Sphumelele Shamase (born 16 January 2002) is a South African soccer player who plays as a winger for A Lyga side FC Gintra and the South Africa women's national team.[1]

Club career

UJ Ladies F.C

Shamase currently plays for the UJ Ladies F.C.

In 2023, she was the top scorer in the 2023 Hollywoodbets Super League finishing with 22 goals.[2]

FC Gintra

On 6 May 2024 she joined A Lyga side FC Gintra.[3] She made her debut in a 3-1 win over Rīgas FS on 8 May 2024.[4] She won the A Lyga title with the team in her first season.

In her first appearance in the UEFA Women's Champions League on 4 September 2024, Shamase scored a hat-trick in a 5-0 victory over Moldovan champions Anenii Noi.[5]

Shamase finished her first season in Europe with 12 league goals in 13 appearances for FC Gintra, with 17 goals in 21 appearances across all competitions.[6]

International career

In 2017, she was selected in the Bantwana squad for the FIFA U/17 Women's World Cup Qualifiers.[7] Shamase competed for Bantwana at the 2018 FIFA U/17 Women's World Cup.[8]

In 2022, she competed for the South African women's national team at the 2022 COSAFA Women's Championship were they finished as runners-up to Zambia. Shamase scored 2 goals in the tournament.[9]

In 2023, she was part of the team that were selected for the 2023 COSAFA Women's Championship where they existed in the group stages and was also added to the senior national team for the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of nations qualifier against Burkina Faso.[10][11]

Personal life

She has an identical twin sister, Thubelihle Shamase, who also plays soccer.[12]
