The structurally deficient dam was the most downstream barrier on the Town River to fish migrating from Narragansett Bay . Its removal opened 10 miles (16 km) of river to fish passage as well as 354 acres (143 ha) of spawning habitat in Lake Nippenicket .[ 8]
