The competition unfolds over five stages, collectively referred to as P.R.I.S.M, with each stage focusing on a distinct aspect of the contestants, otherwise known as players' journeys. The ultimate goal is to win the Prism Cup, which secures the team's debut in a new boy group.[1]

On April 15, SBS and F&F organized a global audition and began recruiting boys who were born before 2011 regardless of nationality starting April 22.[1]
On October 14, SBS announced that the program would premiere on November 22, after releasing the concept trailer on its social media accounts.[4] The next day, the profiles of the 42 contestants were revealed.[5]
Universe League is a K-pop survival show built around a league-style format, with 42 contestants divided into 3 teams. The show begins with "Pick", the first stage out of the five stages in P.R.I.S.M. The contestants form teams through a draft process and showcase their skills. The picked trainees form the "Starting Players". Those who are not picked need to wait until the mentors pick them to form the "Bench Players" of each team.

The next stage of P.R.I.S.M, the "SEVEN" round, is about to begin. Following their performance in the previous round, the mentors will form two 7-member groups, each performing two songs on stage. Rankings don't affect the groupings, so both starting and bench players may end up in the same team. The mentors also have the option to make changes to the lineup before the performance. Only the contestants chosen to perform are eligible for live votes, and if a player is selected for both songs, they will receive double scores.

This episode marks the beginning of the final round of P.R.I.S.M.: "Move". The top 21 players were determined through a combination of fan votes and the producers' selections. Players chosen via fan votes varied depending on their team's overall ranking, based on the combined votes from Rounds 1 to 3. Team Rhythm secured first place overall, earning the opportunity to select five players through fan votes. Team Groove, which ranked second, was able to select three players, while Team Beat, in third place, could select just one player. After this process, the producers were given the opportunity to finalize the teams. Regardless of previous trades, they could select players from any team to complete the lineup that will compete in the final episode.

The show takes place over 5 stages, collectively named P.R.I.S.M. This mission starts off with the first stage; P. for Pick, separated into two parts, the first of which being the Draft stage. This mission involves the 42 players being separated into seven teams of six players each. They each performed their assigned song in front of the director cast. Following each performance, the directors of each Team would select their First Pick from the team for their roster. If more than one Team selected the same player as their First Pick, the player could select the Team he would like to be a part of from the Teams that chose him. The Team(s) that wouldn't be chosen as a result of the player's choice could then select their Second Pick for their roster.
Immediately following the Draft team performances, the second part of the Pick stage, the Bench Test, would commence. The remaining 21 players who did not get drafted into a Team had to showcase their skills individually, 1-on-1 with the directors of each Team, to be scouted into their Bench Team. If any player was unable to be scouted into a Team by the end of the test, he would be eliminated from the show.

Starting Lineup Match (Episode 2)
This mission starts the second stage of P.R.I.S.M.; R. for Represent, separated into two parts, the first of which being the "Starting Lineup Match". This mission would have the Starting Teams of each Team compete against each other, covering representative songs of their Team's directors. Two days after the players started practicing, the directors of some teams would come in to see their progress and officially distribute parts to the team members, mainly the Killing Part/Main Vocal. Following each performance, the players are given an individual score from the live voting of the attended audience and the player with the highest individual score of each performance was crowned MVP of that stage. Also, each individual Team received a team score, calculated by adding the individual score of each player on the team together.
Immediately following the Starting Match performances, the second part of the Represent stage, the Bench Match, would commence. This stage of the mission would have the Bench Teams of each Team compete against each other, again covering representative songs of their Team's directors. Many things are the same to the Starting Match. In two days time after the players started practicing, the directors of some teams would come in to see their progress and officially distribute parts to the team members. Also following each performance, the players are given an individual score from the live voting of the attended audience and the player with the highest individual score of each stage was crowned MVP of the performance again. Identical as well, each individual Team received a team score, adding the individual score of each player on the team for the total team score.
This mission starts the third stage of P.R.I.S.M.; I. for Intercept. This mission would have the Starting Teams of each Team perform a song produced by the directors of their team, competing against another Team's Bench Team. A week before the performance day, the directors of most of the teams would come in to see their progress of their Team's Starting Team, and the Bench Team competing against them. Following each pair of performances, each individual Team received a team score from the live voting of the attended audience of 400, which had them choosing between each pair of two competing Teams. The winning Team of each matchup would get to officially release the song on streaming platforms.

Universe Holiday: Talent Show
Taking a break from the competitive of the nature of survival show competitions, Universe Holiday was created to give the remaining trainees a fun experience amidst the stress and practice. Unaffecting towards the official competition, for the second part of Universe Holiday, in a talent show format, the players, in self made groups of two to five players each, presented prepared performances to the rest of the teams. The winners were determined through the votes of the contestants themselves and they received clothing exchange vouchers for
Returning to the P.R.I.S.M format, this mission marks the beginning of the fourth stage, S. for Seven, separated into two parts. The directors will start by forming two draft units, which aren't finalized yet, with each consisting of seven players, for each part of this stage of P.R.I.S.M. The directors have the discretion to assign any player to one performance, both performances, or exclude them entirely from any unit. Both of the units will perform another original song produced by the directors of their Teams themselves. If a player were to want to perform in another stage, including what they already have, if not any at all, they would still be able to practice the songs they were interested in. Two weeks prior to performance day, the directors would come in to see how each of their originally assembled units have progressed. Here they would get to officially designate the final seven members of each of the units. If the directors felt anything was lacking, they had the freedom to add and remove any players of any team and replace them with another player. All the units for the first song introduced for each Team would go head to head in the Unit 1 Match. After each performance, each team receives a team score from the attended audience of 400, with a maximum of 2,800 points, which had them voting for the players in any team if they think that particular player did a good job. The team score was calculated by summing up the individual scores of each player in the team.

Unit 2 Match (Episode 8)
Immediately after the Unit 1 match, the second part of the Seven stage, the Unit 2 match, would begin. In this phase of the mission, the Unit 2 groups from each team would compete by performing songs associated with their team directors. Much like the first Unit match, players receive individual scores based on live audience voting after each performance. Similarly, each team's total score is calculated by summing the individual scores of all players on the team. Following the Unit 2 Match, using the team scores of R, I, and S. of P.R.I.S.M added together, the final team ranking of the league match would be decided.

Represent Results (Episode 3)
The benefit for the final winning team this mission was to avoid getting elimination strikes, which are Yellow Cards, in this league-style format, and gaining Trade Tickets, which allow the winning team and the runner-up team to trade players with teams ranked lower than them. The final Team score was calculated by adding the score of the Starting Team and Bench Team together. Whichever Team got the highest final score would be exempt from having any of their players receiving any Yellow Cards. For the 2nd and 3rd place Teams, the bottom 3 contestants in the 2nd place Team, and the bottom 6 contestants in the 3rd place Team, in terms of individual points, would all receive 1 Yellow Card each. Once any player receives 2 Yellow Cards further down the line, he will be eliminated.

Seven Results (Episode 8)
As in the previous round, the winning team in this mission would avoid receiving Yellow Cards and earn additional Trade Tickets. The final team score was calculated by combining the on-site live voting scores with the online voting results from the second voting period. If any player performed in both units during Round 3, their individual score will be added to the team score twice. Once again, the team with the highest score was exempt from having any players receive Yellow Cards. However, for the second-place team, the three players with the lowest individual scores, and for the third-place team, the six players with the lowest individual scores, each received one Yellow Card. Any player who accumulated a second Yellow Card faced immediate elimination.

Like last time, three and six players from the 2nd and 3rd placing teams respectively are given yellow cards. If any player received a second yellow card in this mission, they will be immediately eliminated, regardless of their ranking amongst the other players.
Seven contestants from each team are chosen by both fan votes and directors' choice to comprise their final team to compete in the finale. The team with the highest score from aggregating the votes for every round will have five fixed members from the fan votes while the teams placing second and third will have three and one fixed member(s) respectively. The rest of the lineup will be completed by the choices of the directors who are free to pick members from any team regardless of rank. Those who were not selected are immediately eliminated.
