Mitchell grew up in Kansas City, Kansas and initially attended Bishop Miege High School.[1] He averaged 21.6 points, 8.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.8 blocks per game as a sophomore.[2] Mitchell won the DiRenna Award as the top player in the Kansas City area after averaging 18 points and six rebounds per game as Bishop Miege won the Kansas Class 4A state championship.[3][4] He transferred to Sunrise Christian Academy in Bel Aire, Kansas prior to the beginning of his senior year.[5] Mitchell averaged 17.6 points with 6.3 rebounds per game in his only year at Sunrise Christian.[6] He played in the 2022 McDonald's All-American Boys Game and tied as the game's leading scorer with 19 points.[7][8] Mitchell was also named a second-team All-American by Sports Illustrated as a senior.[9]
Recruiting
Mitchell was rated a five-star recruit by Rivals and 247Sports and a four-star recruit by ESPN.[10][11] On December 10, 2021, Mitchell committed to playing college basketball for Duke while considering offers from Kansas, Missouri, and UCLA.[12]
Mitchell entered his freshman season at Duke as a starter at forward.[13][14] He started 35 games and averaged 9.1 points per game and 4.5 rebounds per game while shooting 46.9% from the field during his freshman season.[15] In Mitchell’s sophomore year, he started 32 games out of 33 games played and averaged 11.6 points per game and 6 rebounds per game while shooting 54% from the field.[16]
On April 9, 2024, Mitchell entered the transfer portal.[17] Mitchell committed to the Missouri Tigers on April 19, 2024.[18]
