Edmund Backhouse (MP)

You added " |listas=Backhouse, Edmund " to the talk page of Edmund Backhouse (MP). Will this distinguish him from his rather more famous/notorious grandson: Sir Edmund Backhouse, 2nd Baronet  ? ==Vernon White (talk) 21:51, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

WPBIO "listas" names

Hello. Thank you for your efforts in filling out the project banners for WikiProject Biographies. Please be careful, however, with East Asian names and with others that may be written in the reverse order from what you are used to. It can be tough to recognize if you're not familiar with Japanese names enough to know that Tanaka is a surname, and Mototsugu is a given name, etc. And I don't blame you for that, certainly. you recently rated

Alexander Milne Calder as a Stub Class article but did not leave any comments as to how you think this article (which, I must admit, is mostly mine) can escape this designation. I have written a fair number of such articles over the last several years and these assessments have started popping up like the dandelions in my garden and I'm at a loss as to what to do? No, not about the dandelions. I dig them up and feel good about it, but about these articles that I've spent much time and energy putting together so other folks can point out that they are not good enough. Yet these other folks never, or rarely anyway, seem to do anything other than leave brightly colored but slightly irritating messages on them. If the time was used to improve the articles rather than leaving that for someone else . . .... well the dandelions would probably all cease to exist too. The effect that this is having on me is that I now remove things (my things, pictures mostly) from these articles when this happens. Carptrash 00:11, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

Talkpage BannerShells

Please stop adding |2=,|3= to each project in a Bannershell template. Each Project is listed after the |1= listing. When you add the additional numbers the 2nd,3rd, etc. project is no longer displayed in the bannershell. Take a look at your edit and the banner shell from your edit then what I changed it back to. I don't know why that template is set up like that since multiple numbers would make sense, but it isn't. Optigan13 04:13, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

Benjamin Waterhouse article

Hello there, and thanks for taking the time to assess the page I created for the WikiBiography portal. I added the stub notice by default as I do for all my articles, but do you think there might be information in the article itself to warrant start class? I've taken another look and did indeed upgrade it to a start (it might even be pushing B-class, but I don't really know much about the history of medicine). I've been working on alphabetizing the biography articles and assigning them to workgroups; by default, I also give "Stub" ratings to any articles I come across with stub tags -- we're in the middle of an assessment drive after all. Listas

Good job on adding the |listas= parameter to articles! That explains why lots of people with surnames starting with C were turning up in the letter category I was assessing. I want to note though, you spell parameter "perameter" in your edit summary. And you spelled Wikiquote wrong on your user page :). Anyways, thanks for doing some listas work, it's nice not to have to fill in that darned thing when I'm trying to assess articles. Psychless 22:12, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

Sure, take your time. The only problem with requesting adminship is that the process can easily turn into a demoralizing bloodbath. Like I said, if you're interested I'll take a closer look at your contribs and I should be able to give you a pretty good idea of whether or not you'd make it. Just a quick update: I actually just took a cursory glance at your history on Wikipedia and I'm afraid that your limited participation in the Wikipedia namespace will be a problem for a number of RfA participants. I'm not sure I'd find that to be a reasonable objection but the fact is that it will come up. So maybe you should wait until you have more thorough involvment in processes such as articles for deletion. (of course, that's if you want to be an admin, which is not necessarily the case!) listas parameter

You're not to first to ask. (I think I was asked this here a few sections ago, but never mind.) It's a parameter in the Biography Wikiproject's banner that enables the categories to be correctly sorted. Since the project deals almost exclusively with individual people — they do cover a few groups, such as the musical kind — they came up with this so that the articles would sort by people's family names and not their given names. The default would usually be the reverse, since in most (all?) Western countries the given name comes first.  — AnnaKucsma   (Talk to me!) 22:08, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

THanks for helping by filling the listas parameter. However, please be careful with Asian names. As I have been assessing articles, I have noticed many Asians (especially Koreans, Vietnamese, and Chinese) have been missorted. In these languages, as well as Burman, the family names come first. With the Japanese, it is more confusing as in their language, the surnames come first, but most articles are written in the Western order.
