Malaysia National Women's League (Malay: Liga Wanita Nasional) is a women's football league in Malaysia since its establishment in 2022 it is run by Football Association of Malaysia together with the Ministry of Youth and Sports.[1][2][3] The League was created to provide a safe football atmosphere for women, in addition to being a platform to promote the amateur women's football scene in the Malaysia.[4][5][6][7]

History

A women's football competition has been held in Malaysia since 1960.[8] The inaugural season was competed by four teams from Perak, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Malacca. A competition trophy was only introduced in 1961, contributed by the Straits Times.

Women Football Association of Malaysia (PBWM) was officially registered in December 1974, and the first president was the Tun Sharifah Rodziah. A proper league was officially held in 2022 when PBWM introduced the Malaysia National Women's League.[9]

Competition format

Teams receive three points for a win and one point for a draw. No points are awarded for a loss. Teams are ranked by total points, then goal difference, and then goals scored. At the end of each season, the club with the most points is crowned league champion. Since 2023 there are 6 teams in single league. Each club plays the others twice (home and away) for a total of 10 games.

In 2022 Season The winner and the best top two teams from each zone qualify to Piala Tun Sharifah Rodziah.

In 2023, the format for the new club competition called AFC Women's Champions League was unveiled. Starting with the 2024–25 edition, Sabah FA became the first representative club from Malaysia to participate the competition.[10]
