We have had 58 people sign up for this drive so far, which compares favorably with our last drive, and 27 have copy-edited at least one article. If you have signed up but have not yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!
Progress report:
Our target of completing the 2010 articles has almost been reached, with only 56 remaining of the 194 we had at the start of the drive. The last ones are always the most difficult, so thank you if you are able to help copy-edit any of the remaining articles. We have reduced the total backlog by 163 articles so far.
Special thanks:
Special thanks to Stfg, who has been going through the backlog and doing some preliminary vetting of the articles—removing copyright violations, doing initial clean-up, and nominating some for deletion. This work has helped make the drive a more pleasant experience for all our volunteers.

How was Brazil?
I've never been there, but I've heard from people who have that it is a really wonderful place. I was wondering if you'd be available/interested to help with copyediting on Ahalya? I've been helping the article's writer with it a bit lately, and I think we've almost got the prose to featured standards. It's an article about a Hindu goddess, I found it pretty interesting. It has been through a couple peer reviews and a failed FAC, so I'd really like to see it succeed.
Brazil was amazing! (There are tons of pictures.) I never imagined I'd be exchanging cheek kisses with so many Wikipedians :)
What a timely request – I'm helping out with a Women's History Month editathon today, and I was planning on introducing some newbies to the joys of copyediting. If you see any random strangers jump into the article, worry not, I'll keep an eye on them and make sure they don't break anything. Accedietalk to me19:07, 17 March 2012 (UTC)
Nothing like getting my feet wet and jumping into editing my first article today. It's been a long time coming. I am confident with a few more tweaks and then some photos it will be up in Main Space in the near future. Thank you for your kind words. Best,ChesPal (talk) 03:44, 18 March 2012 (UTC)
Hi, and welcome back from Brasil. Ahalya's an interesting article; I worked on the referencing ({sfn}) some days ago. Enjoy the read. You might like Rainilaiarivony, too (also at FAC), and his last wife Ranavalona III, which is a poignant story. Alarbus (talk) 03:48, 18 March 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the suggestions! I have to admit, I've never enjoyed formatting references (even in grad school), but copyediting FACs makes me appreciate the level of nuance involved. I even managed to stump two veteran Wikipedians yesterday by suggesting that a newbie use an endnote in her first article, which is something neither of them had ever actually done. (We all had to spend a fair amount of time digging through the MoS to figure it out.) I'd never have known about endnotes if it weren't for c/eing all of Mark's nutty Protestant FACs :) Accedietalk to me16:16, 18 March 2012 (UTC)
Some people eschew referencing templates, which is a shame, because they really make things work properly and aid verification. With {{sfn}} you can stop thinking about junk like how they collate; it's automatic. For endnotes (explanatory notes) {{efn}} rulz (use {{refn}} for non-lower-alpha). You know who wrote these templates? Charlie Gillingham. For an interesting speciaised use of notes, see this edit. It's 3 notes that are local to the infobox (being lower-roman is what segregates them).
I worked on Ranavalona III more but still have about a dozen more refs to rework into {sfn} form. It will look like Rainilaiarivony when I finish.
Mark's the one who asked me to work on Ahalya and I got him to use {efn} on Hensley. Check out Crisco 1492's articles; Sitti Nurbaya, for example. p.s. I spiffed-up my user page; be among the first to scroll through it (note scrollbar on right;). Alarbus (talk) 05:21, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for your edits. I am reverting some of reorganization edits in "Assessment and remembrance". The second para of the section "Another view does not regard the panchakanya ... " is negative and does not advocate worship. I am just removing the headings. In "Modern renditions", most dances older than 21st century and films and TV serial also in 20th century. I am removing the headings and reorganizing a bit. I removed 1 heading from "Curse" as most stone motif tales talk about a "divine" Rama. If you want to anything else that improves the article further, please go ahead. I do want to take it to FAC again and hopefully see it pass in Women's Day Month. :) --RedtigerxyzTalk17:58, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
I'm sure the FAC reviewers will find about 4305930458 other things that need doing... but that's what the process is for, I suppose ;) Good luck! Accedietalk to me23:45, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for helping the article improve to FA standards by your copyedits ! Luckily the FAC reviewers missed some 4305930400 other things that need doing... ;) --RedtigerxyzTalk17:58, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
Hello Maryana, I am sending this message to editors who signed up for the Women's History Month Edit-a-thon. Please help spread the word. HighBeam Research--an online, pay-for-use search engine for newspapers, magazines, academic journals, newswires, trade magazines and encyclopedias has agreed to give free, full-access, 1-year accounts for up to 1000 Wikipedia editors to use. HighBeam has access to over 80 million articles from 6,500 publications, most of which are not available for free elsewhere on the internet. Aside from a free 7-day trial (credit card required), access to HighBeam would cost $30 per month or $200 per year for the first year and $300 for subsequent years, so this is a wonderful, free, no-strings-attached opportunity. To qualify, editors must have at least a 1 year-old account with 1000 edits. Please add your name to the WP:HighBeam/Applications account sign-up page if you are interested. Cullen328Let's discuss it18:45, 18 March 2012 (UTC)
would love to collaborate on russian women writers pages
Hi! Sorry we didn't talk more during the editathon! I have quite a few books at home about russian poetry (mostly in translation, but some Russian and Ukrainian), and women writers generally speaking. When I get back to Portland, I'm going to pull out some of that stuff, and then do a bit more searching. I will definitely seek you out as I find more. :)
-Selena Deckelmann (talk) 02:54, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
w00t! I will eagerly await this collaboration and possibly poke you about it, because my tragically underused MA in Slavic Lit is beginning to accumulate cobwebs. Accedietalk to me03:08, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
Would either of you be interested in working on an article about a Russian woman mountaineer and botanist, Vera Komarkova? Here's her New York Times obituary, Vera Komarkova, Mountaineer, Dies at 62. I worked on the biography of her climbing companion Arlene Blum and have some book reference material in English about Komarkova, but I don't read Russian. Let me know. Cullen328Let's discuss it03:27, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
I'd still love to help! I'm not Russian, either – Ukrainian :) My Czech is definitely okay enough for skimming references. Looks like she's mentioned on both Russian and Czech Wikipedia on the Cho Oyu articles but doesn't have her own. Accedietalk to me03:37, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, looks like the relevant policy is here. Seems like a rather arbitrary cut-off to me – especially given that it's smack dab in the middle of the Baby Boom, which is when a lot of very prominent and notable historic figures were born... If I were you, I'd go look at the history of the WikiProject Women's History page to figure out when that policy was created and if it there was any discussion about it. You might propose a policy change on the talk page. Wikipedia: the rules anyone (...with consensus!) can edit :) Accedietalk to me01:42, 22 March 2012 (UTC)
Of the 70 people who signed up for this drive, 40 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Special acknowledgement goes out to Lfstevens, who did over 200 articles, most of them in the last third of the drive, and topped all three leaderboard categories. You're a superstar! Stfg and others have been pre-checking the articles for quality and conformance to Wikipedia guidelines; some have been nominated for deletion or had some preliminary clean-up done to help make the copy-edit process more fun and appealing. Thanks to all who helped get those nasty last few articles out of the target months.
Progress report
During this drive we were successful in eliminating our target months—October, November, and December 2010—from the queue, and have now eliminated all the 2010 articles from our list. We were able to complete 500 articles this month! End-of-drive results and barnstar information can be found here.
When working on the backlog, please keep in mind that there are options other than copy-editing available; some articles may be candidates for deletion, or may not be suitable for copy-editing at this time for other reasons. The {{GOCEreviewed}} tag can be placed on any article you find to be totally uneditable, and you can nominate for deletion any that you discover to be copyright violations or completely unintelligible. If you need help deciding what to do, please contact any of the coordinators.
Thank you for participating in the March 2012 drive! All contributions are appreciated. Our next copy-edit drive will be in May.
Hi again, hope things are going well. I just finished a marathon week getting Elias Abraham Rosenberg up to FA, the FAC went fast and furious. I was wondering if you could help me with some copyediting on William T. Anderson? You probably haven't heard of him, he's more or less Kansas' answer to Che Guevara. It's kinda a long article by my standards tough to get it all straightened out. I think I took care of most of the real gaffs though. The templates are still pretty shoddy, Alarbus would be disappointed (I'll convert them all eventually though). It's not terribly funny though, somewhat macabre even. Now William S. Sadler, that is a funny article--so I've been switching back and forth between them. Mark Arsten (talk) 03:19, 5 April 2012 (UTC)
Wow, you're an FA machine! I don't know how you do it – I'd be a nervous wreck under that kind of scrutiny. I'm happy to help from the shadows, where people are less likely to yell at me :) I won't have much time till Friday or Saturday, but I'll see what I can do. Accedietalk to me18:49, 5 April 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the help! I actually was starting to overload on FAC stress by the end of Rosenberg, possibly because it followed on the heels of the TFA stress from VHEMT. I was even dreaming about FAC last week, not what I want to be seeing in my sleep! Mark Arsten (talk) 03:08, 7 April 2012 (UTC)
Just started going through it but may have to finish tomorrow, when my brain is more awake. I'm losing count of the number of times that Anderson was "angered" by something :) Fascinating article, though – looking forward to polishing it up! Accedietalk to me03:27, 7 April 2012 (UTC)
Your help is well timed, since the GA review just started. Anderson was a very angry person, perhaps the angriest (but yes, there are a lot of other words that can be used). I've never been much of a civil war buff, but I found this pretty interesting. A lot of people don't realize the brutality that occurred during the war. Mark Arsten (talk) 03:59, 7 April 2012 (UTC)
Hey, your copyedits are looking good. I thought I'd mention, feel free to leave notes on the GA review if you see potential issues. Mark Arsten (talk) 00:13, 8 April 2012 (UTC)
All these multiple identities are getting confusing. Stop worrying so much about all the drama and intrigue and help fix this encyclopedia! I could really use your assistance on Simón Bolívar – just stumbled across it the other day and blanched with horror at the shoddy references. I'm doing what I can, but citation templates are not my forte. Happy Easter to you, too, and in the spirit of the season I hope your next resurrection will be a more stable and permanent one. Accedietalk to me23:05, 8 April 2012 (UTC)
The core issue is that the arbitrary committee can't drop the stick. They should take one of their former member's advice and start dismantling themselves. I've made something like 100,000 edits to WMF projects, mostly en:wp but about 15,000 elsewhere. I lose track, too.
The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in their May 2012 Backlog elimination drive, a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on May 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on May 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Our goal for the drive will be to eliminate January, February, and March 2011 from the queue. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits more than 4,000 words, and special awards will be given to the top 5 in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words". We hope to see you there! – Your drive coordinators: Dank, Diannaa, and Stfg.
Hi Accede,
Hope it's OK to leave you a message here. Thanks really a lot for the barnstar. Totally unexpected. I had thought that no one noticed the work on those articles. I may ask you a question or two here on in, if that's alright. Thanks again! EMP (talk) 04:36, 28 April 2012 (UTC)
P.S. - something's a little wonky with your signature... it's pointing to the wrong talk page (which is a redlink). Might want to look into that – check your preferences? Accedietalk to me05:04, 28 April 2012 (UTC)
Hey thanks for the heads-up on my gimpy sig. I finally figured it out this morning. All best EMP (talk) 18:42, 9 May 2012 (UTC)
Participation: Out of 49 people signed up for this drive so far, 26 have copy-edited at least one article. It's a smaller group than last drive, but we're making good progress. If you've signed up but haven't yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!
Progress report: We're on track to meet our targets for the drive, largely due to the efforts of Lfstevens and the others on the leaderboard. Thanks to all. We have reduced our target group of articles—January, February, and March 2011—by over half, and it looks like we will achieve that goal. Good progress is being made on the overall backlog as well, with over 500 articles copy-edited during the drive so far. The total backlog currently sits at around 3200 articles.
Hall of Fame: GOCE coordinator Diannaa was awarded a spot in the GOCE Hall of Fame this month! She has copy-edited over 1567 articles during these drives, and surpassed the 1,000,000-word mark on May 5. On to the second million! – Your drive coordinators: Dank, Diannaa and Stfg
The page itself said that several thousand pages was 0.1% (one tenth of a percent) of 3.3 million pages, not 1%, as you said in your edit summary. "Less than 0.1%" might not actually be accurate. --Yair rand (talk) 22:32, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
Ah, sorry about that, I completely missed the decimal point and read it as 1%. I'd just done the back-of-the-envelope calculation for an unrelated thing. Thanks for catching my mistake :) Accedietalk to me22:50, 22 May 2012 (UTC)

Aw, thanks! Hope to see you at Wikimania! This and this are the talks I'm giving. Both on Thursday, unfortunately, so you might not make them, but maybe... :) Accedietalk to me23:30, 23 May 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the heads up on my signature. I'm not at all fluent in Russian, so I appreciate the correction. (You're the first person to recognize that text on my signature, by the way, thank you!)
Thanks!
You're welcome! Don't worry – Yoko Kanno isn't very good at Russian, either :-P (Also props to the B5 reference, heh. Nerds unite!) Accedietalk to me02:55, 2 June 2012 (UTC)
Participation: Out of 54 people who signed up this drive, 32 copy-edited at least one article. Last drive's superstar, Lfstevens, again stood out, topping the leader board in all three categories and copy-editing over 700 articles. Thanks to all who participated! Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.
Progress report: We were once again successful in our primary goal—removing the oldest three months from the backlog—while removing 1166 articles from the queue, the second-most in our history. The total backlog currently sits at around 2600 articles, down from 8323 when we started out just over two years ago.
Coodinator election: The six-month term for our third tranche of Guild coordinators will be expiring at the end of June. We will be accepting nominations for the fourth tranche of coordinators, who will also serve a six-month term. Nominations will open starting on June 5. For complete information, please have a look at the election page. – Your drive coordinators: Dank, Diannaa, and Stfg
