Los Retros is an American indie rock band formed in Oxnard, California, in 2017. The band was founded by frontman, Mauri Tapia, the band used to include two other band members, Chaisson Nuusolia (who left in 2022),[3] and Brayan.[4]
They are most known for the viral single, "Someone To Spend Time With", with almost 200 million streams on Spotify.[5]
History
Los Retros started out as a trio back in 2017, originally named Retrospect, the original lineup was Mauri Tapia, Chaisson Nuusolia, and Brayan. The same year, in December 2, they released the album Retrospect, on the music sharing site Bandcamp.[6] They eventually changed the name of the band, because there was already a band by the same name.[7]
Between the years 2018 and 2019, they released the singles "Likewise", "Beyond the Dreams", "???", "Someone To Spend Time With".[8][9][10][11] The track "Someone To Spend Time With", which was the first piece of music material he did with the imprint Stones Throw, gave Los Retros a rise in popularity, and soon after, he was touring with the musician Cuco.[7]
In the same year of the single being released, Los Retros released the Retrospect EP,[Note 2] and released 2 singles from the EP, "Friends", and "Never Have Enough".[12] 6 months later, Los Retros produced for Sudan Archives' critically acclaimed debut album Athena, specifically the song "Stuck".[13]
The year after, on June 18, Los Retros releases the Everlasting EP, in which one single released, being "New Humanity", and the music videos for the songs "The Messiah",[14] and "Sweet Honey".[15] In 2021, Los Retros released the Looking Back EP, which featured songs from the first album Retrospect, and some new material added in. For this release, it came with a color vinyl.[16] The EP also came with 2 singles, "Amtrak", and "It's Got To Be You".[17][18]
The same year they released the single "Solo Tu", which went along with a music video.[19] In 2022, Chaisson left the band, which left Mauri as the only member.[3] On Instagram, Mauri records videos of him working on an new Los Retros album, but nothing has been released to the public.
Musical style
In most publications, Los Retros takes influences from old, 1970's latino artists, like Jeanette, and Los Ángeles Negros.[20][21] The name of the band, "Los Retros", also takes influence from Los Angeles Negros.[21] In an interview with Ones to Watch, Mauri says,
One thing that stuck to my mind was, [what] my parents would play, which was like, Spanish rock, from like the, 70's, and now, I just so now happen to really like those tunes, and realize, I guess my maturity somehow kicked in, and I tend to make tunes just like those. [22]
