WV WMAs

Best of luck in this new year! Just got a call from an analytical lab about a project I'm on, and it looks like this is going to be a GREAT year. Are you going to finish your degree work this year? Looks like I didn't get the WMA's finished by the end of the year like we talked about. But I made a good start. Less than a dozen red links still to go.

The Ohio Highways WikiProject

Hey Brian - Happy New Year! I hope 2009 is off to a great start for you. I saw you've been keeping an eye on some of the Ohio roads pages, such as OH 235 and OH 369. I'm currently participating in the USRDCUP, which is something that has gotten me motivated to do something I've been meaning to do for months, but haven't taken the opportunity to do so yet: Kickstart the Ohio Roads WikiProject, which has, needless to say, been floundering, for the most part. Many route pages were deleted because they were just stubs; other stubs are still in place, and other route pages can see some great improvements. I've been working hard on some pages, and as a part of that, I'm also working to improve the sources used for expanding route articles. (One commonly used site many have deemed as unreliable now, John Simpson's site, as that has not been updated in over 7 years now.) Anyhow, with this, I'd like to start working with those who have edited Ohio route pages previously, and currently, and seeing if they would be interested in helping to greatly improve the Ohio Roads WikiProject, with many of these things in mind. I'd like to see if you'd be interested in being a part of this drive. Let me know your thoughts, and we'll go from there. Thanks!

Also, I wanted to give you a heads up: Even though the Dayton roads meet didn't work out for you last year, we have another Ohio one coming up here in 2009. It's a few months off, but I at least wanted to let you know about it now, in case you'd be interested, depending on when it's scheduled and such. I'm going to be organizing a meet this spring (most likely in May sometime on a Saturday) in the Youngstown vicinity, highlighting OH 711, the recent I-80 work, perhaps ducking into Pennsylvania for a couple of things, and more. Brian - Greetings. How is everything going? Mark Saturday, May 9 on your calendar. That is the date we have penciled in for the upcoming Youngstown, Ohio Roads Meet/Tour. I'm looking into a couple of places in the Boardman area, with the help of someone I know from that area, for the gathering spot. The tour will highlight several area features...OH 711, improvements to I-80, and a little bit of the Keystone State for good measure, PA 60...among other things. I will post more details in the next couple of weeks, but I wanted to at least get you the date we're planning it for. Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions. Have a great weekend! Image/File

Saw your cleanup for the West Virginia NRHP list (always helps to have someone who knows what the abbreviations mean!)...I was just wondering — why change "File:" to "Image:", since both work? Nyttend (talk) 04:11, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

Just wanted to let you know — although sites such as Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park really are named otherwise than the NRHP calls them, we need to list them as the NRHP calls them, because this is an NRHP list. If we begin to display other names for them, it's less and less of an NRHP list. Nyttend (talk) 13:44, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

FYI i commented at Nyttend's Talk that: Please see this diff in which I just updated the WP:NRHP passaga to clarify what has been worked out as more specific guidelines. I haven't read up on the edits and/or followed the discussion between the two of you, but it seems there's a difference in understanding of where the NRHP name should be used. It has evolved that the NRHP name is used in lists of NRHPs and in NRHP infoboxes, although article names may differ. Wow, you are a real pro. Thanks for the clean up and templates. That was great improvements to all the articles. You certainly know what you're doing. Another input on this subject that you may or may not be able to help on or may or may not want to get involved with (since it is very controversial). I submitted these articles for a 16 article hook DYK, however the consensus seems to be with the multiple inputs from several Wikipedians at DKY that apparently it was not a good submission (for various reasons). One alternate suggestion instead would be to merge all the "sub-articles" into Appomattox Court House National Historical Park and improve that article potentially to FL or FA. Then again, maybe each article should stand on its own. Any input? If not, don't worry about it since it is a hot potato! --Doug Coldwell ^talk 19:57, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

I could see it going either way. I'd probably try to flush out the main article with more history about the park and keep the separate pages for the individual buildings. It seems like there is enough content there to justify them individually. Brian Powell (talk) 20:12, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

Great input! I think so also, that there is enough content for each article to stand on its own. I see each of these articles expanding by those more knowledgeable on each particular item (i.e. Clover Hill Tavern, Old Appomattox Court House). I agree that the main article, Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, should be expanded more with more history. I'll see what I can do. I am sure that there are others out there that know more on the subject that will expand it also as they find these articles. Burches Run

Brian: The reason I linked in Buffalo Creek was that the dam was removed as a direct result of the reviews instituted after the deaths on Buffalo Creek. Without Buffalo Creek, that lake would still be there threatening the folks that lived downstream of the dam. (As an aside, it seems like every safety rule on the books, like dam inspections, has to be written in blood.) WVhybrid (talk) 00:03, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

I still think Buffalo Creek is an appropriate link. Think of Burches Run as the Buffalo Creek that never happened, and can't happen now because of the steps taken to remove the lake. Geobox vs Infobox Mountain

Over at Wikipedia Talk:WikiProject Mountains, we're having a discussion of the utility of {{Geobox}} vs. {{Infobox Mountain}}. The general consensus is to use Infobox Mountain for mountains. We've always used Geobox|Range for ranges of mountains: there's been no explicit discussion about ridges, although it makes sense to use Geobox|Range for them, also.

But, for a single discrete peaks/summit, I think we should use {{Infobox Mountain}}: that seems to be the consensus at the WikiProject, and that's why I converted Hoye-Crest over. This would make it match the 6000+ other articles on mountain peaks in WP.

I would like to undo your Hoye-Crest reversion: if you'd like to discuss further, perhaps we can continue at Wikipedia Talk:WikiProject Mountains? Thanks! hike395 (talk) 13:54, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

For WikiProject WV articles, we've been standardizing on Geobox for basically everything. Hoye-Crest is outside of WV (barely), but there's a lot of WV articles that are already done done with Geobox. I'll talk over at WP: Mountains. Brian Powell (talk) 17:25, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

WMA list

Nice start on the WMA list revision. I've noticed almost every list FLC list has some sort of "comment" field. I'm wonder if a "comment" would be appropriate for WMAs. (Not that I can think of anything to say about most of these properties.) WVhybrid (talk) 21:48, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

Unfortunately, there are no outside published sources for the information as of yet. It's all communications between WVDNR and MSR&LHA staffers at this point. using your photo

Hello,

I have a question regarding your photo of the Beechurst Station, Morgantown PRT system (posted as a link below). Since I am writing my diploma, masters degree in spatial planning in sweden (BTH college university) about Podcar systems and how to integrate them in the landscape I would like to use this photo as an example of the system in Morgantown. Is this ok with you? Of course I will credit you (Brian M. Powell is the correct name, right?) as the photographer. I will not manipulate that photo in any way, just so you know.
