IP Block question

On March 23rd 2021 you imposed a 6-month ban on user IP 192.16.96.3 for persistent vandalism, well the ban is expired, and it seems like the user is back to vandalising, I will watch the user in the near future if he/she commits more vandalism, however I am not sure on what to do if he/she does, and if I should do anything at all because of your 6-month block. Thanks - 22:11, 30 September 2021 (UTC)

@RandomEditorAAA: when and if they vandalize again, the usual warnings are in order, up to at least Level 3, then a report at AIV should be done so any admin on duty can take action. -- Alexf(talk) 23:05, 30 September 2021 (UTC)

Arbitration

  • A motion has standardised the 500/30 (extended confirmed) restrictions placed by the Arbitration Committee. The standardised restriction is now listed in the Arbitration Committee's procedures.
  • Following the closure of the Iranian politics case, standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, post-1978 Iranian politics, broadly construed.
  • The Arbitration Committee encourages uninvolved administrators to use the discretionary sanctions procedure in topic areas where it is authorised to facilitate consensus in RfCs. This includes, but is not limited to, enforcing sectioned comments, word/diff limits and moratoriums on a particular topic from being brought in an RfC for up to a year.

Miscellaneous

  • Editors have approved expanding the trial of Growth Features from 2% of new accounts to 25%, and the share of newcomers getting mentorship from 2% to 5%. Experienced editors are invited to add themselves to the mentor list.
  • The community consultation phase of the 2021 CheckUser and Oversight appointments process is open for editors to provide comments and ask questions to candidates.

Hi.

Today I added an external link at “Ибн Фадлан” page. But you considered it inappropriate and deleted it.

My link goes to the newest scientific study from 2021. The work is devoted to resolving the contradictions associated with the trip of Ibn Fadlan to Ancient Russia. This is directly related to the content of the Wikipedia page. This work was published in the scientific-peer-reviewed publication and confirmed by the expert opinion of the Doctor of Historical Sciences of the Belarusian Academy of Sciences.

I would like to ask you to leave this link on the page.

IChubrik (talk) 19:35, 13 November 2021 (UTC)

@IChubrik: It is rather simple. Adding links to your own website is spamming. Also note that your own website is not a reliable source. Please read the linked pages to understand. ArbCom 2021 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 6 December 2021. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2021 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:03, 23 November 2021 (UTC)

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. Query about a block you placed on an IP user

Hello Alexf,

I would like to draw to your attention a block you placed on an IP (User talk:106.69.59.162) which I feel was completely unjustified. You blocked them for vandalism, when in fact, it was actually me, before I had an account, and I was actually on RC patrol. I tripped a whole bunch of filters, including one where I tried to revert userpage vandalism, which I then reported as false positive, however, if you analyse those edits, you will see that they were at the very least good faith edits, if not actually constructive. I have only recently realised that I was blocked for those edits, as the IP must've been reassigned soon afterwards, before I next tried to contribute, so I never saw the block notice at the time.

Please, remember, to assume good faith, that IPs are people too, and that it is possible for an IP to go on RC patrol.

If, after looking closely at the edits that IP / I made you still believe that block was justified, please let me know why. Thanks. Mako001 (talk) 01:32, 25 December 2021 (UTC)

@The Alternate Mako: I see what you mean. Did look wrong at time (and triggered many bot warnings). In any case, it is a moot point, as this was a 31-hour short block back in October, so the account is now free and clear. An IP is not associated to you so your user account has no issues. . -- Alexf(talk) 01:40, 25 December 2021 (UTC)
Thanks, I just thought I should bring it to your attention anyway, since it seemed to have been an erroneous block. I guess it is a good example if a case where, even though an editor is tripping filters with every edit, it may not actually be vandalism. No hard feelings. 🙂 Mako001 (talk) 01:49, 25 December 2021 (UTC)

Hello, I just edited the International School of Monaco's page on Wikipedia today for the first time, to update the school's information about students, programmes available, diplomas offered, etc. I work in the school's marketing department and am paid to update their online information. Administrators' newsletter – January 2022

News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2021).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following consensus at the 2021 RfA review, the autopatrolled user right has been removed from the administrators user group; admins can grant themselves the autopatrolled permission if they wish to remain autopatrolled.

Miscellaneous

  • The functionaries email list (functionaries-en@lists.wikimedia.org) will no longer accept incoming emails apart from those sent by list members and WMF staff. Private concerns, apart from those requiring oversight, should be directly sent to the Arbitration Committee.

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Jumping straight to uw-3 at a newbie's page

Hi Alexf, I really appreciate your work in combatting disruption and vandalism. Without editors like you tirelessly watching out and taking action, articles would quickly degrade and the project would suffer. I really appreciate what you do here.

That said, please draw a distinction between user-warning levels when placing an initial warning at a user talk page. You recently placed this level 3 refspam warning at User talk:RadicalCopyeditor. While a warning citing WP:SELFCITE is appropriate there, this user has a total mainspace edit count of 39 at this writing. Additionally, there are discussions at their Talk page showing them coming on board with various other guidelines based on the types of mistakes new editors always make.

While placing a refspam warning is appropriate for this editor, in my opinion, placing a level 3 refspam warning as the very first warning about this topic is rarely valid for any editor, and especially not for a brand new editor. An amendment at the user's talk page would be a nice gesture. Once again, thanks for all you do here. Cheers, Mathglot (talk) 19:50, 19 January 2022 (UTC)

@Mathglot: I was on vacation so I didn't see this message until now. You may be right. I didn't check the total number of messages. We get hundreds of people spamming their own websites every day, so sometimes things get out of hand. As I see, the user was instructed on what they did wrong and how they should proceed. Thank you. -- Alexf(talk) 02:52, 29 January 2022 (UTC)
Completely understandable. Thanks for the follow-up, and hope the vacation was fun! Mathglot (talk) 02:57, 29 January 2022 (UTC)

Do you know a place on Wikipedia I could get this source translated for a page draft I'm working on?

The source would be this here, and it is in Norwegian https://forum.arkivverket.no/topic/212052-arne-pettersen-siste-innvandrer-som-forlot-ellis-island-1954/

I'm still kind of new to the project, and since computer translators are giving me "bad results", do you know a place I can get help for this in-house. Thebrakeman2 (talk) 23:47, 29 January 2022 (UTC)

@Thebrakeman2: Not really. I would start by looking at the users in Category:User no-4 and asking some of them (look at who is active). Remember to always sign your comments in talk pages by adding four tildes at the end. -- Alexf(talk) 23:54, 29 January 2022 (UTC)
@Alexf: Thank you for the tip! Would you be willing to help work on the page (it's about 45% complete) or are you busy with other matters, IRL or Wikipedia related? Thebrakeman2 (talk) 01:32, 30 January 2022 (UTC)
@Thebrakeman2: I do not speak Norwegian so I can't. Besides I have a long list of translations of articles I have to port from Spanish and Portuguese Wikipedia. Good luck. -- Alexf(talk) 03:04, 30 January 2022 (UTC)
@Alexf: I think you misunderstood, it's an English Wiki page about a Norwegian man. Thebrakeman2 (talk) 15:43, 30 January 2022 (UTC)

@2409:4053:200B:CD48:7D82:2BB9:E7C8:8C3: That is not the way it works. You should warn them upon revert, and if serious enough (and warned sufficiently), you should re port them at AIV. Also, IP Addresses are not blocked forever, as they are usually transitory, and shared by different people. If you have any questions about how Wikipedia works, please ask at the Tea House. -- Alexf(talk) 18:50, 22 February 2022 (UTC)

Revision delete

Hello, Alexf,

I'm not sure why you are using revision delete on edits like this one or this one which aren't offensive edits at all. They are just trollish behavior or standard vandalism. I don't think they qualify under the Criteria for redaction unless I'm missing something here. Did they somehow violate copyright rules? I can't see it. Also, you can do all the revision deletes you need to do on a page's edits at the same time, you don't have to do them one at a time.

Any how, thanks for the truly offensive edits that you remove from public view like the ones on the Hitler family (ugh!). Liz Read! Talk! 22:28, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

Deleting edits

I wanted to ask if you can hide (delete if possible) my edits on the napalm and F.R.A.S. (weapon) page, in the view history. The information of the consulted articles. I ended up copying entire texts from articles that i found to be copyrighted and reclaimed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Napalm and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F.R.A.S._(weapon) Basquyati (talk) 18:34, 11 March 2022 (UTC)

@Basquyati: You would have to identify which ones (suppliying the preper Diffs) as you did several changes to those pages. (see Help:Diff if unsure on how). -- Alexf(talk) 19:19, 11 March 2022 (UTC)
The comparative edition of napalm, is this, in total:

In the F.R.A.S., it is this:
https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Napalm&type=revision&diff=1075828827&oldid=1032104969

Blocking the /64

Can you please read User:TonyBallioni/Just block the /64 and start to block /64s more? Blocking /64s generally won't cause WP:COLLATERAL. Not just blocking one IPv6 address isn't going to cut it in the case of LTAs... thanks. wizzito | say hello! 00:42, 15 March 2022 (UTC)

I am begging you to please, please block the /64! I really don't wish to get mad, but I am getting genuinely annoyed by your adamant refusal to do so. You should have blocked 2601:89:4301:1190:0:0:0:0/64 (block range · block log (global) · WHOIS (partial)) instead of 2601:89:4301:1190:9854:efa4:78ac:6948 (talk · contribs · (/64) · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RBLs · http · block user · block log). You should know as an admin that blocking /64s DO NOT normally cause collateral, yet you continue to block individual IPv6 addresses. That person has completely moved on from that individual IPv6 and is now using 2601:89:4301:1190:4597:3399:4C3C:41C7 (talk · contribs · (/64) · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RBLs · http · block user · block log). Facepalm Facepalm wizzito | say hello! 23:50, 24 March 2022 (UTC)
A person using a /64 is not block evasion as well. For example, you blocked 2A00:23C6:D511:DA01:35EB:D9:A31F:E4C9 (talk · contribs · (/64) · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RBLs · http · block user · block log) and then blocked 2A00:23C6:D511:DA01:9D95:5C68:3D58:2675 (talk · contribs · (/64) · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RBLs · http · block user · block log), who is on the SAME /64, as block evasion. Widr should not have to clean up that mess and finally get to blocking the /64. wizzito | say hello! 23:56, 24 March 2022 (UTC)
@Wizzito: I seldom if ever do rangeblocks as I am uncomfortable with doing it and blocking the wrong range. I understand your request and looked into it now, but it seems that Widr has already blocked the 64 you requested. -- Alexf(talk) 00:18, 25 March 2022 (UTC)

IP rangeblock request

Alexf, you just blocked an IP I reported at AIV (2A00:23C6:D511:DA01:35EB:D9:A31F:E4C9). Unfortunately, after I made the report I found that the vandal had already moved to another IP within the same /64 range. Could you extend this block to 2A00:23C6:D511:DA01:0:0:0:0/64 (talk · contribs · WHOIS)? Disruption from this range dates back to October 2021. --Sable232 (talk) 15:01, 19 March 2022 (UTC)

It might be worth your keeping the occasional eye on Juan Feliciano. The IP and the named vandal both reappeared on 5 March 2022, 10 days after your WP:PP expired; but haven't been seen since, presumably satisfied with their handiwork. Narky Blert (talk) 14:32, 23 March 2022 (UTC)

John Tyler

Hi, thanks for your help at John Tyler. However, I noticed that the protection you put in is shorter than the previous protection which expired only a short time ago. The page has been an LTA target for awhile and a protection of at least several months is probably best. Would you please take a look at the page's protection history and consider making the semi-protection longer? Thanks. Kristoffersonian (talk) 23:02, 24 March 2022 (UTC)

@Kristoffersonian: You are incorrect. The previous semi-protection had expired today. I extended it to 31 March. Page watchlisted. Semi-protection will be extended if needed. Please report users to AIV if needed too. Thanks. -- Alexf(talk) 23:07, 24 March 2022 (UTC)
How am I incorrect? I said the previous protection expired a short time ago and that the protection you put in is shorter than the previous which is true. Please make the semi-protection longer. This page has been consistently vandalized despite multiple protections for long time. This has been going on for months. Look at the protection history. Kristoffersonian (talk) 23:12, 24 March 2022 (UTC)
@Kristoffersonian: Oh I see what you mean now. We try to keep pages open as much as possible, per Wikipedia's policies. Page has been watchlisted. Should they continue, then it will be extended for longer periods of time. Per your request, it has been extended to 7 April 2022. -- Alexf(talk) 23:16, 24 March 2022 (UTC)
I still think two weeks is too short. The past few protections for this page have been too short. One of the previous protections was one month in length and that didn't do the trick. Each time the vandalism returns. Look closer. Kristoffersonian (talk) 23:21, 24 March 2022 (UTC)
@Kristoffersonian: That is as far as I am prepared to go today. As I said, I am watching the page, and I am sure you are too. Whenever something like this arises, you can request protection at RFPP, so anyone on duty will respond. Thanks. -- Alexf(talk) 23:34, 24 March 2022 (UTC)

FYI, this "helpful" user is a WP:HAND sock of WP:Sockpuppet investigations/CalebHughes, whose other socks necessitated the protection. Favonian (talk) 06:43, 25 March 2022 (UTC)

New administrator activity requirement

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

I'm scratching my head

Hi - so, I just reverted an IP address spamming Indian passport. Twinkle took me to their talk page to issue a warning, and I noticed that you had already warned them on 4 May about doing presumably similar stuff at Passport - so far, so mundane. Here's the bit that's confusing me: Passport wasn't edited at all on 4 May, and the edit that I reverted today appears to be the only one that the IP in question has ever made. What's going on? Girth Summit (blether) 10:51, 14 May 2022 (UTC)

@Girth Summit: Sorry for the delay. As was indicated in my user page, I was out of the country with no connectivity for two weeks. I don't remember this one. I suspect it was triggered by Filter 793, for spamming telephone numbers. -- Alexf(talk) 14:00, 27 May 2022 (UTC)

50.74.56.130

Hi Alexf, I think 50.74.56.130's removals were made in good faith; I just had to revdel others' reinstatement of the content as violations of the copyright policy. If it was a justified block, I'd probably re-block Johnniecowboy for sockpuppetry or block evasion, but I think a proper measure would be removing the IP block instead. Threats of ISP Communication on My Talk Page

I have reverted what is difficult not to describe as a veiled threat on my talk page from your account.

Simply calling edits you disagree with "vandalism" and leaving up a well formatted statement that you'll "contact my ISP" if I post information about an issue your colleagues are actively trying to suppress is ridiculous, aggressive, and ineffective. I am not intimidated by your threat, and I'm confused what you thought the end result could have possibly been by doing that?

You should stop that kind of behaviour immediately. 71.65.65.144 (talk) 21:40, 9 July 2022 (UTC)

It seems you misunderstood. It is not a veiled threat. It is a standard identifier for an ISP account. It is not your Talk Page. You do not have an account. You can easily create one and avoid the problem you seem to think you are having. See Wikipedia:Why create an account?. The reason that particular IP Address got that message is because it has been repeatedly used for vandalism in the past. This is not saying the current user of that IP (you), had anything to do with it. IP Address assignments change. You may get another one next time. Avoid the issue and create an account. -- Alexf(talk) 01:31, 10 July 2022 (UTC)
I misunderstood nothing. Threatening to contact users' ISP for making edits you have material disagreement with is juvenile and inappropriate for this forum. I am not interested in the deflections but merely communicating to you how it comes across.
Looking at the notes on the talk page for this IP, I see that these are in fact not vandalisms but a user trying to integrate cited material about a scandal involving someone with a declared conflict of interest with the wikipedia editor groups. I can't determine if you did not research before doing this or if you were already in awareness and simply didn't care, but perhaps you're using a non-conventional definition of "vandalism" in either case.
Words mean things, and the words you're using don't mean the things you're expecting them to. I don't care if you've been here for 15 minutes or 15 years, I just simply want adult correspondence on the topic. The 'good ole boy' treatment over this issue is transparent to literally anyone reading. 71.65.65.144 (talk) 01:47, 10 July 2022 (UTC)

Olivia Newton John "vandal"

It turns out that 200.68.172.38 (talk · contribs · count) had duplicated content, likely inadvertently. 2806:2f0:8440:4a0b:c9f:17e2:1e0d:629 (talk · contribs · count) aka 2806:2f0:8440:4a0b:f42b:30dd:9a4:739c (talk · contribs · count) was removing the duplicated content. To me, it appeared that the bottom half the article including content, sources, and categories were being deleted. As the latter anons never ever left an edit summary as to why nor left anything on their talk page, I concluded it was vandalism. What should I do to make amends? My apology. @JayBeeEll: @Aoi: Block extended for a bit - TPA added. It is a public address. Can't block for 6 months. -- Alexf(talk) 22:11, 10 September 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for that. I'm not sure what you mean by your last two sentences, since the /64 range has been repeatedly blocked for longer periods of time in the past [11] (most recently by Ponyo and EvergreenFir). JBL (talk) 23:51, 10 September 2022 (UTC)
I also don't see how the "public address" bit applies. This is a static, single-allocation IPv6 range that has been repeatedly used for disruption and block evasion for the past 9 months. I've reblocked for 6 months, the same as EvergreenFir's March block that had since expired.-- Jezebel's Ponyobons mots 18:47, 12 September 2022 (UTC)
@Ponyo: Ok. As it is owned by British Telecom, I thought it was public. Maybe I am wrong. -- Alexf(talk) 19:04, 12 September 2022 (UTC)

Wikiproject Military history coordinator election voting opening soon!

Voting for the upcoming project coordinator election opens in a few hours (00:01 UTC on 15 September) and will last through 23:59 on 28 September. A team of up to ten coordinators will be elected for the next coordination year. The project coordinators are the designated points of contact for issues concerning the project, and are responsible for maintaining our internal structure and processes. They do not, however, have any authority over article content or editor conduct, or any other special powers. More information on being a coordinator is available here. Voting is conducted using simple approval voting and questions for the candidates are welcome. If you have any questions, you can contact any member of the current coord team. Correction to previous election announcement

Just a quick correction to the prior message about the 2022 MILHIST coordinator election! I (Hog Farm) didn't proofread the message well enough and left out a link to the election page itself in this message. The voting will occur here; sorry about the need for a second message and the inadvertent omission from the prior one. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 17:40, 15 September 2022 (UTC)

Hello Alexf. Another admin has posted at RFPP requesting a much longer semiprotection for this page. You might want to take a look. Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 18:14, 17 September 2022 (UTC)

Some falafel for you!

Hi, here is some falafel! Those look like pickles in the picture to me. I would have chosen no pickles but oh well. Enjoy. Rosedaler (talk) 02:37, 26 September 2022 (UTC)
Thanks! Falafel is always good. Pickles work for me. -- Alexf(talk) 05:21, 26 September 2022 (UTC)

Greg P Russell

My name is Greg P Russell and you have blocked me from my own page which I don’t appreciate what so ever. I made adjustments in the bio because it doesn’t reflect the things that I would like to see and there are inaccuracies as to what was originally on my Wikipedia page. I would appreciate you unblocking me so I can edit my own page please. 2600:6C50:157F:E3F9:9D78:DD69:6B9:9F05 (talk) 17:05, 30 September 2022 (UTC)

As you do not link to the page in question, I have no idea what you are talking about. All I see is a message from an IP Address that has not edited in Wikipedia before. You have to be more specific so I can take a look, and respond properly. There must be a reason if you were blocked. The reason should be explained in the blocking message, along with the proper way to request an unblock. Any admin then would be able to respond, and if there was an error, correct it. -- Alexf(talk) 18:20, 30 September 2022 (UTC)
