Problems
Renamed users on some wikis were not connected to their account on other wikis between 20 July and 21 July. This has been fixed. [2]
Changes this week
The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 2 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 3 August. It will be on all wikis from 4 August (calendar).

Thanks to the contributions of our many members and supporters, WP:YORKS has become a leading local British WikiProject in terms of the total number of articles supported (up from 12,769 last month to 12,795 on 30 July). In the area of GAs WP:YORKS at 127 is ahead of WP:GM who have 85. WP:GM has the lead in FAs at 62 out of a total number of 3,633 articles.
Currently we have forty Yorkshire featured articles:
As of 29 June 2016, we have assessed 100% of all articles with a project banner.
(Some new and additional article talk pages may still require a banner however)
Thanks
Comments, questions and suggestions about this, or any, issue of the newsletter are always welcome and can be made by pressing the feedback button below...
The number has been kept deliberately low to give us a fighting chance of improving them to at least GA status, also so we can concentrate our efforts on these first.
Celebrations
Celebrations are in order this month as we reach a milestone in the project with 100 editions of the newsletter. It was way back in May 2008 when we introduced the monthly newsletter to project members and I hope that it is still useful to keep members informed of things that are going on in the project. Sometimes you wonder if there is any activity going on and what is happening to the articles in the scope of the project but slowly things are progressing. In May 2008 we only had 3,343 articles to look after, but today that is 12,795. Membership was 45 but is now 82, even though we had a cull of members who were no longer active during that period. Of our identified 15 top-level importance articles, 1 has been promoted to FA-class, 3 have been promoted to GA-class, 1 to B-class, 1 to C-class, while 1 has been demoted to GA-class and another to C-class, note that C-class did not exist in May 2008. We now have 40 FA-class articles and 16 FL-class lists compared to 9 FA-class articles and 7 FL-class lists in May 2008.
Congratulations to all who have helped along the way and be inspired to move things forward over the coming months.
WikiProject Yorkshire Collaboration of the Month Project
The August 2016 articles selected below are an editor choice as there were no further suggestions from the project talk page.
The project is subscribed to a clean-up listing which lists articles tagged with various clean-up tags that need attention. The listing is refreshed by a bot on a regular basis.
Monitoring is essential Use the watchlist to keep an eye on changes to the project's articles so that vandalism and spamming can be removed as quickly as possible.
Moves Please be careful when performing articles moves and ensure that you also move all the talk sub-pages and update any image fair use rational. Otherwise the archives, to-do lists, assessment comments and GA reviews get lost and the image may be deleted as it has an incorrect FUR. You will also have to check that the Commons link is set correctly.

ABU map errors
AxG, there seem to be a poly error on the maps used for ABU Song Festivals, when placing the cursor over a country in order to click and be directed to the corresponding article: Template:Infobox song contest/ABU TV Song Festival 2016, for example has Australia's shortcut link over the Indian Ocean and not on the country itself. Afghanistan seems to have moved to Iran. And China, according to the map, have invaded India, Afghanistan and most of central Asia lol. Also some of the new countries do not have their poly codes included. I'm wondering if it is worthwhile to include the poly coords for all of the ABU members, even if they have not yet taken part? Will probably make life easier, especially as more countries are making their debut in either the TV, radio, or dancing festivals. Cheers in advance my friend! Thanks for uploading File:SAM Learning logo.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Problems
If you use the wikEd gadget, changes you made were not kept when you switched from the wikitext editor to the visual editor while you were editing. This has now been fixed. [4]
Changes this week
Wikimedia search will now ignore question marks at the end of the sentences or words you use when you search. Until now the question mark was just a wildcard. [5]
On Commons, UploadWizard will now be available on mobile, rather than just the old upload form. This should reduce the workload for the community in reviewing images. [6]
When you edit with the visual editor a puzzle symbol tells you there is an invisible template in the article. It will now mention the name of the template. [7]
The button to read something in another language will move for mobile users. This will happen on 9 August. [8]
When someone mentions you and links to your user page you get a notification. You will now get a notification when you mention yourself this way. [9]
The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 August. It will be on all wikis from 11 August (calendar).
You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on August 9 at 19:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Problems
Last week Tech News announced you will get a notification when you mention yourself the same way as if someone else had mentioned you. This caused some problems and will happen later instead. [11]
Creating and editing links to sections on other pages on the wiki now works again in the visual editor. [12]
For some users, cross-wiki notifications haven't been working properly. The count has been wrong when only cross-wiki notifications were present. The cross-wiki bundle has been showing only the names of wikis and not the actual notifications. This will be fixed soon. [13][14]
Changes this week
The login session when you choose "Keep me logged in" will now last a year. Previously it was 30 days. This will happen on August 16. [15]
Some abuse filters will have to be updated during the week. This is because a bug will be fixed. [16]
In compact language links, two new kinds of languages will be shown in the shorter language list: Languages that are used in the article's text, and languages where the article has a badge like "featured article" or "good article". [17][18]
The visual editor will be available by default for logged-out editors on Wikipedias that use the Arabic script. It is already default for logged-in editors. [19]
The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from August 16. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from August 17. It will be on all wikis from August 18 (calendar).

The norm and ccnorm functions have been updated to make it easier to write abuse filters. This also affects the TitleBlacklist extension. You don't have to transform "I" and "L" to "1", "O" to "0" and "S" to "5" anymore. [22]
The old pageview data in the "pagecounts-raw" and "pagecounts-all-sites" files is no longer being updated. You can find the new pageview data here. This happened on August 5. [23]

AxG, I've tried to use {{Infobox song contest national year}} in my sandbox so that I can start work on Bashkortostan in the Turkvision Song Contest 2013. However, when I add "Turkvision" to the contest parameter, it provides a link to "Turkvision Eurovision Song Contest 2013", which obviously doesn't exist because there is no such thing as the "Turkvision-Eurovision" contest. Is there any way the template can be modified in the way it was suppose to be, so that it can be used on any song contest article? Thank you ever so kindly. We'd like to invite you to participate in a user study closely related to SuggestBot. User:Another Article is seeking to understand more about the workflow and time commitment of contributors to the English Wikipedia. As part of this study you will occasionally be prompted to answer questions about your editing activity, and these questions should never take more than a minute or two to complete. The intended length of the study is two weeks, but your actual time commitment is totally up to you. If you would like to see more details you can read the project proposal at Research:Measuring editor time commitment and workflow (on meta), but if you are feeling bold and would like just like to sign up right now you can add the line importScript("User:Another_Article/workflowstudyclient.js"); to your common.js. The Template Parameters tool is now available on Tool Labs, for viewing template parameter usage. It works with TemplateData to show the validity of parameter names that are used in template transclusions. For a required parameter, it can display a list of pages where the template is missing the parameter. The tool also shows commonly used values for each parameter. The data is updated monthly.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited ITV Weather, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Good Morning Britain. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
Following a project community discussion, which was raised over the use of English translation columns on annual contest articles, and advice from the lead coordinator of The Guild of Copy Editors, who are extremely knowledgeable in regards to all editing practises and manual of style policies. A consensus decision has been reached to fully remove ALL English translations, as such content falls under the prohibition on original research, even if it seems helpful to the reader. This is because we have now to assume that every reader has access to automated translation tools that can always give them a sense of the meaning of the title in their native language; it is not Wikipedia's job to provide those tools for the reader. Which therefore means we are no longer to include an English translation column, nor are we to provide translation by any other means on contest articles.
Such information is currently in the process of being removed, and a new table formatting and layout style is being rolled out across all articles. Please view the new guidance on table layout at Wikipedia:WikiProject Eurovision/Format and Guides#Article layout. An example of the new table layout style can also be access via the collapsed section within this message. Thank you.

Language converter syntax will soon no longer work inside external links. Wikitext like http://-{zh-cn:foo.com; zh-hk:bar.com; zh-tw:baz.com}- must be replaced. You will have to write -{zh-cn: http://foo.com ; zh-hk: http://bar.com ; zh-tw:http://baz.com }- instead. This only affects languages with Language Converter enabled. Examples of such languages are Chinese and Serbian. [63]
