Gutierrezia is a genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae , native to western North America and western South America.[ 4] Plants of this genus are known generally as snakeweeds or matchweeds .[ 5] [ 1] [ 6] [ 7] [ 8] [ 9] Some species have been called greasewood .[ 10] They are annual or perennial plants or subshrubs with yellow or white flowers.[ 4]
These plants contain chemical compounds which can be toxic to livestock and some are considered weeds.[ 11]
