ArbCom 2018 election voter message

Hello, Astynax. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 2 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Pedro II

Am I crazy or those editors at Pedro II’s articles haven’t shown any specific passages that may be problematic? Their complaints are all vague. It feels more like they don’t like the idea of the emperor having a positive image among historians and in Brazil, which would be in itself their own bias against the emperor. And it’s the same people as always. More than ten years later, they are still around, popping out once and awhile to try to change the entire article. --Lecen (talk) 15:42, 21 July 2020 (UTC)

Yes, the same problem. They do not seem to understand that Wikipedia is supposed to reflect the sources, and not any particular editor(s) idea about what is "neutral" language. This was dealt with in the FA process when reviewers took the effort to actually consult with some historians. Certainly Pedro II had some flaws - especially for those who would have preferred him to have kept the monarchy alive, those who would have liked a more authoritarian personality in dealing with slavery, and other speculative anachronisms. Do we really need to make more "neutral" the consensus of art historians that Rembrandt was a great artist? Of course not, and that is not what "neutrality" means on Wikipedia. • Astynax talk 16:17, 21 July 2020 (UTC)

Pedro II

Astynax, there has been a concerted effort in the past months to remove articles related to present-day royals whose families aren’t reigning. The sudden debate regarding Pedro II’s article and the personal accusations against you and I seem to involve political bias. Unfortunately, instead of pointing out where exactly the article is problematic and where it is not according to reliable sources, they seem to prefer to make vague claims that cannot be resolved. I believe that what will happen is that they will simply gang up to force a majority (or a consensus, as Wikipedians prefer, which would mean to change the article into something that has relation to mainstream historiography. Since they clearly have no intention of discussing, as they ignored my repeated requests to show what exactly is wrong and according to which scholarship. GoodDay, for example, seems to have waited patiently for over 10 years (!!) to have his chance to change the article in the way he prefers, since he appears here and there. If they are raising an accusation of editorial bias, then one would think that they would suggest corrections to better reflect scholarly consensus. That does not give a license to change things to something that is more in keeping with one (or a few) editor's opinion of what makes neutral voice. That featured articles are subjected to a constant drip of meritless quibbling seems a significant weakness, among many, as there is no effective mechanism to resolve any particular issue. As to the pandemic, and although my area instituted restrictions early and hasn't been affected as much as have others, we have had a few incidents that fortunately have had good outcomes.
