WikiCup 2023 March newsletter

So ends the first round of the 2023 WikiCup. Everyone with a positive score moved on to Round 2, with 54 contestants qualifying. The top scorers in Round 1 were:

  • Unlimitedlead with 1205 points, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with two featured articles on historical figures and several featured article candidate reviews.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius was in second place with 789 points; a seasoned WikiCup competitor he specialises in buildings and locations in New York.
  • Germany FrB.TG was in third place with 625 points, garnered from a featured article on a filmmaker which qualified for an impressive number of bonus points.
  • United States TheJoebro64, another WikiCup newcomer, came next with 600 points gained from two featured articles on video games.
  • Byzantine Empire Iazyges was in fifth place with 532 points, from two featured articles on classical history.

The top sixteen contestants at the end of Round 1 had all scored over 300 points; these included Berkelland LunaEatsTuna, Thebiguglyalien, Sammi Brie, New England Trainsandotherthings, England Lee Vilenski, Indonesia Juxlos, Unexpectedlydian, Washington (state) SounderBruce, Wales Kosack, BennyOnTheLoose and Chicago PCN02WPS. It was a high-scoring start to the competition.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. The first round finished on February 26. Remember that any content promoted after that date but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Sturmvogel 66 and Cwmhiraeth. Spotless crake

Greetings, I strongly agree with your change to the prior image of the Spotless Crake in the speciesbox. I had already messaged JJ Harrison about his replacement & considered his photo to be a less revealing depiction of the species. I personally didn't wish to make the reversion, hoping that the original contributor might do so. Thanks again, Roger McCart Rogermccart (talk) 08:29, 22 April 2023 (UTC)

Congratulations, AryKun! The list you nominated, List of birds of Wallis and Futuna, has been promoted to featured status, recognizing it as one of the best lists on Wikipedia. The nomination discussion has been archived.
This is a rare accomplishment and you should be proud. If you would like, you may nominate it to appear on the Main page as Today's featured list. Keep up the great work! Cheers, Giants2008 (talk) via FACBot (talk) 00:25, 1 May 2023 (UTC)

WikiCup 2023 May newsletter

The second round of the 2023 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to have scored 60 points to advance into round 3. Our top five scorers in round 2 all included a featured article among their submissions and each scored over 500 points. They were:

Other notable performances were put in by Sammi Brie, Thebiguglyalien, MyCatIsAChonk, Chicago PCN02WPS, and London AirshipJungleman29.

So far contestants have achieved thirteen featured articles between them, one being a joint effort, and forty-nine good articles. The judges are pleased with the thorough reviews that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Bird lists

Did you consider a featured topic around Oceanian bird lists? I think you could pull it off, considering you already made three. QuicoleJR (talk) 16:45, 10 May 2023 (UTC)

Not really, Oceania has around 40 separate lists, with some really complex ones like Australia, NZ, and New Guinea. AryKun (talk) 17:40, 10 May 2023 (UTC)

black-and-yellow broadbill

hello, AryKun! i had a quick question regarding this article and the associated blurb. in the blurb, article lead, and article body, the word "wine" is linked to "wine (color)". however, the targeted article discusses the color of red wine, which is typically a dark red, while the text in the blurb in which "wine" is linked suggests that it may have been referring to rosé, a pink wine. should the link either be removed or replaced by a more appropriate one?

there is an article covering shades of pink, though i am not sure how useful that would be to a main page reader. the section specifically discussing champagne pink may be relevant, though i do not know if directly linking to it would be considered original research. also, although that shade appears to be the only one on the page whose name directly references a type of wine, i do not actually know if the bird's underparts can be accurately described as champagne pink. there is also another article covering shades of rose, though i cannot tell if that is more appropriate. dying (talk) 20:00, 20 May 2023 (UTC)

Wine-pink is basically a quicker way of saying slightly purplish red pink. It's what the sources used describe it as, too, so I think it's fine. AryKun (talk) 02:36, 21 May 2023 (UTC)
oh, apologies for not being more clear before. i'm not questioning the description "wine-pink"; i think it is sufficiently accurate. what i am wondering is the appropriateness of the link to "wine (color)". that linked article provides a few different variations of the dark red color wine, all of which, in my opinion, are far too dark to accurately describe the bird's underparts, and none of which i would consider to be a shade of pink. a google image search for "wine-pink" also returns images that feature shades of pink that, to me, largely appear far lighter than those enumerated in the "wine (color)" article.
do you believe one of the shades in the "wine (color)" article accurately reproduces the color of the bird's underparts? also, do the sources generally use the term "wine-pink", or generally avoid the term and use a description similar to "slightly purplish red pink" instead? i am admittedly unable to access the cited birds of the world source. dying (talk) 04:15, 21 May 2023 (UTC)
Wine in this context is basically purplish-red, which I think burgundy in the wine article represents well. AryKun (talk) 04:17, 21 May 2023 (UTC)
oh! that's interesting. a google image search for "burgundy bird" shows me birds with, in my opinion, much darker shades of red than that featured on the black-and-yellow broadbill. however, since this issue appears to be a difference in opinion regarding what colors accurately represent the bird, rather than a possible oversight regarding what article to link to (which i had previously believed this issue was and why i had brought it up), i will defer to your judgement. thanks for addressing this issue! dying (talk) 04:40, 21 May 2023 (UTC)
Well, yeah, burgundy is a much darker color than the broadbill has: however, the color it's described as is wine-pink, or purple-reddish pink. Wine is just a good, short descriptor for the first part. AryKun (talk) 04:43, 21 May 2023 (UTC)
oh, i see now. you are stating that "wine-pink" is a color intermediary between burgundy and pink. i had interpreted "wine-pink" as a shade of pink reminiscent of pink wine, like how sky blue is a shade of blue reminiscent of blue sky, how tea green is a shade of green reminiscent of green tea, or how the aforementioned champagne pink is a shade of pink reminiscent of pink champagne. (i had believed the hyphen was used because the color was used as a premodifier.) i had a suspicion that we may have been interpreting the term differently, which is why i had asked if sources specifically used the term "wine-pink" or a different description, attempting to understand what sources meant with the term.
i admittedly have no idea how commonly used the term "wine-pink" is in ornithology to refer to a color intermediary between burgundy and pink, but the first google image search i linked to above, for "wine-pink", overwhelmingly shows pictures of pink wines, suggesting that my interpretation may be more common amongst main page readers, so the current wording in the blurb might be considered misleading. in addition, the term "wine-pink" appears to be rarely used in wikipedia. a wikipedia search reveals few results, with only three using the term hyphenated. two of them you have added yourself, here and here. the third was also used as a premodifier, so i cannot tell which interpretation was meant, especially since i think the color of the flower discussed, as seen in this image, could conceivably be accurately described under either interpretation of "wine-pink".
my understanding is that, when a color is described as an intermediate between two other colors, the two colors used to describe the intermediate one tend to be rather general colors, as seen in the terms "blue-green" and "red-orange". using "wine", a very specific color (to the point that a link was provided), as one of the two, alongside "pink", a rather general color, threw me off. similarly, if i were ever to encounter the term "carrot-purple" used, i would probably interpret the term to refer to purple carrots before i would think about interpreting "carrot" as a color. this is why i had interpreted "wine-pink" to refer to pink wine, and was confused as to why you had decided to link to "wine (color)", as i believe pink wines are generally not that dark.
#b87781
pink (#ffc0cb)
wine (#722f37)
that being said, your statement makes a lot more sense when "wine-pink" is interpreted as a color intermediary between wine and pink. i compared an intermediary color with the picture featured in the blurb, and although i can see that this interpretation is reasonable, i admittedly would not have chosen to use this description myself. there is some variation in the colouration of the bird's underparts, and the intermediary color has some semblance to some of the darker parts. i had seen hints of yellow in some of the lighter parts (as one might expect from a bird with "yellow" in its name), and may have subconsciously corrected for lighting issues (not unlike what many did when interpreting the dress from 2015), so i had thought that it was reasonable to state that the color was within the range of that of pink wines.
in any case, as i said before, i'm not going to change the description from "wine-pink", especially if that's what sources say. i only wrote the above to explain why this could be a source of confusion. hopefully, it helped you gain some insight as well. dying (talk) 22:11, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
Changed it to vinous-pink on further thought. AryKun (talk) 09:07, 27 May 2023 (UTC)
oh, that's a good substitute! i don't think i could have ever come up with that myself. thanks, AryKun. dying (talk) 07:56, 9 June 2023 (UTC)

Thank you today for the article! - I have a composition on the same page, a bit late. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:23, 27 May 2023 (UTC)

Dude, come on. Calling someone a dirtbag is not defamatory, literally according to US case law. It’s an expression of opinion, and one I made because of the dumb nomination rationale. Does it show my bias regarding the subject of whether we should cover the numerous controversies every guru and baba seems to have? Yes, but that’s neither here nor there, and the closer can discount my vote at the AfD if they feel it’s entirely based on bias. AryKun (talk) 01:42, 25 August 2023 (UTC)

Hey. Do you want me to insert authors ("Authority") on the Bouvet Island birds? - Kweetal nl (talk) 16:43, 26 November 2023 (UTC)

I don't see why the "Birds of place" lists need the authority. Unlike the species lists, where the reader is presumable interested in taxonomy, the place lists don't really need the describing authorities. They'd just create visual clutter. AryKun (talk) 16:49, 26 November 2023 (UTC)

Appreciation

Because people don't thank each other enough: Thank you for managing the Tree of Life contest, and for putting together the monthly newsletter. Thank you for trying to pull these disparate editors into a closer community, where we can say "Oh, I know of so-and-so, even though we don't edit in the same area." For encouraging editors to work towards significant improvements on articles, and for giving us a place to showcase it. Thank you and happy editing, SilverTiger12 (talk) 20:10, 1 December 2023 (UTC)

New pages patrol invitation

Hello, AryKun.
  • The new pages patrol team is currently struggling to keep up with the influx of new articles and redirects needing review. We could use a few extra hands to help.
  • I believe that someone with your activity and experience is very likely to meet the guidelines for granting.
  • Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time, but it requires a strong understanding of Wikipedia’s CSD policy and notability guidelines.
  • Kindly read the tutorial before making your decision, and feel free to post on the project talk page with questions.
  • If patrolling new pages is something you'd be willing to help out with, please consider applying here.

Thank you for your consideration. We hope to see you around!

WikiCup 2023 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
  • Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
  • Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.

I will be standing down as a judge after the end of the contest. I think the Cup encourages productive editors to improve their contributions to Wikipedia and I hope that someone else will step up to take over the running of the Cup. Sturmvogel 66 (talk), and Cwmhiraeth (talk)

Bird citations and Reflib

Courtesy link: WT:BIRDS § Inquiry regarding possible use of a shareable library of citations for articles in this project

Hi, AryKun. Just wanted to follow up with you here regarding the discussion at WT:BIRDS about finding citations for possible inclusion as a new Reference library in {{Reflib}}. There's no particular urgency about this, so no pressure; I just wanted to let you know that I remain interested. I've watchlisted your sandbox and would love to collaborate with you to import some citations into Reflib if that makes sense. Reflib is essentially about compiling lists of "shareable citations", so an ideal set for Refllib would be a set of citations that are likely to be useful to more than one article. Finally, congrats on your two recent list articles elevated to Featured status; quite an accomplishment! Mathglot (talk) 05:31, 22 December 2023 (UTC)

Yeah sure, I'll keep trying to add refs to the list in my sandbox, but it might take a while since I'm currently crunched by finals. It'll probably take a month or two for me to really be able to get around to it. AryKun (talk) 08:26, 22 December 2023 (UTC)

Nyctibatrachus reviews

Hi AryKun! I saw you have two more GANs waiting for review: Nyctibatrachus sabarimalai and Nyctibatrachus mewasinghi. They've waited for a while so I was planning on picking them up, but since I also reviewed Nyctibatrachus robinmoorei which you submitted, I wanted to check if you're ok with this before I take them on? I imagine most of my comments will be similar to those on N. robinmoorei. so you won't be getting much varied input. If you're ok with that let me know and I can pick them up in the next day or two.

Thanks! grungaloo (talk) 05:36, 22 December 2023 (UTC)

Feel free to review those, much appreciated! The articles themselves aren't particularly varied, so I don't expect the comments on them to be too different either. AryKun (talk) 08:28, 22 December 2023 (UTC)

By the way...

When I said that some bald eagles have black plumage, I wasn't talking about the juveniles. In some photos of adult bald eagles, they appear to have black plumage (and a white head and tail)It was probably just the lightning in the picture that made it look black. EAGLITIZED (talk) 21:23, 28 December 2023 (UTC)

EAGLITIZED, I looked at some pictures and these seem to just be individuals with really dark brown feathers that sometimes look black when seen. It doesn't correspond to subspecies, just individual variation; the ssp only differ in size. AryKun (talk) 15:01, 29 December 2023 (UTC)

DYK for Crested cuckoo-dove

On 3 January 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Crested cuckoo-dove, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that misidentifications of the crested cuckoo-dove have led to claims that the extinct Choiseul pigeon is still around? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Crested cuckoo-dove. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Crested cuckoo-dove), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Thank you today for Nyctibatrachus major, introduced: "I am currently a bit short on FAC-ready bird articles, so we have this nice frog instead. It's not super well-studied, but there is a fair bit more literature it than most frogs, and I'm confident that this is the most comprehensive summary of that literature available." --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:24, 23 January 2024 (UTC)

New message from Jo-Jo Eumerus

Hello, AryKun. You have new messages at Talk:Misti/GA1.
Message added 09:32, 3 February 2024 (UTC). You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

Asking if there is any update. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 09:32, 3 February 2024 (UTC)

I'll try to get to it in a day or two, I've been really burnt out the past couple of days. Sorry for the delay. AryKun (talk) 14:24, 3 February 2024 (UTC)

IP Block

@TeenAngels1234: Regarding the GAN review, I've been caught in an IP block for the past few days. I've filed a UTRS ticket for an IP block exemption, but I don't know when that'll get processed, so might be a few days before I can respond and add the actual review. AryKun (talk) 07:08, 9 February 2024 (UTC)

Don't worry. Take your time. TeenAngels1234 (talk) 20:26, 10 February 2024 (UTC)

WikiCup 2024 February newsletter

The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.

Our current leader is newcomer Generalissima (submissions), who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges (Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), and Frostly (talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Comments on FA nomination of Knowledge

Hello AryKun, I wanted to let you know that I nominated the article Knowledge for featured article status, see Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Knowledge/archive1. There has been little to no response so far and I was wondering whether you might be interested in taking a look. If you have the time, I would appreciate your comments. WikiCup 2024 March newsletter

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
