Kia ora! For the first half of 2024 I'm the Aotearoa Wikipedian-at-Large, based in Christchurch and funded by a grant from Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand. As part of the project I'm running regular meetups in Tūranga where local Wikipedians can meet, chat, help each other out and collaborate on projects. I'll also be organising edit-a-thons, wikiblitzes, and training for new editors. The goal is to grow the editor community in Christchurch and convince local institutions that Wikipedia is worth taking seriously.
We're having an initlal coffee in Foundation Cafe on Sunday 18 February to talk about what Christchurch Wikipedians might like to do; come along if you're free, or drop me a line at mikerove.wiki if you have ideas or suggestions.

I understand you removed my edits on the Port Hills wikipedia page for plagiarism - I cited my sources and don't believe news articles would be copyrighted? If you did this because the references should be removed from the article, you have misunderstood the situation. Most likely, the article originally contained both <ref name="foo">...</ref> and one or more <ref name="foo"/> referring to it. Someone then removed the <ref name="foo">...</ref> but left the <ref name="foo"/>, which results in a big red error in the article. I replaced one of the remaining <ref name="foo"/> with a copy of the <ref name="foo">...</ref>; I did not re-insert the reference to where it was deleted, I just replaced one of the remaining instances. What you need to do to fix it is to make sure you remove all instances of the named reference so as to not leave any big red error.
If you reverted because I made an actual mistake, please be sure to also correct any reference errors in the page so I won't come back and make the same mistake again. Also, please post an error report at User talk:AnomieBOT so my operator can fix me! If the error is so urgent that I need to be stopped, also post a message at User:AnomieBOT/shutoff/OrphanReferenceFixer. Thanks! Sources needed for Days of the Year pages
I see you recently accepted a pending change to February 1 that did not include a direct source.
All new additions to the DOY pages without references are now being either reverted on-sight or in some cases where the patroller is especially motivated, immediately sourced. I've gone ahead and backed this edit out.
All the pages in the Days of the Year project have had pending changes protection turned on to prevent vandalism and further addition of entries without direct sources. As a pending changes patroller, it's not required, but it sure would be helpful if you didn't accept additions to day of year pages where no direct source has been provided on that day of year page. The burden to provide sources for additions to these pages is on the editor who adds or restores material to these pages.
Hi mate. I see you edited down my contribution to Māori language. That's fine, since the lead was way too long. I've cut it down as well. My concern that brought me to edit the page was that a large chunk of the lead was devoted to the 19th century orthographic process of the lead. I really didn't think that was needed in the lead - it's too complex and trivial to be summed up, and the lead should be a short history of the language.
I have also found multiple sources to describe the language as a lingua franca, including here, here,, here, here and here.
Also, I've trimmed the lead down from your 450 words to 404. I'm probably going to stop editing. It wasn't meant to be more than an occasional thing, and I've found the environment on here stressful. 222.152.26.228 (talk) 05:22, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
Substitute warning templates
Hi! Please substitute warning templates with subst:, otherwise at least the warning level 1 templates show the name of the currently logged in user browsing the page in the "Hello, I'm <user>" template text instead of your name. Hello, I'm Roger 8 Roger. I noticed that you made a comment on the page Māori history: that didn't seem very civil, so it may have been removed. Wikipedia is built on collaboration, so it's one of our core principles to interact with one another in a polite and respectful manner. If you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. I suggest you stop these accusations that I am being deliberately disruptive before it is taken further. This should be a level 2 warning because you have done it before. I cannot help it if you do not understand what is happening about macrons or how the English language works. If you want to add macrons everywhere then go ahead and do it, I cannot be bothered discussing the matter any more, but don't accuse other editors of being disruptive for not joining in on your campaign. If you want something productive to do you could always look at this Maori history article because there is plenty of improvement that could be made.Roger 8 Roger (talk) 20:38, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
WP:DTR. My summary notes that you deliberately didn't add a macron, as you've said in the past you do it intentionally. I wasn't being disruptive, nor are the people who support using them. Using macrons or not does affect the word. It is the same English word with the same meaning. It is the same as the word cafe which is sometimes written café and sometimes as cafe, depending on the writer's mood. If I was writing a Maori language word I would add a macron in the same way I would any diacritics if writing any foreign language word, if they were part of that foreign language. I'd write Mädchen (girls) if I wrote that word because it is a German word, never used in English, but I'd write Dusseldorf, not Düsseldorf because the word has become assimilated into English (and in so doing the umlaut has been dropped) so I am using it as an English word. (People who write it in English as Düsseldorf do it for their own reasons, it's not necessary - the same as words like Maori. Please also consider that very many quality sources do not add macrons to Maori words, so if quoting them we must also not use macrons. When I say I intentionally do not add diacritics to English words, I mean if it means I have to press extra keys to do it, I don't. If I copy and paste, the macrons come with the copy and I let it be, I don't press extra keys to remove the macron. The confusion over macrons and spellings is widespread in NZ, which is another topic. You might not agree with me, and I cannot help that, but I think the best thing to do is just accept it when a macron is not added, by me or anyone else, and add one afterwards if you want to, but don't accuse editors of being disruptive because they do something you don't like. Greetings, I noticed you reverted an anon editor who changed "a herbal" to "an herbal" on the Mitragyna speciosa. But...but on your user page you state that you 'strongly prefer American English'. So I'm confused, as 'an herbal' is strongly American usage, while 'a herbal' is strongly British English. I was hoping someone would ask a question about this topic...
I don't use New Zealand English nor British English. ;) I find their spelling odd, lol. (E.g. program or programme, the "me" at the end is completly unnecessary. Same with the "ize"or "ise" suffix. I've used the US spelling since I was child (E.g color or favorite). I acknowledge that it has made some New Zealanders upset in the past, but I can't get used to their spelling of some English words.
Pleased to reach out likewise. Personally, it takes effort for me to vocalize an 'h' at the beginning of 'herbal'. Yet, purely by normal spelling and grammar, it should obviously be HERbal. An odd one. cheers. anastrophe, an editor he is.04:39, 20 April 2024 (UTC)
Hi, nice work on the Southshore article. I can't help but notice that you keep adding comma splices. I realised that it might be a good idea to help teach you what they are, so we can reach GA status. A comma splice is defined by the Oxford dictionary as "an instance of using a comma to link two independent clauses". An example could be "Fejioa have a green colour, fruit is healthy." This comma should not be there as the text following the comma can be a sentence on its own. To fix it, you can replace it with a full stop, or (if the clauses are related enough) you can replace it with the one of my favourite pieces of punctuation, the semicolon. ―Panamitsu(talk)12:58, 1 June 2024 (UTC)

Because you have claimed that my fixes are "criticism" (Also, please stop criticizing/confronting my work, you've done it a few times this month, editing WP is starting to become an unpleasant experience), I wanted to tell you about comma splices so you can fix them yourself, to which you responded with "deny". After realising that I possibly did not give a good enough explanation, I came here, and you have been completely unco-operative.

Panamitsu; greetings from that administrator. I suggest it might be best if you both avoided having contact with one another. For some reason that I cannot follow, you simply don't get on with one another. If one of you edits an article and the other doesn't agree with those edits, why not just take that article off your watchlist and work on something else instead? After all, Wikipedia won't be finished in a wee while, there is heaps to do, so it shouldn't be too hard to find something else to work on. Does that sound ok? Schwede6601:36, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
