SMK Bahang (Penampang)
SMK Bahang is a secondary school in Sabah which is located at Penampang, between Donggongon Town and the city of Kota Kinabalu. The school is named after the village of Kampung Bahang, which is located near Kampung Koidupan and the KDCA (Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association). A majority of the students, including the staff, come from Penampang. Some of them however, are from Putatan, Luyang and even as far as from the central city of Sabah, Kota Kinabalu. HistorySMK Bahang was established in December 1994 and was officially opened by the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Mohd. Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak, who was then the Minister of Education Malaysia, with the motto "Together Realizing the Educational Excellence" (Bersama Merealisasikan Kecemerlangan Pendidikan). At the end of its of construction, the school had 24 classrooms. On the opening day, six classrooms opened to accommodate 272 students from graduate students while a number of passed PMR students from other schools were placed here to further their studies in Form 4. In 1995, a special education class was established in January. ClassroomsCurrently, SMK Bahang has 28 classrooms for the lower and upper secondary students, and four classrooms for special education. Each form has 10 classes that are named after nilai murni, or virtues. Students are arranged in their classrooms according to their grades and subjects. As of 2024, SMK Bahang has been granted acceptance to implement the KRK (Kelas Rancangan Khas) program for students born in 2011 and later. However, the school has yet to commence the implementation process, as it is currently still accommodating more students for the program. The list of classes, from top to bottom is: Wawasan, Perdana, Bestari, Cemerlang, Dinamik, Dedikasi, Prihatin, Lestari, Kreatif, and Harmoni. As of 2024, the upper secondary students (Form 4 and Form 5) have 20 classrooms combined. The first 6 classes offers elective subjects while the other 4 classes follow the standard SPM syllabus. As of June of 2024, the principal has made initiatives for all Form 4 and Form 5 classes in 2025 to make Islamic Worldviews (Tasawwur Islam) and Visual Arts Education (Pendidikan Seni Visual) a mandatory subject. Morning and Afternoon SessionTo accommodate more than 2000 students in one school day, SMK Bahang follows the standard Malaysian school procedure by splitting students into the morning session (sesi pagi) and afternoon session (sesi petang). Form 3, 4 and 5 students sit for the morning session everyday starting at 6:50 a.m. whilst the Form 1 and 2 students come to school at 11:30 a.m. for the afternoon session. Most forms share a classroom with the morning or afternoon session students. Below is a table that shows the classes that share the same classrooms from different sessions.
Renovations and Infrastructure UpgradesSMK Bahang has eight science labs; from Chemistry, Biology to Physics. There are two teacher's office. One located at Block A, and the other in Block C. As of 2023, many renovations and new constructions were made by principal Haji Mohamad Al-Beari Haji Binsin, which are listed below:
Overall, many rooms were transferred to different blocks, such as the library to Block A. As of 2024, the current principal Haji Mohamad Al-Beari Haji Binsin plans to renovate the school hall, as well as constructing a music room (bilik muzik). PrefectsSMK Bahang offers a wide assortment of prefect roles to students that fit certain criterias, such as having a high sense of confidence, notable self-esteem and their ability to be leaders. Each prefect role has their standardized colour, which heavily influences the uniform they wear to school. For example, Pengawas sekolah, having light blue as their main colour, wear light blue uniforms to school. The available prefects are as follow:
While Pengawas Kiosk and Pengawas TVPSS aren't considered an official prefect in SMK Bahang, their efforts and contributions to the school are enough and comparable to those that are official prefects. Pengawas SekolahPengawas Sekolah are the main prefects of a school. They help the teachers to maintain the discipline of students in SMK Bahang anytime, especially during recess. Each year, a Ketua Pelajar from the Pengawas Sekolah are picked as a representative and leading role-model for all students in the school. The standardized colour for Pengawas Sekolah is light blue. Pengawas Pusat SumberPengawas Pusat Sumber are the librarians of the school, located on the 2nd floor of Block A. They manage student matters regarding the library such as borrowing and returning books from the library. The standardized colour for Pengawas Pusat Sumber is gray. Pengawas KoperasiPengawas Koperasi are the students that are in charge of running the Koperasi (School Cooperative) during recess, before and after school hours. As of 2024, Pengawas Koperasi don't have a standardized colour yet. This is subject to change in the future. Pembimbing Rakan SebayaPembimbing Rakan Sebaya, while absent of the title "Pengawas" in their name, are the prefects in charge of helping the school counseling unit, as well as managing special events for the school. The standardized colour for Pembimbing Rakan Sebaya is purple. Pengawas SurauPengawas Surau are the prefects in charge of managing the school's Surau Ar-Rahman. The standardized color for Pengawas Surau is maroon. Pengawas Pusat AksesPengawas Pusat Akses are the prefects in charge of managing matters in the Pusat Akses, or the ICT room located on the ground floor in Block A. The standardized colour for Pengawas Pusat Akses is dark blue. Pengawas SPBTPengawas SPBT, also known as Pengawas Skim Pinjaman Buku Teks are the prefects in charge of managing matters related to the annual borrowing and returning of textbooks. They operate inside the BOSS room (Bilik Operasi Skim Pinjaman Buku Teks Sekolah). The standardized colour for Pengawas SPBT is black. Pengawas KioskPengawas Kiosk has a similar job to that of the Pengawas Koperasi. The difference, however is that they operate near Pondok Kiosk and the Canteen. Some might call them the "Pengawas Kantin Sekolah" as they are mainly on duty during recess and after school hours. Pengawas TVPSSPengawas TVPSS, though not an official pengawas, are under the branch of Pengawas Pusat Sumber. They are the students who help with the school magazine, such as interviewing students and collecting information throughout the school year. Fire of 31 December 2004On 31 December 2004, SMK Bahang had a tragedy where the highest floor of block A caught on fire. Prior to that, the school had another fire in 2002.[1] This however, did not stop the school session of 2005. Computer labs, science labs and school canteens were used for teaching and learning process, even as far as starting their sessions 200 meters away in SK Bahang Penampang for Form 3. Sport HousesThe sport houses, also known as rumah sukan are named after the colour of multiple gemstones. Previously, SMK Bahang had six houses, but over time the school has opted to abolish two of these houses, namely Mutiara (orange) and Kristal (purple). The four houses would typically compete against each other on sports day in Kompleks Sukan Penampang, Donggongon. However, in recent years, the school has steered towards a more open side to host school events beyond its immediate vicinity. This shift was evident in 2023 when the sports day took place at the Kompleks Sukan Likas, marking a departure from the usual venue. The school sport houses are as follow:
School Songs"Kami Anak Warisan" officially known as the school song for SMK Bahang, was made in 1994. It is mandatory for all students to memorize the lyrics for the school as it is sung during assembly, and sung everyday before class for morning session students. The song, "Perpaduan SMEKBAH" was made in 2024 as SMK Bahang was selected to represent Sabah for the Pengiktirafan 5 Bintang Bagi Sekolah Perpaduan Program in 2024.
