Deletion of Lzip

Hello Alex. I am Antonio Diaz, the author of several Free Software programs like Ocrad or Ddrescue. Some days ago I finished the first version of a lossless data compression program named Lzip. Before announcing it, I searched Wikipedia and I saw an article of the same name dedicated to an April fool's day joke.

I wrote to the author of the joke (talk) and, as he didn't respond, I spent the whole Sunday changing the article to describe the real tool. It is not my intention to become a Wikipedia editor, but I don't want my tool to be identified with a hoax, you know.

Hello Antonio. If that is indeed the case, you would have to provide reliable third party sources to prove it. Furthermore, you wrote "Diaz made the first public release of lzip, version 0.1, in August 2008." This has two problems, one a conflict of interest, and two, it shows (beta?) software, hardly encyclopedic material. I agree Lzip is not (yet) encyclopedic material, but this don't give you the right to insult me by stating in the deletion page that Lzip is a hoax. Lzip is a new project and I can't provide the sources you ask, but you can see herethat it is not a hoax. So, please change the cause of deletion of Lzip to something not derogatory to my project. It is not an insult but a statement of what it looked like at the time of deletion, given the state of the article, and the history of it (already marked as a hoax before). deleted "Dendura"

Hey Alex, it seems you have deleted my 1st article with Wiki for the following reason.

A7 (group): Doesn't indicate importance or significance of a group/company/etc.: Doesn't indicate notability under WP:MUSIC)

I don't understand this, as I have made this article on a band that has had its music featured in a movies, and on TV. As this is my 1st article, can you please help me know what is needed to restore my article if this isn't a mistake.

As the reason for deletion said, it did not assert notability under WP:MUSIC. The only references it had (none inline) were two external references, pointing to myspace (not a reliable source) and the band's website, also not an acceptable reference. Read the indicated page and it will tell you what is needed. Remember Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a catalog or list. Please understand that Wikipedia is not censored. If you dislike seeing pages with names as Fuck (disambiguation) which you tried to remove, then don't read them. If the word bothers you, then Wikipedia may not be for you. Whoo hoo!

Hi. Please take another look at this page that you deleted. Although it might have been a bit spammy, it wasn't eligible for a G11 which requires that the article in question be "fundamentally rewritten to become encyclopedic". The article had plenty of valid NPOV information regarding what is now somewhat of a cultural phenomenon. I'm really not interested in going through the tedious DRV process. Quick notice, (Important!)

You deleted my article on Jim Wood while I was in the middle of actually writing his bio which detailed how he was important. It is still not finished as I am reseraching it and information is hard to come by, or at least, hard to sort through. He is the current State Auditor of Arkansas, has many news reports, a VoteSmart Page, and was reelected with half a million votes. He is also a former State Senator and State Representative. I think that he meets the Notability requirements. It had no references other than a link to myspace, a non-acceptable source. In order to understand what's required please see WP:MUSIC. Hywel Fychan

As the who deleted this article, could you please let us know which of the two notable people by that name was intended? Was it the 14th century one who is linked from Dafydd Gam, or was it the 9th century one who may be the same as Hywel ap Rhodri Molwynog. The 9th century person appears in the Dictionary of National Biography as "Howel Vychan". The boilerplate in the notice to the contributor is not helpful. The article was deleted way back on March 25, 2008. It did not assert notability as it had no references or even external links at all the whole text was:

Well, I looked again. It says: "she was Vice President & Chief Operating Officer at Toronto General Hospital ... she likes to hike, swim and golf". There are countless business people, CEOs, Vice-Presidents and high executives of multitudes of companies, big and small all over. That post alone does not qualify her to be notable. There are several problems here. Besides the copyright issue, for which the article was deleted, you have to remember this is an encyclopedia. "Invest in China" does not look like an encyclopedic article. Your account also has username issues and possible conflicts of interest. Please read BFAQ and the pages indicated. Deleted Article, InsWeb

Hello Alexf. On Saturday, Sept. 6th, you deleted my entry about the publicly traded company InsWeb (NASDAQ: INSW) because you thought it was blatant advertising. Could you please provide an explanation as to why a brief history of a company, a picture of a corporate building, and a brief explanation of what the company does, is considered advertising? The entry for esurance is very similar; it has a simple description of what the company does, where it is located, its history, etc. and the only references are about its mascot. OK. I checked the other page you mentioned and see the similarities. Even though other companies pages should not count or have bearing, I see your point and reconsidered. The article has been restored and I placed a {{hangon}} tag for you, This will delay the deletion. It is up to you to fix the article. It does read like advertisement. Elton Yiying Chen

I attempted to create a page about a fellow student of mine called Elton Yiying Chen recently. However, you deleted it before I could finish. You see, our school (Albany High School, California) is doing a project for 11th graders in which we write short biographies about our classmates. However, my friend Elton is very busy man. Despite being who many would call a nerd, he is actually quite popular at our school, so many people are interested in finding out more about him. He doesn't have time to answer everyone's questions, so I decided to help out my classmates by creating a wikipedia page about him. A few days ago, I received permisson from our teacher to let me create this page, which he would later inspect to check if there were any jokes about him. This would greatly benefit many of the students here so please reconsider the article. This project is due at the end of our school quarter (October 31, 2008), so it only needs to be up until then.

PS - He was actually born in a Rancid concert, so please don't take that as a joke. Also, the part about "playing oral" actually was a joke. I apologize for that, I was going to delete in a few minutes. By the way, he is isn't the son of Chen Kenichi. Deleted Page

From Osims (talk) 20:51, 9 September 2008 (UTC) : You deleted my page ("Oliver Sims"), and I wondered why. The reason code you gave was "db|nn-autobio)". I checked in "speedy delete" but could not find a match for these codes.

I wonder if you could tell me why you deleted the page, since various other authors etc. have a very similar page. In addition, I am already referred to from at least two existing pages.

I'd like to understand how I can change things so that my page will be acceptable, given that other people with similar background to mine have their pages.

It means autobiography. Other authors may have similar pages, I don't know, and they may or may not be wrong, but it is not an acceptable reason for inclusion. Bojan Krkic

Hi alex i'm sorry for my headines in editing Bojan Krkic's page but i think that is should be written that he is Spanish-Serbian footballer, because his father is from Serbia so it is not correct to say that he is just Spanish.

I do not agree. Unless he is a Serbian citizen (holds a Serbian passport) and you can show it, (I don't know, he may be), the father is Serbian, not him. He was born in Spain, lives in Spain, and plays for Spain. Would you call Messi Italian/Argentine? Why would that be important? It is not like the case of Marcos Senna where he does have two nationalities. Here it does not seem to be the same case. -- Alexf^42 21:58, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

OK! It is not important, but if your father is (for example) born in France and your all family from father's side is from France then you have France descent. You don't need to be French but you definitely have French descent. I'm not too keen on renaming him, especially since it sounds like he might return to SPA ways. I'd say if he wants the new name, he should create it instead, as long as you didn't disable his account creation. If he does create the account, you need to tell him to be contributive. I made sure Autoblock was disabled (undid the block and reblocked then I found it wasn't necessary :( as autoblock was already clear on the first). As it says in the deletion comment (yes, it did have an explanation), because the article was a redirect to a non-valid target (CSD#R1). Looking back, the original article was changed to a redirect in August, as it does not make much sense to have an article on a school's motto (besides issues of notability). The redirect should have pointed to the school I guess, instead it was an R1 case. -- Alexf^42 11:46, 14 September 2008 (UTC)

Speedy deletion

I declined the speedy deletion of Karan Singh Grover as notability was clearly asserted (major role in a popular Indian soap opera and host of a reality TV series), but I have cleaned up the article and added some references. Please also note it is considered courteous to inform the creator of an article (User:Lizcook) that you have nominated the article for deletion (speedy or otherwise), you do not appear to have done so in this case. --Canley (talk) 12:56, 14 September 2008 (UTC)

Not at all. I knew about the new account and it is indeed the same person. His explanation for the "liberals" name was plausible but I still ruled it as a username violation. You are correct on the policy. Here it is not two accounts, as one is indef. It is the same case as when we allow a username violator to change to a new name, or just create a new account instead. I have just been informed that the site that I have been trying to have published EliteAnswers.com does not have apporopriate references. However the references that I have are media outlets for the organization I am trying to create a page for. It is unlikely that an academic journal will have written about the company. Of the references that are there, some are thrid party, and are quite reputable sources. Therefore I am not sure what the concern is and I need some help with that.

What other ways do I have to modify the article in order to get it approved for submission?

questions re. duplicate topic headings and saving unfinished content

Hello Alexf

I see that you flagged my page on Ron Gorchov for two reasons. I am new to Wikipedia and I appreciate your feedback. I have two questions that perhaps you can help me answer when you have a moment.

First: the reason I made duplicate topic headings ("Ron gorchov" and "Ron Gorchov") is because I couldn't figure out how to capitalize the 'G' in Gorchov on the first page (it automatically showed up as "gorchov"), so I created a second with the capital 'G.' Now that the second page exists, do you know how I go about deleting the first page, since obviously there is no need for two pages on the same topic and I would prefer to have both the first and last name capitalized?

Second: is there a way to save content while I'm working on it but before I post it? I explored the "Sandbox" option but perhaps I didn't understand it correctly. Do you recommend that I take down the page altogether and save the content in another place while I work on it? How do I do that?

Again, I'm new and still slogging through the protocol here. Any help you can give is appreciated.

When an article is wrongly named, you can use the move command to rename it, instead of creating a new one. I had already deleted the page as duplicate. Admins can delete pages, editors cannot. What you can do if you want your page deleted is to blank the page and put a {{db-author}} tag on it. This will signal admins to delete it. On your second question, you can create a subpage on your user space by adding a slash and the new page name to your userpage's URL (follow the link for instructions). There you can work on it, make it look nice, establish notability and then copy to a new article when ready. When you want that page deleted, just place a {{db-u1}} on it to signal admins for deletion. Simple. -- Alexf^42 22:57, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

Alexf, could you kindly take one more look at the BPL page? I did everything I could to make it Neutral POV, remove peacock words, remove uncited assertions and anything that looked like advertisement or puffery. He is actually one of the leaders of a local style or genre of writing that is unique to Pittsburgh and he has inspired and supported many other local writers. Hi. Re this article deleted for copyvio, the editor has become fairly....insistent... that a) American copyright law allowed the copy as it was out of copyright, and that b) he'd got permission from the website owner - both of these are discussed on his userpage (User_talk:RichardBond), along with his ....thoughts... about what's happened. I'm only interested as I removed a few disparaging remarks about editors from the article before it was deleted, and I'm curious as to the copyright position in this case - was the copyright permission (apparently) obtained not valid because he didn't follow policy in regards to obtaining permission (emails from the copyright owner to the WP email address etc.), or was there some other aspect of this issue that meant it got deleted ? It is not a question of sources and notability as much as it is of advertising. Also, please do not duplicate entries in talk pages. Hi Alexf V. new to all this. Noticed you've deleted my article on The Cesarians. They are mentioned in a wikipedia article about another band The Last Drive and I was trying to offer some more information about them. The article itself has 4 links or references to other wikipedia entries namely, Luke Haines, Christian Death, Michael Nyman and Nigel Kennedy, all of which are related to them. Not sure if this was clear (or if indeed this is!) Do I get the right to appeal?!

Douglas Romayne - COI

This article appears to be a COI under the Wikipedia standard, as it appears to be an autobiography that has been posted by user Bleu Jean Management and a user with the IP addrss 216.86.198.37. Bleu Jean Management is this persons management company, and writing an article about someone you are in bussiness with is a direct violation of the Wikipedia COI rules. Also the section on "Albums" is a blatent attempt for self promotion, because it send people to iTunes, MovieScore Media and CD Baby where the CD can be purchased. Dear Alexf,

Could you recover en send me the deleted page of "Murray Carter" to me? That article is deleted for reasons that were unclear to me at first. It was my first article about a well known bladesmith and first Caucasian that received the status of a Japanese bladesmith. I suspect that since English is not my native language, I lacked in describing sufficient relevant information about the person to illustrate his importance for the knife making industry and bladesmithing in general.

I received help from another knife enthusiast, that is an English speaking native and as a result, I've rewrote some of the text to make it more "notable" .

Question about Image

I thought you are experienced and would help me. Please tell me how am I to know that the image I have searched is not copyright protected or protected? Because I can't figure it out, and Wikipedia help page says something of finding this on google image search. But how? Also tell whether Picasa web album is free or not.

You can learn about images at Wikipedia:Images. If the site you take the image from does not have a clear Creative Commons GFDL license, then you probably can't use it. I did not "nominate" the article for deletion. I merely added a !vote at his articles for deletion discussion page. Instead of explaining the person to other editors, what you should do is enter your comments in the AfD page, providing reliable information and add validation and notability information to the article before it is deleted. -- Alexf^42 12:20, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

I did check and I do not see his edits as vandalism. Furthermore you have not explained to him why you consider he should not make them. I do agree (my personal opinion) that religious categories are not needed/required and have no place unless it plays an important in the subject's life. Still, it is not vandalism but a difference of opinion or an edit dispute if you will. Your continuously warning him without explaining your reasoning in plain text, and inviting him to discuss the issue in the Talk page obviously did not do much to engage the editor. Was it just because he was previously blocked twice that you figured that you're doing nothing wrong by blocking him again? I suggest this is what occured because it is blatantly obvious that 24.61.243.203 (talk · contribs) is the new IP address of 24.147.246.76 (talk · contribs), yet unlike the latter, the former wasn't blocked by an admin. Both IP addresses do the same exact edits to the same exact pages while refusing under any circumstances to discuss their unsourced BLP-violative edits. I think you are missing metaphors here. Book burning is censorship. Wikipedia is not censored. What we are talking about here is something entirely different, which are the rules for notability. Please read about the Five Pillars of Wikipedia to understand how the encyclopedia works. AS per your examples (e.g. Google Reader) they are sufficiently notable and verified by reliable sources.
