The film was officially announced in October 2024. Principal photography commenced the following month in Pollachi. The film has music composed by Sai Abhyankkar, cinematography and editing handled by G. K. Vishnu and R. Kalaivanan respectively.
Before the release of Kanguva in late 2024, it was reported that RJ Balaji had met Suriya and narrated a script which impressed the actor. The project was reported to feature the script that was narrated to Vijay and would commence after Suriya completed Retro.[1] The project would reportedly be funded by S. R. Prabhu and S. R. Prakash Babu's Dream Warrior Pictures.[2][3] That October, production was reported to begin the following month as Retro had wrapped the same month.[4] The same month, the project was officially announced.[5] The company made a public announcement on 14 October 2024, confirming the project, tentatively titledSuriya 45.[6][7] In late November, G. K. Vishnu was confirmed as the cinematographer,[8] and Rathna Kumar as co-writer.[9] Editor R. Kalaivanan, action choreographer Vikram Mor and art director Arun Venjaramoodu were announced on 16 December 2024.[10]
Casting
In November, Trisha was reported to have been cast as the lead actress, in her fourth collaboration with Suriya,[11] and her participation was confirmed only on 14 December.[12] The next day Indrans and Swasika were officially announced, although the latter had earlier hinted at her casting via social media.[13][14] On 15 December, Yogi Babu and Sshivada were announced,[15][16] and the next day Natty Subramaniam,[17]Supreeth Reddy and Anagha Maaya Ravi were announced.[18]
The soundtrack was initially announced to be composed by A. R. Rahman, in what would have been his first collaboration with Balaji and fourth with Suriya after Aayutha Ezhuthu (2004), Sillunu Oru Kaadhal (2006) and 24 (2016).[21] However, Rahman opted out for reasons unknown, and on 9 December, Sai Abhyankkar, in his second film as composer after the yet-to-be filmed Benz, was announced as the new composer.[22]
