At the time of the 2006 National Census, Chukam's population was 2,869 in 793 households, when it was a village in Chukam Rural District[b] of the former Khomam District, Rasht County.[5] The following census in 2011 counted 3,222 people in 994 households.[6] The 2016 census measured the population of the village as 3,096 people in 1,019 households.[2]
In August 2019, the district was separated from the county in the establishment of Khomam County, which was divided into two districts of two rural districts each, with Khomam as its capital and only city. Chukam and the rural district were transferred to the new Chukam District.[4] In March 2023, the village of Bala Mahalleh-ye Chukam in Chukam District was elevated to the status of a city as Chukam.[7]
