legal reasons, everything in a BLP (biography of a living person) must be cited with reliable and independent sources; these should be cited at the end of a sentence or paragraph, as you have partially done. I won't walk you through the entire article as you are being paid, but I'll give you a general response. As a gauge-check, a little blue number is needed at the end of every claim. These must be sourced to reliable, independent, and secondary sources (i.e. from the guy himself generally isn't good enough). Everything must be cited in a BLP or else that portion may be removed until a source is provided. Our BLP policy is non-negotiable. Christopher Binetti, Wikipedia articles must be written primarily with secondary sources; primary sources are ok in little sprinkles, but an article should not be based entirely on a primary source. Additionally, the inline citation style is extremely unclear; I'd recommend reading Help:Referencing for beginners, as we use an encyclopedic referencing style rather than the legal referencing style you may be used to. As my friend Red-tailed hawk stated in a comment on the draft, there is a good chance this may be notable enough to at least warrant a section in the CUNY article; your goals at the moment should thus be to find secondary sources (these could be legal reviews/critiques of the case, news articles, etc.) and keep reliance on the case as a primary source to a minimum and clean-up the inline citation style to fit with our style. Additionally, the draft needs to be turned into an encyclopedic article instead of a raw case law review; remove or condense extraneous information, section into more succinct paragraphs, and keep focus tight as it can be easy to stray off-track with a broad topic like this.
