Mizanur Rahman Shamim (Bengali: মিজানুর রহমান শামীম) is a Lieutenant General in the Bangladesh Army and incumbent Chief of General Staff (CGS) at army headquarters. Prior to join CGS, he was the Principal Staff Officer (PSO) of the, Armed Forces Division. He had served as General Officer commanding (GOC) of the 9th Infantry Division and Area Commander of the Savar Area.

Shamim served as GOC of the 24th Infantry Division and Area Commander of the Chattogram Area. He also served as Director General of Bangladesh Ansar and the Village Defence Party.[1] He also served as the GOC of the 19th Infantry Division and Area Commander of the Ghatail Area. He served as the Director of National Security Intelligence (NSI) and commanded one Infantry Brigade in Bogura. He received a gallantry award Bir Protik for conducting an operation in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.[2]

Career

Shamim was the GOC of the 19th Infantry Division in 2019.[3] He was the Ghatail Area Commander of the Bangladesh Army.[4] He oversaw a joint Bangladeshi-Indian army exercise.[5]

Shamim was appointed the Director General of Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defense Party on 29 July 2020.[6] He replaced Major General Kazi Sharif Kaikobad.[6] He led the unit during the COVID-19 pandemic in Bangladesh.[7] In December 2021, he distributed books written by President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to officers of Bangladesh Ansar and the Village Defence Party.[8] As Chairman of Ansar-VDP Unnayan, he handed over Bangladeshi Tk 42.5 million Sheikh Mohammad Salim Ullah, secretary of the Financial Institution Division, to spend on government development programs.[9] On 19 July 2022, he was posted to the 24th Infantry Division as GOC and Area Commander of the Chattogram Area.[10]

On 6 August 2024, Shamim was appointed Chief of the General Staff of Bangladesh Army following the fall of the Awami League government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.[11] He was serving as the Principal Staff Officer of the Prime Minister's Office, Armed Forces Division.[12]

Personal life

General Shameem is married to Rehana Parveen Mukti. He is a father of a daughter and a son.[13]
