Hi there. In the 1970s to the 1980s, when I was growing up in the United States, atheist was synonymous with Madalyn Murray O'Hair. She was on the Johnny Carson show. No other atheist was ever allowed on television. I won’t engage in an edit war, but I wanted to explain why I put her name there. Bearian (talk) 17:01, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Bearian, I do not say she was not a very important atheist. But her role (while clearly important in the US, I do not deny that) most of it seems indeed focussed on the (very influential) court cases in the US in that 70s and 80s. There are however several reasons not to list her name at the atheism main page in my view
(1) Given the English Wiki is de facto the global Wiki in my view we should give priority to topics of global and not US specific focus (e.g. was she at a global level more (lastingly) important than e.g. Richard Dawkins and Bertrand Russell?
(2) Currently the see also section does not list any person but directs to a list of persons. As those lists do include O'Hair, do we really (also) need to include her name in the main article. And if so, how do we (a) decide what names should be on (e.g. the above mentioned Dawkins and Russell but who else) and (b) how do we prevent that the see also section bloats to unmanageable proportion as many people may want their personal inspiration or youth memory on important atheists listed.
There is no doubt in my mind that your addition was in good faith aiming to improve the project. However, for the 2 reasons above I think it is better to keep the current also section without listing any person (including O'Hair, Dawkins, Russell). Arnoutf (talk) 17:12, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
