After promotion to associate professor at the University of Auckland, Coverdale moved to Baylor College of Medicine in 2000, rising to full professor.[2] He completed an MD from the University of Otago in 2004, with a thesis entitled 'Family planning, sexually transmitted infections, and ethical challenges in managing decisions about contraception and pregnancy when patients have a major mental disorder.'[3]
He has expertise in human trafficking,[4] and he founded and co-directs the Baylor Anti-Human Trafficking Program.[5] He is an educator and a senior editor of the journals Academic Medicine and Academic Psychiatry.[1][6]
