John Mortimore (footballer)
John Henry Mortimore (23 September 1934 – 26 January 2021) was an English football player and manager.[1] CareerMortimore played as a centre half in the Football League for Chelsea, with whom he scored 10 goals from 279 games in all competitions between 1956 and 1965[2] and won the 1965 Football League Cup,[3] and for Queens Park Rangers.[1] As manager, he had spells at Portsmouth,[4] Benfica, where he won the national championship in both 1976–77 and 1986–87, and the Portuguese Cup in 1986 and 1987,[5][6] Belenenses[7] and, in a very brief stint as joint caretaker, Southampton.[8] He also coached at clubs including Sunderland,[1] Chelsea and Southampton,[9] where he eventually became club president.[10] He died on 26 January 2021, aged 86.[11][12] HonoursPlayer
