Removing citations

Hi Blackballnz, during your recent copy-edit of Bukit Brown Cemetery, you removed a citation to the Guradian here without explanation. I realise you're trying to help but if you remove a citation, you should at least explain why in the edit summary. In fact, when copy-editing, it's usually best to leave the citation in place and tag it with an inline template or a note on the talk page explaining why it's unsuitable for the article. Hello - it looks like that was removed in error, and I can certainly be more careful.

Can you tell me why you seem to have reversed all of my edits. I thought I was being helpful. This article was very repetitive, and I was trying to fix that (for example, the first paragraph reads: "...the land where the cemetery sits was originally owned by George Henry Brown, a British merchant. He owned the land and due to its hilly terrain, became known as Brown's Hill..."

St Mary's Blackburn wikipedia page

Hi Blackballnz

I can see that you have edited the St Mary's Blacburn Wikipedia page back to the content that you previously took the initiative to recently update; in fact removing almost exclusively all the references to the Marists on this page, except the single mention of abuse perpetrated by Kevin O'Neil ... I would be grateful if you could explain your rational for doing this, all of the removed references are factual and relevant to the St Mary's in Blackburn and its association to the Marists

Do you have any association to the school or the Marists, that would explain why you have decided to edit this page. I can see that you have included NZ in your user names; does this represent New Zealand by any chance? The Marists have a significant footprint in New Zealand but perhaps I may be reading too much into this interpretation. The timing of your edits would also are more indicative of a time zone on the other side of the globe from the UK, perhaps I'm again mistaken.

Hi @Harwood214 - I have no connections to the Marists, nor to the Catholic church, nor to this school - so no conflicts of interests at all - how about you? Also, where I live is irrelevant. I'm here for one reason only, to improve this encyclopedia. I found this page and saw that it was poorly written in parts, hence my changes which included updating the lead, finding new information and new references, and condensing information. The page as it now stands has two references to the Marist brothers, and includes the information about Rev. O'Neill. I certainly think this article can be further improved - mainly by adding information for the period 1925-1978. I see you've included a reference on the talk page - if you feel information should be added, you should go ahead and add it (in your own words, with the reference), but you shouldn't reinstate what was deleted as it didn't reflect Wikipedia policies for the reasons I outlined. I see that you've only made two contributions to Wikipedia, so I'm wondering if you're unfamiliar with the rules & guidelines? For example, if you revert a change you should explain why you did it, not just say "previous edits are not valid" and label it as a minor change.

Thank you for your response, describing you have no conflict of interest regarding St Mary's, Blackburn; you correctly revealed the reasons for my questions.

I attended the school during part of the period that Kevin O'Neil was headmaster, and have continuing contact with the alumni; much occurred in the walls of the school buildings that affected many of its pupils, the accounts of Graham Caveney highlighting the sexual abuse that occurred to him, there were others as Damian Murray has described.

Please read the reference you chose to remove to understand the circumstances that occurred at the college and the associated behavior of the Marists (Society of Mary). To provide an example of this, in 2015 at the centenary celebration of the college, the Marists chose to put Kevin O'Neil front and centre to celebrate him at this celebration, fully in the knowledge of his deplorable behaviors. If you also need further context for the UK please also read the Wikipedia pages of a collection Catholic schools in the North West of the UK and the prevalence of abuse within these, it is unfortunately commonplace, as is the denial or downplaying of its existence; it is an issue that occurred in the past but also unfortunately persists today; see Ampleforth College as one example. You may also wish to 'research' the behaviors of the Society of Mary in the recent Abuse inquiries in New Zealand to understand how this society has behaved further afield from Blackburn.

The finances that surround the final chapter of the college with the Marists are also relevant to its Wikipedia page as the school carried substantial debts at closure, and the Marists have yet 'taken' significant sums from the sale of the buildings.

I admit that the entries on the Wikipedia page are not ideally written and I commit to re-write this to ensure it is factual and referenced and to condense some of this information; I will however uphold that the abusive behaviors of the Marists at the school are an important part of this content and consequently are to be maintained; as I have described above for a collection Catholic schools in the North West of the UK abuse was commonplace, frequently denied or downplayed, the inclusion of these details on the Wikipedia pages for these schools being an important acknowledgement to the victims of this abuse.

I intend to update the St Mary's Blackburn Wikipedia page early in the New Year as I have indicated above and want to avoid any need for further revisions when doing this

Thanks for this, and I'm sorry for your experiences at college where all the students should have been able to feel and be safe. Yes, I'm very aware of sexual abuse of children by Catholic priests (and others) and also the prevalence of abuse globally. The issue here is not that anything is being covered up, it's that what goes into Wikipedia must adhere to its rules & guidelines. I'd be happy to work with you on this. Hi again Blackballnz -- I deprodded this -- the novel appears clearly notable. If you look in the edit history there were several reviews present (though mostly without proper citation details) before someone stripped them out. You should have access to the WP:Wikipedia Library, I think -- I find Proquest is the best for book reviews (you need to search it directly). Unfortunately both Library Journal and Publishers Weekly appear to have pulled out of the Proquest full-text access recently, but the major newspapers are still accessible. 2025 Update from Women in Green

Hello Blackballnz:

2024 has wrapped up, and what a full year it was for WikiProject Women in Green! Over the past year, we hosted two edit-a-thons, one themed around women's history and another on women around the world. We also managed to achieve most of our 2024 annual goals, nominating 75 articles for GA, reviewing 64 GA nominations, nominating 8 articles for FAC, peer reviewing 3 articles and reviewing 10 FAC nominations. Excellent work, and thank you to everyone involved!

For 2025 we have a new set of goals for nominations and reviews. In particular, we would like to see more articles on our Hot 100 list being improved and nominated for GA this year. If you take a look at the list and see an article you are interested in contributing to, feel free to add it and yourself to our Hot 100 project discussion. You might even find someone interested in collaborating with you!

This year, as with every year, we hope you will join us in helping improve our coverage of women and women's works on this encyclopedia. Every contribution helps. We'll see you around!
