Bush Stone-Curlew

Apologies for moving your clip. I didn't even notice it was a clip rather than a picture. Which I guess sort of highlights my reason for creating a gallery: all those pictures are just making the page messy and difficult to read. While they're all good images most of them aren't realy adding much of value.

You can mark it for deletion or delete the text and leave it blank. Other options if it is an incorrect name or a spelling error is to merely redirect the page to the correct page using the sole entry
  • #redirect [[correct page name]]

Antpeckers

You've added two images to Jameson's Antpecker, I was under the impression that the species found in Bwindi was Woodhouse's Antpecker (if my memory serves me, I haven't checked my birds of Eastern Africa for a while). Either way, nice catch! I managed to see them in Bwindi too, my guide assured me that they were very rare, and continued to claim this after we saw three more! There are definitely issues with Antpecker ID, the current Birdlife/Avibase website (using Clements 6th edition (updated 2007)) lists them as Jameson's (Parmoptila jamesoni), using (Howard & Moore 3rd edition (corrigenda 5)) as Red-fronted (P. rubrifrons) On www.birdforum.net/opus they state "Previously considered a race of P. woodhousei."
Are there any african experts on WP:Birds who might be able to help?

Birds of Fiji

Do you have a copy of Dick Watling's Birds of Fiji, Samoa and Tonga (the latest one, which has the silktail photo on the cover)? I was reading a copy last year in Tonga and realised that the island data for Fijian seabirds in Pratt's The Birds of Hawaii and the Tropical Pacific is way general and not a good basis for the List of birds of Fiji. I haven't been able to get hold of a copy, which is annoying, as I'd like to update the list so I can nominate it for a featured list. between all your images and the ones I already had the list is looking pretty sweet, so it would be grand to get it finished off. Slight problem, Dick has created a distribution bar similar to yours with the first 4 entries the same, Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Taveuni and Kadavu. Unfortunately I'm not versed with the other island groups that follow, which are Lomaiviti, Yasayasa, Vatulele, Rotuma, Mamanuca & Yasawa, Northern Lau and Southern Lau (in that order) Will check out my literature but you have Gau, Ovalau, Lau, Rotuma following the 'big' four so I will need guidance on these.   • Ya, that could be tricky. Lets see, Vatulele, Mamanuca & Yasawa go to Viti Levu. Gau and Ovalau are both in Lomaiviti, and I will merge all the data accordingly (which will take me a few hours). I have the 1967 Mercer book and some other book by Mayr if that is a help. I am trying to expand a few for DYK but it is really tricky getting info! Collared Lory should be an easy one to expand though. Birds of Queensland

The most obvious thing to do is de-cap the orders and on;y have them as a subheading once (so for example Procellariiformes followed by Diomedeidae, Procellariidae etc. Best to have the common name of the family present as well to help people, and if you are feeling like you want to push for featured status use the family information blurbs from one of the other 'birds of articles'. Images would be good too. Oh, and absolutely you can use the sandbox in that way. My own subpage User:Sabine's Sunbird/newzealandbird is my attempt to re jig the new zealand bird list. Correction

Hi Tom, no real protocol, if you find something amiss, you just go ahead and make the changes, leaving information so that future editors know why the change was made. So you can remove the images, add correct images (if available) and leave an edit summary saying "incorrect id" or so. Additionally you can click on the image and go to the description on the commons page (if the image on the English Wiki is just a mirror of the image on the Wikimedia Commons - commons.wikimedia.org - which serves images to all language wikis) and edit the identification notes there as well. That will prevent any editor from re-adding the images to what they think is the article where it belongs. Hope that helps. Let me know if you need any further tips. Aww heck, found the same situation trying to photograph a White-breasted Robin, the best effort of which I have left in the aforesaid article's taxobox. The wren image is an interesting one as it appears to be half-way through a moult. I am also working up Willie Wagtail, Red-backed Fairy-wren for FAC, and maybe enlarge Tawny-crowned Honeyeater at some point for DYK.   4. Musk Lorikeet. Excellent photo
  5. Horned Parrot. No image on wiki.
  6. Cockatiel. No wild ones on wiki
  7. Blue-eyed Cockatoo. No image on wiki.
  8. Blue Bonnet. No Image on wiki.
  9. Varied Lorikeet. No image on wiki.
  10. Brehm's Tiger Parrot. No image on wiki.
  11. Hooded Parrot. No image on wiki.
  12. Regent Parrot. The image on wiki is from the front and does not show the red in its wings.

Video enhancement software

This sort of software might improve the sharpness of your video clips. As far as I understand the software looks at a sequence of images and by summation works out sharper images. I think that NASA used this technology to re-examine films of their early rocket launches in more detail. There are a number of brands, so I did not link any. Curiously, the wiki does not seem have anything. You will get some possibilities by web-searching with - video enhancement software. You could ask at Wikipedia:Graphic Lab or Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/Images to improve and see what the image enthusiasts suggest or perhaps they might to the sharpening work for you. In both cases it would depend upon the citations you would be able to provide. Articles in birding mags, in newspapers, journals, anything other than the sites themselves that helps establish some notability and confers some verifiability to the article. Mailing list

Hi Tom, I saw that you are attempting a draft. To work on drafts in "user space" you can create articles like User:Aviceda/Sandbox and them move it over. As for the article in particular, I must warn you that most mailing list articles get AfD'ied unless you can prove it is notable using the guidelines of WP:NOTE, particularly Wikipedia:Notability_(web). That was not intended to disturb you, but I thought it is better to know ahead rather than to feel bad after. As far as species, concepts and other basic aspects go, I think there is consensus and clarity on whether Wikipedia can include them and I guess trying to push the boundaries of Wikipedia will be painfully democratic. What you basically need for academically oriented lists is to shows that academics use them. I will help if possible, but you must realise that the percentage of people who understand these are very few. I've been mainly trying to establish journals as notable, which is hard enough, though we seem to have succeeded for at least the ones covered by Journal Citation Reports. .The only one that have worked well are ones involving the sort of computer nerd stuff that many well established Wikipedia people know about, in which case it is possible to get a considerable number of respected editors saying, essentially, WP:IAR. I;'d love to establish more of them, but I want to start from the very best known. Or at least the best referenced. If you have anything you;d like me to check, let me know. New Pages on Butterflies

Morning Aviceda,

I think your edit history speaks for itself when I say you've been a great help at Wikipedia. I was wondering if there is any plan, or organisation to the expansion of your recently created stubs on butterflies, they seem less than stub quality...A single sentence on such beautiful animals seems a waste. I will see if I can find some information about them myself, but if you're already an expert, or have significant information, would you mind expanding them?

The two articles I'm mentioning are: Heteronympha banksii and Jalmenus evagorae

Wow, what a huge number of videos - the category must have at least doubled in size (and overtaken the mammals category)! It will soon be time to start thinking about splitting that category. You could probably get a bot to add the categories if you need to do something like that again; I'm guessing you could just list each file and a bot could add the categories automatically. Tip about images of living things

I notice you added Image:Red-necked Crake kuranda.jpg to the species' article recently. In this case the genus level article (Rallina) also didn't have an image. It's a good habit to check the 'next level up' and see if it needs one when you add an image to a previously image-less taxon. Parrot video on flickr. I wonder if you could upload this one to commons. I can only see the still frame at the moment. I have not seen the video yet, because I have not got the right sort of video player on this computer, and I am not sure what species of Amazon parrot there are yet. Whistler & Koel

The Golden Whistler is seriously messy group, and it is far more complex than an Australian and a Fiji species (indeed, even if splitting it is not entirely agreed upon how many Fiji species there are; one according to Howard and Moore, two according to Worldbirdnames). If I remember right, we're looking at a split into something like 6-7 different species (+ New Caledonia & Tongan Whistlers). I'll have to check the literature for details, but this is among the most complex taxonomic situations in Oceania and Wallacea. The koel taxonomy is more straight forward, but it is not a split into two species (it is a split into three; the Black-billed from Sulawesi and nearby being the third). Thank you for explaining. Unfortunately, because of the long distance of the bird from the camera, the size of the Double-Eyed Fig-Parrot was only very tiny on the full-size digital camera photo (the same size as the images actually appeared on the article). I took the photos at Brisbane Forest Park and added them to the article because, up until that time, there were no images of the bird on the article.

Hi Tom, It has always been tough for me to make any plans for birding because I mostly shuttle back and forth betweeen my home in Italy, and my family in the States when I do have time.

Galleries

I have moved some galleries of photographs where the photos added little to the article. When expanding articles I have used as many images as possible to add value but there are situations where there are simply hundreds more and I find it hard to see the value of a gallery that is longer than the article text and when all the photos are of the same few birds. And I believe I am dealing with this fairly - see what I have done to my own photos for instance http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramanella_variegata and the gallery of pictures that I do have on http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Ramanella_variegata - I believe that any contributor of photographers has to see it in the right perspective. I can however see no problem with large galleries in under-developed articles, it seems like a good thing to have the pictures as inducement for article improvement and also provide a menu of pictures to use. Aviceda, as soon as the left of the taxobox is completely full with content - galleries might be OK (see ongoing discussion) but the more text the better -, you can set "image_width" in the taxobox at 200px to 240px (depending on whether the image is upright or sideways). It helps get rid of a fair bit of whitespace, makes the article layout less rough. For upright images, galleries next to it can be 5 "perrow" width, for sideways I think only 4 (at most screen resolutions). Dysmorodrepanis (talk) 21:29, 1 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bird calls in video clip

WikiProject Amphibians and Reptiles assessment drive

At WikiProject Amphibians and Reptiles, in which you are listed as a member, we're working on a pretty massive backlog (1000+ articles!) of unassessed articles. We would appreciate it greatly if you would help assess the articles in the link. It's simple to do!

  1. Read over the article.
  2. On the discussion page, look for the {{AARTalk}} template. Add in a "class" and "importance" parameter if the template does not have them already. Example: {{AARTalk|class= |importance= }}
  3. For the class, fill in the article's quality using the WikiProject's quality scale: stub, start, C, B, GA, A, or FA. Most unassessed articles will probably be stubs or start class articles, and definitely B or lower.
  4. For the importance, fill in the article's importance to the WikiProject using the importance scale: low, mid, high, or top. Most unassessed articles will probably be low or mid importance.
  5. Then you're done!
