Historical article on KolkataHello.I am new to Wikipedia. I am writing to you as you reviewed this article and gave it a badge: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Calcutta_Turf_Club An article on a similar instituton is currently in need of improvement: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bengal_Club I tried to do so by looking at the article you reviewed and awarded. Like the article you reviewed, I tried to mention famous royal visitors, famous club presidents etc, and also quoted Geoffrey Moorehouse (who is mentioned in the article you reviewed and awarded). The difference is that I added more details, quotes and photos. The article received a negative review for being written like an "essay". I have tried to edit and improve the draft. I removed many quotes and just kept a few historically significant quotes. Here is the new version: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:The_Bengal_Club Can you please advise me on whether the new version is ok? Thank you. Anderson1970 (talk) 15:03, 20 October 2021 (UTC)
Thank you for your comment. Can you please tell me how to merge? An editor from the India Wikipedia community page kindly wrote back to me and gave me advice. He also shortened the opening paragraph. Following the advice, I have now shortened it drastically. However, the editor did not say anything about merging. Rather he said if I cut the article (which I have) it will be accepted as the topic is notable. Also, the current article is just a few lines and gives an old link. Also, the current article is giving a wrong fact that the club was known by another name. I researched and saw this is not true. A blogpost also says it is a common misconception. What should I do now? The curent status is this: - The current article is too short and has wrong info. - My sandbox draft is 100% backed by citations but was rejected first. It is now better with an editor's help and has been submitted for re-review.
Many thanks. I will copy-paste it then and perhaps leave a message on the talk page to explain what I have done. Thanks for the link. In my view, there is some confusion. The authoritative history says that the club was planned to be called the CALCUTTA United Services Club, but they stuck with Bengal Club in the end. https://archive.org/details/in.ernet.dli.2015.38290. The link you sent also says CALCUTTA United Services Club. However, there was a different club called BENGAL United Services Club, established in 1845, which is also mentioned in the book. The photo on the original Wiki page has a photo of the BENGAL United Services Club. Here is the blogpost I was referrign to. The blogpost criticises Wikipedia for givign wrong information: "On 15th March 1853, the Bengal Military Club changed its name to the Bengal United Service Club. This change in name has led several websites, including Wikipedia, to state that the Bengal Club started out as the United Service Club. This is absolutely incorrect." http://double-dolphin.blogspot.com/2016/04/united-service-club-chowringhee-calcutta-kolkata.html The Telegraph says: "The Bengal United Service Club was founded in 1845 as The Bengal Military Club." It has a photo of the bulding, which still exists. https://www.telegraphindia.com/west-bengal/maltese-cross-in-city-heart/cid/1258480 Perhaps I will leave a note on the talk page. Thank you, friend. I will let you know when I add the article. In the meantime, I left a message on the talk page arguing that the present article has many faults and should be removed entirely. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Bengal_Club Anderson1970 (talk) 04:22, 21 October 2021 (UTC)
@RegentsPark and @Saha Hello. As I am new and a bit confused, I modified the article's talk page instead and pasted the sandbox draft there. I listed the mistakes in the old article and suggested why there should be a new article, though I did retain a few things from the old article. Can you please take a look at the talk page? If you like it, then I can paste it and you can then delete the sandbox draft. Also, if you like the revised style I can post new historical articles on colonial topics like this . Let me know. Wiki article for Boxwallah=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxwallah Hello. I made lots of changes to the above article and practically rewrote most of it. Can you please see if it's ok? The main changes I made are: - Gave two definitions of boxwallah, discussed postcolonial definition extensively. - Removed sentences with "citation needed". Rewrote and gave proper citations like Collins Dictionary, Hobson Jobson, VS Naipaul etc. - Mentioned the Satyajit Ray film Seemabaddha. If this is ok then I can keep going and add a lot more information and academic citations. Thank you.
Sources for the corridor names of Kolkata Suburban RailwayHi, I mostly work on creating and improving routemaps and railway route articles for railways in Indian subcontinent (right now focusing on Eastern & North East India). I was going through the Kolkata Suburban Railway article and noticed that you have added some corridor names for the different branch lines like Southeast branch line for Panskura-Haldia line, West Elevated branch line for Seoraphuli-tarakeswar branch line, etc amongst others. Are there any sources for these names ? If yes can you please share. I couldn't find anything. If no can you let me know why was this done ? Is this a standard practice or was it for any other reason like formatting etc? Thanks, GoldenDragon2293Return (talk) 15:26, 18 November 2021 (UTC)

Boxwallahhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxwallah Hello. Further to my last message, I have researched on the article extensively and finish rewriting it. I have nothing else to add and will move on to other articles. Can you please check if the article is now acceptable and the box at the "citations needed" box can be removed? Thanks a lot. To sum up my changes: 1. I gave two definitions of the word. 2. I added photos. All are CC photos excepting a screenshot which I added from a movie (available for free legally on YouTube) and I think is fair use. 3. The article had wrong information about a book and misattributed it to Kipling. I deleted that and mentioned the error in the talk page. Unfortunately, some websites have copied the wrong info from Wikipedia. I saw the same thing with another page I am working on, which had mistaken (the Bengal Club). 4. The only parts of the old article i have retained are references to a Kipling short story and an Evelyn Waugh story. That his all. Everything else is new. You may also be interested to see another new article I created from scratch, also about colonial Calcutta. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liverpool_versus_Calcutta,_1880 Thanks a lot. Ok at least fix sponsor name pls — Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.140.228.133 (talk) 20:22, 21 November 2021 (UTC) Calcutta Swimming ClubHello again. I wanted to let you know that I rewrote this article pretty much entirely, retaining just a few lines from the original which had sources: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Calcutta_Swimming_Club The old article was very short, had no photos, had some mistakes, had a lack of sources, had some dead links, and had very little historical information. I tried to rectify all of this and give authoritative citations (expect for a few facts, for which I relied on the club website (as the previous author had done). Is this ok? I would be grateful if you could please take a look. Also, I have a small doubt. I am receiving messages about 2 movie screenshots I uploaded but I cannot understand how to provide the information that it is (arguably) covered by fair use. I added a tag but I don't think I did it properly. Thank you. Anderson1970 (talk) 17:50, 21 November 2021 (UTC)

Boxwallah article image issueHello I received the message below regarding the Boxwallah article I rewrote. Can you please help me? Thank you. This is the image I uploaded on the ground of fair use. If it's not fair use then I can simply upload a photo of Satyajit Ray instead. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Hindusthan_Peters.png

I have now finished rewriting the Bengal Club article. I followed your advice and uploaded it part by part, while cross-checking all citations. Could you please check and see if it is ok? A few editors had made edits while I was uploading the sections, but these were just minor edits like typo corrections and citation formats. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bengal_Club The article is longer than the Calcutta Swimming Club article, as I found a lot more material. I tried to borrow ideas from these articles: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waldorf_Astoria_New_York https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Liberal_Club I explained earlier in the talk page the errors I would be correcting and the citations I would be retaining. Thank you again for your help! Anderson1970 (talk) 04:36, 25 November 2021 (UTC)
Thank you very much! I also added a Barnstar to your main page meant to thank editors who help novice users, though I think I may have formatted it wrongly! Anderson1970 (talk) 05:51, 26 November 2021 (UTC)
