Oh look - now there's a red link on my talk page. Ew. I guess I'll have to do something about that.
Thanks - it gave me the swift kick in the rear to start doing things here again. Turns out that the Western Interior Seaway article said that formed as the foredeep of the Rockies, so I fixed that too :). Ah well. Awickert (talk) 20:08, 12 February 2011 (UTC)
That's what's so much fun around here, one thing leads to another, and another and ... Aw, who needs to sleep when we need an article 'bout the Hatrurim Formation in Israel, editing weird minerals like ettringite and grossite lead me to that fascinating formation. Maybe I'll get to it, meanwhile 'nother red link for you :) Vsmith (talk) 22:29, 12 February 2011 (UTC)
That? You mean the Hatrurim ... collecting evidence. Lots of neat things I never heard of (or ignored if I did), paralava and pyrometamorphism, but I'll resist the temptation to make more red here. Vsmith (talk) 04:20, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
A GSA pub gives some details. Don't have full access but google books provides most of it -- skips a few pages in typical google style. If you find it ... can't see the 2nd page. Vsmith (talk) 15:45, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
Need some advice with this article. I'm frankly unsure where to go with it, or how to organize it. What do you think would be the best division of sections? I'm aiming to get a GA out of it. ResMar04:06, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
Remember, expert always comes as "expert" with me and volcanoes. (Hm, hoped those quotes would be bigger.) Anyway, I'll take a look at Shield Volcano and Mt. Cleveland within the next few days. Awickert (talk) 05:27, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
No, Cer, there aren't. The AVO has done an amazing job digitalizing most of what's been said about Cleveland. I actually e-mailed them, and they basically said "if it's not there, it probably doesn't exist". I'll wager that all of the sources on the page have nothing longer then a short blurb. You'll notice that only 1 of the sources mentions Cleveland directly (it's used in the article extensively). Also, they're rather hard to find. The AVO catalog is more complete anyway. Say, I don't suppose you can find Hantke G, 1951. Ubersicht uber die Vulkanische Tatigkeit 1941-1947. Bull Volc, 11: 161-208 or Hantke G, 1955. Ubersicht uber die Vulkanische Tatigkeit 1951-1953. Bull Volc, 16: 71-114, Awickert...? It's not cataloged anywhere I know of. If something comes up, do tell though. As for Shield, it's not nearly complete. I seeketh guidance on how to organize it and what to put in there. ResMar14:45, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
Okay, it looks good so far, but I noticed that it's heavily reliant on information about hotspot shields. There are more shield volcanoes at extensional (divergent) boundaries as far as I know, and I think the article should make mention of that, too. I'll try and write an etymology section for you. ceranthor15:09, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, this page covers the Washington/Oregon/California ones in a couple of paras. Working on it, I'm trying to finish up the location map first =). ResMar16:27, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
So, what should I be doing with the clarification tag on Geography and structure of Cleveland? I don't understand what you mean there... ResMar15:57, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
You say that the bottom is rugged (source says dissected), but you also say it is covered by a continuous apron of material. These seem inconsistent, so I don't understand what you mean by them. My best guess is that a once-continuous apron of material is now dissected, but I couldn't find info in sources to back up my guess (could have been looking in the wrong places though). Awickert (talk) 23:14, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
Ok, I made a few changes to the wording. Prolly just that I took too much creative writing liberty. Balancing accuracy and prose is always so difficult round these parts =). ResMar04:22, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
Sounds good - I'll take a look when I get a chance. Being factual yet engaging is a very difficult thing (some of my favorite campy movies come to mind...) Awickert (talk) 05:45, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
Hola! Gracias por informarme; he leido que Steve trabajó muchísimo en esto. Pero la verdad es que estaba tratando no pensar en Venezuela; demasiado desprimido. Awickert (talk) 17:08, 17 March 2011 (UTC)
Replied there - the usual, just moving, changing, and adding info in a way that I hope will make things better. But for redundancy here: (1) is my preference. Awickert (talk) 17:10, 25 April 2011 (UTC)
Hey! I doubt that you'll read this, as it's over a month later, but sorry for not replying; real life has left no time for Wikipedia in the past couple months, and I'm really just popping in for the time being. But thanks a ton for organizing, and hope it was great! Awickert (talk) 07:28, 18 July 2011 (UTC)
Cerro Azul is an active stratovolcano in the Maule Region of central Chile, immediately south of Descabezado Grande. Part of the South Volcanic Zone of the Andes, it rises 3,788 meters (12,428 ft) and is capped by a summit crater 500 meters (1,600 ft) wide that opens to the north. Cerro Azul is responsible for South America's largest recorded eruptions, in 1846 and 1932. In 1846, an effusive eruption formed the vent at the site of present-day Quizapu Crater on the northern flank of Cerro Azul and sent lava flowing down the sides of the volcano, creating a lava field of 8–9 square kilometers (3–3.5 square miles). In 1932, one of the largest explosive eruptions of the 20th century occurred at Quizapu Crater and sent 9.5 cubic kilometers (2.3 cu mi) of ash into the atmosphere. The volcano's most recent eruption was in 1967. The South Volcanic Zone has a long history of eruptions and poses a threat to the surrounding region. Any volcanic hazard—ranging from minor ashfalls to pyroclastic flows—could pose a significant risk to humans and wildlife. Despite its current inactivity, Cerro Azul could produce another major eruption. (more...)

mmm ... any coffee to go with them cookies? Glad to see you back here for a bit - presume you've been off having some fun in the sun for the last couple months, envy... :) Vsmith (talk) 02:32, 20 July 2011 (UTC)
Hey - good to hear from you! Some field work, yes, but mostly local stuff. The less glamorous truth is that I have been doing mostly computer / electronics / lab work for the past couple of months, and have been so busy that I haven't found time to spend over here. As the projects get completed and I get a jump on the papers, I'll get more and more time to spend over here; mid-PhD crunch, I guess. Hope all's been well with you and you're enjoying the summer and have managed to find some time to get outdoors! Awickert (talk) 05:18, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

Suggestion for WikiProject United States to support WikiProject Colorado
It was recently suggested that WikiProject Colorado, to which you are a member, may be inactive or semi-active and it might be beneficial to include it in the list of projects supported by WikiProject United States. After reviewing the project it appears that there haven't been much active discussion on the talk page in some time and the only content updates appear to be simple maintenance so being supported by a larger project might be beneficial. I have begun a discussion on the projects talk page to see how the members of the project feel about this suggestion. Another user has added the project to the WPUS template and I added it to the list of supported projects in the WPUS main project page but before I take any further action I wanted to contact each of the active members for their input. --Kumioko (talk) 23:14, 7 August 2011 (UTC)
Some updates
Hey. I have recreated a few pages in the past several months and I just thought you would be interested in seeing them. I just recreated Mount Meager's page today and recreated Heart Peaks' page in April along with several copyedits. I recreated another article this month that is not usually my topic for major editing - Big Dan Mine. Perhaps one of the volcano articles could be taken to FAC. Volcanoguy00:12, 16 August 2011 (UTC)
Hey, thanks for letting me know! I'll check them out as soon as I get the chance. Looks like you put in a lot of hard work (though I'm sure it was fun, too)! If I ever go hiking/climbing in BC, I'm sure it'll feel pretty familiar after reading everything you've written. Awickert (talk) 06:27, 17 August 2011 (UTC)
Cool - what did you use for the imagery? I Could probably help you get a scale bar and north arrow in there, if you want. Awickert (talk) 15:39, 19 August 2011 (UTC)
Oh cool - what setting is that? And is that the Landsat 7 pseudo-true-color? You can add a North arrow and scale bar in WorldWind, if you want, which is good for satellite imagery. Awickert (talk) 15:14, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
It's I-Cubed ESAT World Landsat7 Mosaic. Since I have found this setting it would be good to get realistic images for the massive Edziza and Level Mountain shields, although the Level Mountain shield is in the image I linked to above. Volcanoguy21:17, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for letting me know what it is! It's been a while since I played with WorldWind's Landsat imagery. I'll check it out. Awickert (talk) 05:58, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

Changed the title. Looking things up. Happy New Year!
Oh, and no need to both post here and send me an email - pick one and I will get it - save you some time!
Unless you are posting here simply to convince the community that I am, in fact, still alive and available (happily both remain true). Awickert (talk) 07:05, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
Sediment transport - add enough material that I can begin forking off the various formulas, then clean up into a nice manual (if I ever get a lot of time!)
Geology of Minnesota - talk to Kablammo this [someday]; I get the impression that he would like to go for FA (though he hasn't said this), and I'd love to do this as well
Currently clearing this out; don't expect to re-open for business in the near future. Alas, too much other stuff to do. Awickert (talk) 05:06, 6 June 2010 (UTC)
This is good to see. I think 'Hawaii hotspot' may not make it through FAC on this nomination without your able assistance: i'll continue to keep an eye on that, and will review it only once i've seen you've had a good go at it. Thanks for your contributions. hamiltonstone (talk) 04:43, 14 January 2010 (UTC)
Sorry - I missed your note among the mess. I have a bunch more to do, but don't have the energy (or motivation) at the moment to do it all by myself... so either it will be a slow go, ResMar will get more free time and pitch in and it will be a quicker go, or this FAC nom will be closed and I'll plug away at it slowly. Thanks for your continued interest; you'll probably be waiting for some time for me, so I'll ping you when I think that the article is ready, Awickert (talk) 22:55, 14 January 2010 (UTC)
If you work on the section I left on your talk page, any introductory geophysics textbook would do, for example, there are ones by Fowler, Davies, and Turcotte&Schubert. But if you think it would take you overly long to hunt that all down or don't have access to these books, I'm happy to just do it, especially as I have a 3-day weekend (yippee!) and you seem to be hosed.
For sources in general... many scientists these days are making their papers publicly available on their personal websites. Google scholar will often find if that is the case. Otherwise, you can skim the abstracts and use me as a delivery service; I check my email frequently and don't mind taking the time. And that offer is open for the duration of the time I edit Wikipedia and have access to those sources.
Anyway, if you can give me an estimation of your availability and whether you'd prefer me to tackle all the more terminology-heavy or technical sections, that would help me guide the trajectory of my work over there. Happy Friday! Awickert (talk) 22:07, 15 January 2010 (UTC)
Just did it. Thanks for helping ResMar - he seems pretty busy. I just wrote this there as well, but once we decide on a convention for the dating, it's a simple matter of transferring information, and I'm happy to help with that. Awickert (talk) 05:26, 22 January 2010 (UTC)
Yes, I'd love to. Unfortunately, I leave for the field very soon and I haven't even started packing. And I've promised my attention to two featured article candidates. So this will wait until I come back. Awickert (talk) 07:38, 15 February 2010 (UTC)
I will, though I'll probably be frozen stiff. Glad you added the northern perspective; for some reason, people here in the USA always think of the Southern Rockies. Awickert (talk) 09:04, 15 February 2010 (UTC)

Talk about stubborn, right? But it's necessary to beat it through the wall to get that Hawaii FT. Just wondering if you had a smidge of time to review it; it came close last time, and now I'll get it through =). Regards, ResMar01:55, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
Time is not my more abundant commodity right now, but I will do it if I get a spot of free time. In the meantime, congrats on the perseverance to bring it back! Awickert (talk) 00:13, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
I started a discussion there about changing Canadian Cascade Arc from a redirect to an article with my points mentioned there. Just looking for other opinions. Volcanoguy23:42, 28 January 2012 (UTC)
I've looked over the sources for it and they look rather troubling. There's a lot of discussions of eruptive events and the like, but not so much of its actual geology. Do you know any good sources I should look into? Perhaps that's why its current article is completely missing a Geology section. ResMar00:39, 30 January 2012 (UTC)
I don't have any good sources on the top of my head, but I will think about it and look. Going to finally start to poke around Hawaii Hotspot. Awickert (talk) 08:13, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

I will check out that journal article and do this. Poke me if I don't. I will be gone for a while this week, but you can poke me anyway. Basically, uplift can occur due to motions in the mantle; my concern with the paragraph is that hot things are less dense and therefore buoyant, causing a hot spot swell, but the paragraph seemed to separate those. I will have to check in the journal article to see if this is correct or not, and if it is, why this is. Awickert (talk) 08:59, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

Dispute Resolution – Survey Invite
Hello Awickert. I am currently conducting a study on the dispute resolution processes on the English Wikipedia, in the hope that the results will help improve these processes in the future. Whether you have used dispute resolution a little or a lot, now we need to know about your experience. The survey takes around five minutes, and the information you provide will not be shared with third parties other than to assist in analyzing the results of the survey. No personally identifiable information will be released.

Hello, I'm currently a undergraduate student and I have a project to contribute a Wikipedia page. I planned to contribute to the Wikipedia page on Climate Change. The problem is since so many of my colleagues have been updating Wikipedia articles, I have been banned from being able to edit the page. I saw that you most recently added to the Climate Change page and was wondering if you could help me. I was wondering if you would give me your opinion on whether or not my contribution would be helpful and possibly adding it for me or if you knew anyway I could edit the Climate Change page. I completely understand if you don't have time for this. Thank you so much! -(NicoleLeeHoffmann (talk) 02:13, 26 April 2012 (UTC))
Hey Nicole. My best guess as to why you can't edit the article is that it is "semi-protected", meaning that your account must be active for at least 4 days and have at least 10 edits in order to make edits. In the meantime, since we're close to the end of the semester, you might be able to make some changes and save them on your computer and then update the article once you are able to. Sorry about the inconvenience; sometimes articles here are semi-protected because they are frequent targets of vandalism, etc. Awickert (talk) 06:52, 26 April 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the link and good to hear from you; it's a long discussion, so I will comment when I get time. Bottom line, for here: I think that Raul's idea of generating a catalog of "good people to ask about X" would be really helpful. Even though I'm not so active here anymore, I would be very willing to volunteer time where my expertise could be put to use; I doubt I'm alone in this sentiment. Awickert (talk) 22:14, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
Barely back from a long hiatus and I get a barnstar? I'm flattered! Now I guess this means that I'll actually have to put some work into this to try and unify the policy... :) Thanks, Awickert (talk) 06:29, 8 May 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, just wanted to check if you had plans for expansion before I merged. Fine now. Hope you've been having fun doing real science :) Vsmith (talk) 22:49, 9 May 2012 (UTC)

Hello there. As you expressed interest in hearing updates to my research in the dispute resolution survey that was done a few months ago, I just wanted to let you know that I am hosting an IRC office hours session this coming Saturday, 28th July at 19:00 UTC (approximately 12 hours from now). This will be located in the #wikimedia-officeconnect IRC channel - if you have not participated in an IRC discussion before you can connect to IRC here.
I know I told you in February that I was collecting information to make an article about the Canadian Cascade Arc insted of it being a redirect to the Garibaldi Volcanic Belt article. Months ago I got carried away from this plan and didn't work on it too much until this month so here it is. Volcanoguy06:46, 23 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi, I know you're swamped, and we haven't chatted in a while, but once you find the time, could you do me a gigantic favor and see if you could find a copy of this source: Hering, Carl William (1981). Geology and Petrology of the Yamsay Mountain Complex, South-Central Oregon : A Study Oof Bimodal Volcanism. Ph.D. dissertation, University of Oregon. ? PLEASE? It would make my year if you could. Don't feel rushed whatsoever; it's a long-term project. Hope your Christmas, Hanukkah, (or whichever holiday you celebrate, Saturnalia included) went well. ceranthor18:40, 25 December 2012 (UTC)
Christmas for me, and best holiday wishes to you, too! I can not find an electronic copy of that dissertation anywhere. I will probably be at the U of O sometime in the next couple of months. There should be a hard copy there, though I am not sure what good my having access to the paper version would do you. The entry at the U of O libraries database is here. Otherwise, I wonder if a public library might be able to do an interlibrary loan on the item...? Good luck, and sorry I couldn't help more! Awickert (talk) 16:19, 26 December 2012 (UTC)
All the best to you as well, Mike! Someday I will hopefully have more time for this place again, but in the meanwhile, I'm glad that there are people like you putting good information up on Wikipedia. Cheers, Awickert (talk) 08:22, 1 January 2013 (UTC)
Reliable Sources
I see that you are a member of Wikiproject Venezuela and I had some questions about sources. I posted this on the Reliable Sources Noticeboard and I haven't gotten any responses. Would you be able to help? Justiciero1811 (talk) 23:54, 1 January 2013 (UTC)
I do not know the source in question, and do not have the time to look through it. For future reference, it is generally seen as impolite to ask multiple individuals the same copied and pasted question at the same time. Awickert (talk) 15:32, 2 January 2013 (UTC)
Sorry! I didn't mean to be rude :( I sent one to all the active members of Wikiproject Venezuela. Is there a better medium for asking for assistance? It's hard to find people who speak Spanish and/or know enough about Venezuela. Justiciero1811 (talk) 21:46, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
Wishing you and yours a joyous, healthful, and productive 2013!
Please accept a belated thank you for the well wishes upon my retirement as FAC delegate this year, and apologies for the false alarm of my first—and hopefully last—retirement; the well wishes extended me were most kind, but I decided to return, re-committed, when another blocked sock was revealed as one of the factors aggravating the FA pages this year.
Maintaining standards in featured content requires vigilance, dedication and knowledge of people like you, who are needed; reviews are always welcome at FAC, FAR and TFA requests. Somehow, somehow we never ever seem to do nothin' completely nice and easy, but here's hoping that 2013 will see a peaceful road ahead and a return to the quality and comaraderie that defines the FA process, with the help of many dedicated Wikipedians!

To all editors displaying the "Vital Articles" template on their User Page.
Hi,
I recently tried to make a change to the list of Level 3 Vital Articles by replacing the entry
" [[Comparison of the imperial and US customary measurement systems|Imperial and US customary measurement systems]]"
with a new replacement article
" [[Imperial and US customary measurement systems]]".
Although I have advertised the proposed change on Wikipedia talk:Vital articles, I had no response and an anonymous IP editor took it upon himself to undo my changes on grounds that my proposal did not have a "strong consensus".
Looking over the arguments, I have decided to support your replacement. I don't have time to look over the specifics, but it seems that Adavis444 has offered up some suggestions. Cheers, Awickert (talk) 20:44, 28 July 2013 (UTC)
Major crackpot lurking at Buoyancy

Don't know what User:JustBerry is on about here as I see no evidence of any removal. Perhaps just overeager cluelessness on their part. I say ignore and carry on. :) Vsmith (talk) 00:44, 5 October 2015 (UTC)
@JustBerry:, User:Vsmith is speaking of the page removal, which you indicate happened here but thankfully did not occur. I think the fundamental issue at hand is a desire to delete at will if WP:Verifiability is not addressed within the hour. This does not create an encyclopedia. Productive users do that. Let me tell you, I have created several stubs that sat, correct, but referenceless, for months. And you know, readers can see that these have no references! Sometimes I went back to them later, and sometimes other productive editors often added references later (as I have for others' unreferenced stubs). So it's a cycle of helping. But it sounds like you have enough of a heap on your user talk that you're getting the message :) Andy Wickert (talk) 03:53, 5 October 2015 (UTC)
Some time ago you uploaded the 2000 bedrock map, which is in the public domain. There is now a 2011 version accessed via this site and selecting the Geologic Map of Minnesota's Bedrock Geology PDF (which I'm sure you already know). Do you know if this 2011 map is in the public domain?
Harvey T., director of the MGS, said via email that they were free to use so long as the MGS was cited. I didn't get any clarification as to whether that would be the same as CC-BY, which I think it would be, but in his shoes, I'd be slow to reply in case there are legal reprecussions to an implicit license decision. Is his first reply good enough for WP, or should I send him another message?
Hi again. I uploaded it to Commons, under public domain (using the PD-MGS template), and requesting attribution. Thanks for your help. Kablammo (talk) 20:45, 21 July 2016 (UTC)

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Latin America/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Brazil, Mexico, Peru and Argentina etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Latin American content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon. If you would like to see this happening for Latin America, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Latin America, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant!♦ --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa.00:25, 27 October 2016 (UTC)
