Thanks to the contributions of our many members and supporters, WP:YORKS has become a leading local British WikiProject in terms of the total number of articles supported (11,606 last month). In the area of GAs WP:YORKS at 112 is ahead of WP:GM who have 83. WP:GM has the lead in FAs at 57 out of a total number of 3,422 articles.
Currently we have thirty three Yorkshire featured articles:
The number has been kept deliberately low to give us a fighting chance of improving them to at least GA status, also so we can concentrate our efforts on these first.
Happy Christmas
It is that time of year again and time to wish all project members a Happy Christmas.

The observant will spot that the article figures are unchanged since the last newsletter as the BOT is not updating the tables at the moment and the manual update is not accessible. Hopefully it will be back in operation for the New Year edition of the newsletter.
WikiProject Yorkshire Collaboration of the Month Project
The December 2014 articles selected below are an editor choice as there were no further suggestions from the project talk page.
The project is subscribed to a clean-up listing which lists articles tagged with various clean-up tags that need attention. The listing is refreshed by a bot on a regular basis.
Monitoring is essential Use the watchlist to keep an eye on changes to the project's articles so that vandalism and spamming can be removed as quickly as possible.
Moves Please be careful when performing articles moves and ensure that you also move all the talk sub-pages and update any image fair use rational. Otherwise the archives, to-do lists, assessment comments and GA reviews get lost and the image may be deleted as it has an incorrect FUR. You will also have to check that the Commons link is set correctly.
Comments, questions and suggestions about this, or any, issue of the newsletter are always welcome and can be made by pressing the feedback button below...

Thanks for uploading File:TV Land 2012.svg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

There's been discussions of merging many infoboxes together to turn them into "universal" types that would be usable on any article, regardless of the contest. Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Eurovision#Templates should hopefully provide enough details. I had tried myself using my sandbox, but trying to use #if codes are just confusing the hell out of me. The designs will need to be able to cope with all of the contests - Eurovision, Junior Eurovision, ABU, and Turkvizyon - but with the option that the inofbox will change dependant on the type of contest it will be used on. Also there's the maps too, I'm not sure how we could get around those, but I'm sure there is a way of doing it. Any suggestion or ideas? Wes Mouse | T@lk19:13, 13 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You know mate, you really are the star within the project. I could not put into words just how much gratitude and respect I hold for you with all the technical wizardry you do for the project, such as the maps, templates, etc. I appreciate (and can fully understand) why you kept a back seat on the debate; it had gotten overheated. Hopefully it has all settled down now, as it is clear a merge may cause some technical glitches - whereas redesigning all-in-one versions from scratch allows us to address any issues, roll them out quickly, and then the old ones are free to be speedy deleted without any contentions (if that makes sense). Wes Mouse | T@lk23:26, 13 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
"Reprise act" - {{{reprise}}} have been added from {{Infobox ABU TV}}
The old {{{image}}} parameter will be gone, although {{{logo}}} has been around for a long time now, which automatically includes the [[File: prefix and size.
The coding for the previous and next contest links at the bottom of the infobox have been updated. This means my old friend the Cyrillic "у" can rest in piece :,(. The new coding now no longer shows a red link to the previous or next article if it does not exist, however it will also look back 2 years to see if there is an article, e.g. on the ABU Radio Song Festival 2014 article where it will show "◄2012 • 2015►" and not "◄2013 • 2015►" when they skipped a year.
Current thing to do:
Update the current map legends and have them hosted on the Infobox rather than on each article so they can be consistent.
So that's the update, if there is anything I've missed let me know. You can also play about with the updated infobox at User:AxG/Sandbox/13.
You also mentioned maps, and I don't know whether you were referring to this infobox or the planned maps to go on the country pages. -- [[axg//✉ ]]21:28, 15 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'm slightly confused now. Is sandbox 12 or 13 the potential new version? As for maps, I meant in the main infobox that would appear on annual contest pages. Currently we just add the year on Infobox Eurovision and it would automatically know it were for Europe, same for Infobox ABU which knew it were for the Asia-Pacific region. How would we get around this issue on a universal infobox? Would we need different parameters for example ESC Map Year and ABU Map Year? Overall though, the progress of a universal infobox is coming along nicely, and will mean we can get them rolled out quickly before the TfD deadline runs out and ultimately creates chaos. Wes Mouse | T@lk21:43, 15 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Whoops, answered my own question - it is sandbox 12. Looking at the coding, for the map year you use "Infobox Eurovision/Legend" - however the infobox Eurovision would be deleted, so would we need to review that and potentially have to file move the maps/legends accordingly? Wes Mouse | T@lk21:47, 15 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I can sympathise on how hard it is to explain all of the above. Even I have had trouble with explaining things; including at various debates over these infoboxes. So the new coding (hopefully) should work and would be safe to transfer to the new template along with (of course) creating the template documentation so that we can provide information on how the new template will work. The maps were my main worry because when I did a test using the Infobox Eurovision on a ABU article it wouldn't recognise the ABU map, and kept adding a Europe map instead. Wes Mouse | T@lk00:19, 16 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah like that. Do you think that is better than decorating with the heart logo? IMO it relieves the issue of telling the box to change from one icon to another depending on what contest article it is for. Wes Mouse | T@lk00:40, 16 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I do like the little heart icon too. But I think as we are dealing with a universal infobox, that it may cause coding problems telling the box to change from one icon to another - so bullet points seem to be the only workaround. If anyone does decide to ask where the heart has gone, I'm sure we could fob if off with "see WP:ICONDECORATION, can't have it any more." lol. Wes Mouse | T@lk00:53, 16 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ah right, sorry. I lost track of time last night, didn't get to sleep until 7 this morning. Thankfully I had no work on today, so could stay in bed. Had the shock of my life when I woke up at 13:00. Anyhow, I'm wondering once we've got this template sorted, would it's coding be similarly adapted for the other universal temps? If so, then I could get to work on those in the meantime. Wes Mouse | T@lk15:15, 16 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Oh dear, now I feel like I've had a senior moment. I just looked at that link and I'm now giggling to myself at my own stupidity. LOL. Thank you for fixing it. Wes Mouse | T@lk15:52, 17 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Software changes this week
The new version of MediaWiki has been on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since February 11. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from February 17. It will be on all Wikipedias from February 18 (calendar).
On Wednesday your Meta user page will be shown if you don't have a user page on a wiki. [1][2][3]
You can now change the order of categories in VisualEditor using drag-and-drop. [4]
In VisualEditor, you now need to make a change before you can "Apply Changes" to citations and templates. [5]
The way the cursor moves in VisualEditor is changing. Your browser now handles the cursor directly. Most of you will see no change. In right-to-left text, the cursor now moves in a 'visible' rather than 'logical' way. This is like other sites but you may be surprised at first. [6]
Meetings
The VisualEditor Team had their first public bug triage meeting on February 11. They will post the results on the meeting page. [7]
You can join the second weekly meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meetings you can tell developers which bugs are the most important. The meeting will be on February 18 at 16:00 (UTC). See how to join. [8]
You can join a meeting with the developers of the Content Translation tool. It will be on February 18 at 13:00 (UTC). [9]

The new version of MediaWiki has been on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since February 18. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from February 25. It will be on all Wikipedias from February 26 (calendar).
It is now easier to see template fields in VisualEditor. The fields are bigger. [14]
It is now easier to see when a button is disabled in VisualEditor. [15]
Sometimes when you copy-pasted a template in VisualEditor, it was replaced by HTML. This problem is now fixed. [16]
Tools in Labs will stop working for a few hours on February 24. [17]
Meetings
You can read the notes from the last meeting with the VisualEditor team.
You can join the next weekly meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meetings you can tell developers which bugs are the most important. The meeting will be on February 26 at 00:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
At the moment you need to log in to edit Wikimedia wikis on mobile devices. You can say if anyone should be allowed to edit on the mobile sites. The discussion ends on March 15.
Images in the interface will soon work better in Opera 12. [18]

Replaceable fair use File:Eurovision Song Contest.svg
Thanks for uploading File:Eurovision Song Contest.svg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:
Go to the file description page and add the text {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}}below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. King of♥♦♣ ♠ 18:00, 28 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
