User talk:AronayaHi, could anyone shed light on the detailed history of the Hotchkiss gun during the Indian Wars? I would like to know when, where, which battles against which tribes it was used in action between 1877 and 1890, as implied in the first paragraph under the Description heading. Alternatively, identify the source for that information, that it was used in the 1877 Nez Perce War, and that the US Army bought 56 of them until the Wounded Knee massacre of 1890? I've queried the US Army historical archives, and it looks like a large onsite research project to find the history I'm looking for. If any authors or contributors to this article have more detailed information and references they can share, I would be most grateful. Thank you very much. The article has almost doubled in size since my last edit. Wish I could help! -- Mwanner | Talk 21:47, 29 March 2014 (UTC)
Also, just curious -- do you remember what prompted your interest in this topic? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.253.17.165 (talk) 05:40, 30 March 2014 (UTC) Aronaya (talk) 22:21, 29 March 2014 (UTC)
Thank you, no worries -- I've since connected with a historian and made a little more progress. The only documented use of the gun I've found so far was at Bear's Paw Mountain, the final battle with the Nez Perce in 1877, and the Wounded Knee Massacre in 1890. There may be more, but it's been suggested to look in the Congressional Serial for War Dept. and Ordnance for that time span. Quite a project that'll be, quality time in a library carrel! 23:57, 13 May 2014 (UTC)Aronaya (talk) Help me! Can't figure out how to close my account here.
