Paul Anka revisited

Hi! I just noticed that Paul Anka is categorised as a "Canadian of Syrian descent" (and not as a "Canadian of Lebanese descent"). I know you and I discussed this a few weeks ago and you added a very helpful note to the text. Hi, Anas -- I noticed this discussion thread earlier and seeing this note reminded me of some thoughts I had had in between. It seems that if one were looking historically, anyone with Lebanese heritage would by definition have to have Syrian heritage as they were historically the same country (Syria) under the Ottoman Empire (until about WWI and shortly thereafter). The tricky part comes because, of the 5 countries that were formed out of the Syrian territory, only in Lebanon was there "a clear and almost immediate sense of 'special nationality'," in part because of the presence of the Maronites (claiming to be descended from ancient Phoenicians and not Arabs) and the Christians there. So perhaps, especially if Anka's descent was through an Arab line, one might easily say that he was of "Lebanese (and thus historically Syrian) lineage"? If he comes from a non-Arab line, the politics of identification as Lebanese rather than Syrian might suggest not making the extension to Syria. Hi Makalp, Merhaba and welcome to our ranks! I'd like to keep the template in my user page as it is to be used in our small WikiProject and not really worth moving to the template space. But, if you insist, I will move it myself after some other additions and modifications. As for the districts-related and the like templates, it is quite early for our WikiProject. Maps

Maps, Your labelled map is perfect. I made tests only. If we use this labelled map in governorate infobox; there will be only one map, in each governorate name will be Highlighted etc. What do you think? see governorates with this map.Must.T C 10:29, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

Weird Arabic script problem

Hello Anas, I was wondering if you could help me out on a page, Ridvan. The page has some Arabic script that appears right-to-left on Firefox, but left-to-right in IE. I've tried fixing the problem by switching into IE, and rewriting the script there, but then that messes up the Firefox version. Have you seen this before? Can you help out? In order to keep these files, you should release them under a free license. The best free license to choose, in my opinion, is the Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike License v. 2.5. To use this license, just tag your article with {{Cc-by-sa-2.5|Attribution}} and replace Attribution with the website/person you wish to be attributed to when reused elsewhere. This license allows others to use the image for free anywhere as long as they attribute it to you or your website. I would also suggest that you indicate in every image's summary that Latifa herself owns the copyrights and has personally allowed you to use them under the free license in Wikipedia. If there are any album pictures, you can release them under fair use licenses, because I think that she doesn't own the copyrights, but the label companies like Rotana do; such images should be released under a fair use license, in this case a {{Non-free album cover}} tag should suffice in addition to your source, of course. Syria district maps

Hi there Rarelibra. Well, I was talking with a friend of mine on maps, and he told me about you. Browsing through your map work and user page, I think you're the guy we're looking for. We, in the fairly new WikiProject Syria, are looking for maps of the 60 districts of the 13 governorates of Syria. They're actually 14 governorates, but Damascus already has a map. I don't know if you are busy or have higher priorities in this time, but I would really appreciate if you can do us this favor. I don't know if you're going to be able to find the needed map resources, because I couldn't. If you can, I would like it if the maps used uniform colors. You have chosen one of the most difficult countries on the planet to get mapping information or any references. I combed all kinds of resources, and come up missing every time. Do you know of any resources at all that we could get any kind of map to use as a guide for the various districts? Maybe I'm not going to need any names. I might use markers and labels for every district in an infobox, much like how the folks did it in Template:Infobox Indian Jurisdiction. However, I think that there is an error in the map; the district labeled "Aleppo city" includes the one labeled "Samaan", i.e. both are one district. I am still trying to look for the remaining maps! This is exactly why I love Wikipedia. :-) Concerning the other maps, I've spent some 6 hours searching yesterday; it's hopeless. I contacted a bunch of Syrian websites requesting some help. I don't trust I'll receive any help but would sure love to. It's really sad how weak Syrian-related coverage is online. Districts of Syria

..We got 'em! I almost gave up hope, so I was searching online today, trying all kinds of search strategies, and of course, found nothing. I accidentally clicked on the CBS-SYR (Central Bureau of Statistics) in my bookmarks folder, and what I immediately noticed was the new design and the major overhaul in the website. I had visited it yesterday night and there was nothing. I immediately started looking for any helpful new additions, and there they were: every districts map we need! They're heaven-sent. Here they are:

Assistance?

I was just thinking ... since you speak/understand Arabic, would it be possible for you to assist me in finding administrative maps for other Arabic-speaking nations? I just looked at the layers I have - and other Arabic-speaking possible maps for help would be from Bahrain, Iraq (hah!), Kuwait, Libya, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and United Arab Emirates. All of these I have the 1st-level administrative data, but have no possible reference for 2nd-level administrative data (and no knowledge of Arabic to peruse those respective websites). Middle East maps

Hi Rarelibra. I searched for maps for the subdivisions of Egypt. In Egypt, a governorate has several regions (markaz) and each has several cities and districts. There are 166 regions in the 27 governorates of Egypt. The capital governorate, Al-Qahira (Cairo), has no regions. I've found four ready and perfect maps in Commons:

Here is a list of the maps of all the remaining governorates, except Cairo of course:

However, in those maps, the regions, their capital cities, and some districts are all together shown, so it is quite chaotic. Maybe you can contact User:Mohammed Khalil, the creator of the maps from Commons, to ask him where he might have got the maps. As for the labels, that will be a little too difficult and strenuous for me. To get the names, I would have to go through the pain of finding the standard English transliteration of the name, and believe you me, that is not easy. This might be helpful.

Iraq's district maps can be found in the Districts of Iraq article. Bahrain's municipalities are here. In Libya, the second-level administrative divisions are cities, not regions or districts; this is the case in Qatar too, where every municipality has one city. In the United Arab Emirates, every emirate has a capital city and many towns; some have exclaves. Tunisia, Yemen, and Saudi Arabia remain. I can't promise you anything. A totally separate WTF. I have been concentrating my energies elsewhere for the time being, and encountered a problem on talk:Treaty of Ghent. For some reason, the last editor's post there appears unsigned, even though the "~~~~" is there. There's a two-word bit of minor vandalism at the bottom that doesn't appear on the page at all, and any new additions fail to save. The main article page appears OK, and I could edit there - it's just some hiccup on the discussion page. I was hoping my welcoming-guardian-angel-main source of advice (that should be a barn-leaf... for Canadians...) could help. What is up with that? Esseh 02:13, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

Sources for Syrian Canadian article

Hey, would you happen to have any good sources for this article? I haven't found many, here are the ones I have so far: [1], [2], and [3] (beware of this last one, its pages keep reloading in firefox, but it works fine in explorer.)
