Greetings!Hi Anas, Thanks for the warm welcome! It's always nice to be back. I see you've done great work especially on the Syria Portal, keep it up! As for the city/town issue. You know that in Arabic we only have the word (مدينة) for both, and that creates confusion when translating to English. And that makes any classification we try unofficial. personally, I prefer to call the governorate capitals "cities", and the rest "towns". However, since the government does not differentiate between them when chartering a new city/town, and the Bureau of Statistics translates (مدينة) as "city", and since you're keeping it consistent across articles, I'll agree with you to keep them all as cities, but I suggest to use the term "X is a small city" where appropriate. What do you think? Best Regards, Orionist 11:53, 23 July 2007 (UTC) Vandalism report on iTalkBBThanks for looking into my report of repeated blanking by 216.141.201.178. If you take a look at the talk page for iTalkBB, you'll see that the person or persons responsible for the blanking tend to rotate through a set of IPs and sockpuppet accounts. I believe these are intended to circumvent the blocking policy, as the frequency of blankings on iTalkBB averages about one ever week or so. Could you please let me know how to do either of the following? 1. trace and document probable sockpuppets 2. make the case that the rotation is a special violation of the Wikipedia vandalism policy Thanks! Badagnani (talk) 04:30, 4 January 2008 (UTC) Ha, it took me over an hour to find that! I'm glad to have the software I got from some Hungarian guy's website that allows me to type Arabic using the arrangement of the Latin keyboard. I love it. But in this case I found it by doing a Google search for the name Nassim Maalouf (in Arabic script) and adding المتن (the name of the district the village is in), then looking for something that began with كفر. Regarding the Lebanese's lack of pronouncing the "qoph," I had heard that many Lebanese aren't easily able to pronounce this letter correctly, and I guess it's true. Probably it's because in the current Arabic world there used to be many, many languages (both Semitic and non-Semitic), whereas now Arabic is exclusively spoken in most countries. Like in the dialects of Italy, for example, phonetic sounds from Etruscan Greek and Celtic languages may persist in the vocabulary and pronunciation. Typing Arabic on MS Word (Windows XP)Hi, can you help me with a question? The computer person at my university has just helped me install right-to-left typing on the Windows XP computer of Halim El-Dabh. I already have the Arabic ASDF Western keyboard, which works great on the Internet to type Arabic, but in Microsoft Word the Arabic letters didn't connect, even though I had clicked "right-to-left" in MS Word. So today he brought the Windows XP CD-R that allowed for the installation of complex scripts and right-to-left typing in Windows and MS Word. Now, the problem is that when I set right-to-left and the Arabic ASDF Western keyboard on MS Word, I type an Arabic word, then hit the space bar, it puts the space to the RIGHT of the word instead of the left, then the next word I type goes to the RIGHT of the last word I'd typed. The Arabic letters are connecting and typing from right to left, it's just when hitting the space bar and typing the next word that the words are not following one another in the right order. About an hour ago, I had it working correctly, but now it's reverted back to the incorrect way. The only way to put the words into the right order is to move the cursor after each word and insert a space, or to cut and paste words, but I think there must be an easier way. I guess the fix should be something easy, but I just can't figure it out, and hope you might know. My home computer, with Windows Vista, works fine for Arabic even without installing anything; it's just the XP that causes problems (since the version Windows is the English one, not the Arabic one). Thank you. Now it's working again. I don't know what I'm doing to make it work, or not... :-( I just opened a new Word document and it's stopped working again. I notice that when it is working properly, the line between letters is short, but when it isn't working, the line between letters becomes very long. I wonder if this has something to do with it. At the conclusion of the questionnaire, the project's coordinators will use the gathered feedback to find new ways to improve the project and reach out to potential members. The results of the questionnaire will be published in next month's newsletter. If you know of any editors who have edited film articles in the past, please invite them to take part in the questionnaire. Please stop by and take a few minutes to answer the questions so that we can continue to improve our project. Happy editing! Thank YouMarhaba Anas,
Greetings:)I came across your page while researching the history of Syrian Americans. I wanted to asked you...what do you think about the Syriac/Assyrians and the Syriac Orthodox Church. These are from Syria but they differ from the Arabs in the fact that they use the aramaic lanugage and have different traditions and also come from a seperate lineage and geneology. They are similar in other ways to the Syrian Arabs in food and the fact that many can also speak Syrian Arabic. Yet they are a different people. Would they be included under Syrian American/Canadian even if they're not arab? I included a section about them in the Syrian American article. What do you think? Cheers:)SchnitzelMannGreek. 20:01, 10 June 2009 (UTC) Replaceable fair use Image:Maramritaall.jpgThanks for uploading Image:Maramritaall.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself. If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Peripitus (Talk) 03:48, 22 June 2009 (UTC) hi anasthe debate is back up. George Al-Shami (talk) 02:11, 5 August 2009 (UTC) Hip Hop Theater/TheatreI have an issue with an article I created last week and I'm hoping you could help me with it. This month I've been in the process of doing a complete overhaul of the hip hop dance article and I noticed that the theater section was becoming rather large. So in order to follow WP:SS, I created a new page titled hip hop theater and copy-and-pasted everything there. The problem is there is already a page for this but it's called hip hop theat"re". After I finished my page (theatER) I did a google search to see if it would come up and the other page (theatRE) was listed in the results. I honestly did not know that it existed. What do I do now? I was going to blank the theatRE page and put a redirect link there since the theatER page (the one I created) is longer and has references. Am I allowed to do this w/o offending someone and violating policy? Is there a formal process for this? I posted this question another admin's talk page but they never responded so I decided to ask you. Since you're also an admin and since you've created so many articles, I figured you may be more familiar with an issue such as this. Gbern3 (talk) 15:37, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

Salloum, Since you are the founder of the Wikiproject Syria, I write a few lines to you. It concerns the use of the definite and indefinite articles in the English language. I have been busy copy editing a few articles all related the Muslim conquest of the Middle East: Muslim conquest of Syria, Battle of Maraj-al-Debaj, Siege of Damascus (634). The people writing these articles don't use the definite and undefinite articles as often as they should. I guess it is caused by the fact that the Arabian language doesn't use that often the definite article but this is just a guess. But its effect on the quality of the articles is severe. What I was thinking about is that you create a new template message, warning people writing English articles about the use of the definite and the indefinite article. It is one way to avoid many errors in English articles written by Arab speaking people.Wereldburger758 (talk) 11:43, 7 December 2009 (UTC) Faten HamamaThe article Faten Hamama, to which you seem to be the main contributor, is undergoing a review as part of the good article sweeps project. Well, no one seems to have ever had any objection, but now that I am doing some clean-up work, I am wondering if this was actually a mistake or if the article IS connected in some way I fail to see to Syria. Suspension of admin privileges due to inactivityFollowing a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative privileges of users who have been inactive for one year, meaning administrators who have made neither any edits nor any logged actions in over one year. As a result of this discussion, your administrative privileges have been removed pending your return. If you wish to have these privileges reinstated, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e., as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised and that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions). This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts. Although Abu Kamal was widely used by international media when the US army attacked a place in the area, I understand why it has been changed to "Al-Bukamal". But can we lose the dash in the name, it becomes inconvenient when the article links to social media (Facebook etc). It is also strange style, other areas (with two names) typically do not have dash in the name. Abu Dhabi, for example. Also, Al-Bu-Kamal is not a variation, it's just phonetics (how it is pronounced). Can we have the two variations only, Abu Kamal and Al Bukamal? I tried to edit it but I am not that wiki-savvy. PS. I think Abu Kamal is the better choice for a number of reasons. It should not matter how locals pronounce it, a counterexample is Abu Dhabi (locals pronounce it as Bu Dhabi - exacly the same way locals from Abu Kamal pronounce Abu Kamal (Bu Kamal). 2. Abu Kamal was used in media as such. 3. Name was used as Ebu Kamal during the Ottoman times, when the city was built to begin with. But if the name were to stay like this, could we please lose the dash in Al-Bukamal and Al-Bu-Kamal? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.211.131.189 (talk) 12:38, 10 April 2012 (UTC) Non-free rationale for File:Lan a3terf.jpgThanks for uploading or contributing to File:Lan a3terf.jpg.
