OK ... there's more of these than I thought (prolific little bugger!) ... apparently, this editor has single-handedly populated Category:Cuban contemporary artists, since they all seem to have the same introduction ... I'm using the Warn-bio protocol and tracking them while I do cleanups and try to assist the editor, who apparently speaks English as a second language ... here's the stencil I'm using:
I notice that the external link spam to cubancontemporaryart.com has been undone. As to the 140 articles. I don't feel too strongly about them. They are somewhat promotional, yet within their limitations they seem to be done in a scholarly way. (They usually don't have WP:RS, though a Google search for the artist's name will often come up with interesting stuff). Many of these people seem to have exhibited in America. It is possible to think of these articles as a 'to-do list' for future work, where they can provide clues for somebody who wants to write about Cuban artists more seriously. That would be in the spirit of there is no deadline. If you want to nominate some of them for deletion, you of course have the ability. But if ArleArt goes on to create even more articles, let's talk. EdJohnston (talk) 02:51, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, EdJohnston ... it looks as if ArleArt (talk·contribs) has been unheard from since 2007-12-23, (perhaps the WP:COI/N review scared them off :-), so I don't think that they'll be back Real Soon Now ... I may hang {{Warn-article}} on the first couple of dozen, but I won't bother to leave beau coup copies of {{Warn-editor}} on their talk page ... after a week, I may {{Prod}} a few to see if that generates any interest in improving them, but I don't think that any of them qualify for A7 speedy delete, and I'm not interested enough to take any of them to AfDunless it's as a mass deletion that lists at least a dozen articles ,e.g., no Google hits except to the aforementioned spam site & Wikipedia (these articles are listed on Google already!) ... but that's a project for Some Other day, since like DGG, I'm dealing with a family medical emergency at the moment, and ohana must always come First ... Most of the ones in the list above have been deleted either by dated {{Prod}} or {{AfD}} ... here is a new list from contributions by 169.158.224.133 (talk·contribs):
I have put {{Warn-article}} on each of the articles' discussion pages, but since ArleArt appears to be MIA, I will not bother with {{Warn-editor}} tags, but instead will let BJBot update it with PROD and AfD notifications ... I have also identified some support editors:
New information found from Google on artists in A-D in this category
Out of the 15 artists who are sorted into A-D in this category, I found some info from Google that might help show their notability. I was not impressed by anything I found for the other 11, and wouldn't object if those articles were deleted. Note that the articles shown in A-D in the category listing are usually sorted by the first name.
For an artist to be included in www.cubancontemporaryart.com I believe is not a distinction. It looks to me that it's a paid advertising site; it's not the same as being featured in a gallery.
He has a well-designed web site that shows some of his work. [3]. He is in some permanent museum collections in the USA. His work was exhibited at Florida International University: [4].
(WP article is only #2, they have Google hits). This is a circus performing group. They have toured in a lot of countries. [5]. See an online article (in Spanish) in a Nicaraguan newspaper. [6]. There are more hits that could be studied.
His work is featured in the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art. He is interviewed in a 2006 article in the Miami Herald. [7]
It would be helpful if others who are interested in this group of artists could scan further down through the category and see what they can turn up via Google. I'm willing to do a default 'Keep' on anybody where the WP article is not the #1 hit on their name! Out of all the painters checked out recently, Rubén Torres Llorca is the star (of Google) since his Wikipedia article is the #6 hit on his name! EdJohnston (talk) 02:35, 2 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I looked at this some time ago. I checked the web site which was on all the articles and it seemed like vanity site, so I presumed the artists in the article would be taken from it. However, the ones I checked I didn't find on it. I did find them on the Spanish wiki and the articles on here looked like a translation. I concluded the web site was being spammed, but not the artists, who were a WP:Coatrack for the site. This will need to be checked more thoroughly, but I hope it may be a help. Tyrenius (talk) 04:42, 2 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It seems like the list may be notable people, who were added by someone who added them in an inappropriate way. I am hoping we don't see more rounds of wholesale AFDs without the nominator taking the time to actually CHECK to see if they are notable. Pharmboy (talk) 12:55, 2 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
See this page or an alternative approach to the problem, namely list all the articles, get a team of editors and over a period of time work through them, either approving or suggesting for deletion. If it's an obvious case, then admins on the team can do a speedy delete. Tyrenius (talk) 17:40, 2 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Now that's what I'm talkin' 'bout! :-) Sounds like a Plan ... I'll make a sandbox page that lists all of the articles currently in this catagory, and then we can decide where is the best place to post it and look for contributors ... Happy Editing! —72.75.72.63 (talk·contribs) 20:20, 2 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK ... see User talk:72.75.72.63/Cuban artists for the list ... you can just put the link on the appropriate project page, since there are 117 articles in the list ... I took German in high school, not Spanish, so I won't be able to do much except follow behind the others and do WikiGnome cosmetics and such for references found by Some Other Editor ... OTOH, I hope that by taking the time to create this list, I have shown good faith. :-) —72.75.72.63 (talk·contribs) 20:56, 2 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've gone through and Prod'd a large number of them. My criteria was generally, did they seem unique or did they win a major international prize (and major to me included things like artist in resident at a university). Also, I don't think I Re-Prod'd any. MBisanztalk09:05, 3 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
