Grace Assembly of God
Grace Assembly of God (Abbreviation: GAOG) (Chinese: 神召会恩典堂), is one of the 48 affiliated members of the Assemblies of God of Singapore.[1][2] It operates from two locations viz. Grace @ Tanglin and Grace @ Bukit Batok. The former is located at 355 Tanglin Road; [3] the latter is situated at 1 Bukit Batok West Avenue 4.[4] HistoryGrace Assembly of God had its beginnings in 1950.[5] Missionaries Vallance and Lula Baird started a mission at 50 Odin Square, off Alexander Road. [6] It started off as a "Story Hour" in Cantonese, for the children in the Alexander estate. Months later, church services were conducted in Cantonese. They were attended by the children’s parents and neighbours.[8] As more adults showed an interest in Christianity, a Bible study and prayer meeting was introduced as a mid-week service.[9] By the end of 1951, the church attendance was about thirty, which included adults, teenagers, and young children.[10] When the Bairds left Singapore in 1951,[11] Lau To Chan was recommended by the Principal of the Hong Kong Ecclesia Bible Institute to manage the place.[12] In 1954, Rev. Jarmilla (Jean) Wagner, a Czechoslovakian missionary was sent by the Assemblies of God, USA to run the Alexander (Odin Square) Mission.[13] Shortly after, she rented a place along Prince Philip Avenue as the Alexander work required more space.[14] Thereafter, the church continued to grow. In 1958, the church secured a 41,000 square feet property at 355 Tanglin Road for $40,000.[16] The two works merged in the Tanglin property and named it Grace Assembly of God.[17] In 1961, Rev. Wagner passed away. After her death, Lau To Chan left GAOG to start Kim Tian Church.[18] Grace Assembly then came under the leadership of Rev. David Nyien (1962-1966), Rev. Oh Beng Khee (1966-1990), Rev. Dr. David Lim (1990-2011) and Pastor Calvin Lee (2011-2019). On 31 December 2019, Rev. Dr. Wilson Teo took over as Senior Pastor of the church.[19] Church ServicesGrace Assembly of God conducts several multi-lingual services over the weekend. All services involve lay participation.
