History
Founded in May 1996 by Nepali-Australian businessman Shesh Ghale and his wife Jamuna Gurung, MIT initially offered vocational education and training courses.
In 2004, MIT gained registration to deliver higher education courses from the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA). This transferred to the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) in 2012 when the state-based higher education regulatory framework transitioned to a national framework.[30]
The institute's governance structure includes a board of directors overseeing higher education operations, with Emeritus Professor Wayne Robinson serving as the board chair as of April 2021. Co-founder Shesh Ghale holds the position of CEO, managing the institute's day-to-day operations.
MIT’s corporate and academic governance structures ensure that MIT is operating effectively and sustainably and that we maintain the highest standards in the quality of our teaching and learning. A high-level organisational chart of MIT is available here at its "Governance page"..

Accreditations
MIT degrees are accredited by respected institutions, these include:
Throughout its history, MIT has fostered strategic partnerships with various universities to enhance its academic offerings. The institution expanded its offerings in 1999 to include higher education courses in partnership with Edith Cowan University.
Melbourne Institute of Technology collaborated with Federation University Australia (FedUni), formerly the University of Ballarat, from July 2000 - 2024. A collaboration was established allowing MIT to offer FedUni programs at its campuses.[31]
This partnership involved FedUni controlling course quality and conferring qualifications, while MIT provided facilities, lecturers, tutors, and student services.
From 2003 to 2008, the institution served as a third-party delivery partner for the University of New England, providing undergraduate and postgraduate Information Technology programs at its Sydney campus.
Future Aspirations
Ambitious plans for growth were announced in October 2020 by CEO Shesh Ghale, who set a goal for MIT to achieve university status within five years.
This aspiration reflects the institution's commitment to academic excellence and its desire to expand its educational offerings. To support this vision, MIT has been investing in research capabilities, as evidenced by the introduction of research-focused master's programs in Business and ICT in 2023.
These initiatives aim to enhance the institution's academic profile and position it as a leading provider of higher education in Australia.
