Darren Criss und die Theatergruppe StarKid Productions

StarKid Productions, bekannt unter dem Namen Team StarKid, ist eine amerikanische Theatergruppe mit Sitz in Chicago, die 2009 von Darren Criss, Nick Lang, Brian Holden und Matt Lang an der University of Michigan gegründet wurde. Die Truppe inszeniert Musicals und Komödien mit selbst geschriebenen Drehbüchern und Liedern. Die Geschichten finden ihre Inspiration hauptsächlich in der Popkultur.

Geschichte

Weltweit bekannt wurde StarKid Productions 2009 mit A Very Potter Musical, einer Parodie der Harry-Potter-Bücher, die in mehreren Teilen bei YouTube hochgeladen und seitdem insgesamt über 100 Millionen Mal angeklickt wurde. Daraufhin folgten weitere Musicals. Das Album zum Musical Me and My Dick wurde 2010 das erste von Studenten produzierte Album[1], das in den Billboard Hot 100 landete. In der ersten Woche befand sich das Album auf Platz 11 der „Top Cast Albums“-Charts. Starship erreichte hier 2011 eine Nummer-eins-Platzierung. Das Album zur SPACE Tour erreichte 2012 Platz zwei, das Album zur Apocalyptour im gleichen Jahr Platz drei. Firebringer stand 2016 auf Platz sechs.

Bis heute hat Team Starkid zwölf Musicals sowie zwei Webserien, zwei Livetourneen, drei Sketch-Comedy-Shows, eine Liveshow und eine szenische Lesung inszeniert. 2008 wurde außerdem das Theaterstück The Hobbit 2: The Lord of the Rings produziert. Während A Very Potter Musical, Me and My Dick und A Very Potter Sequel noch in Ann Arbor, Michigan aufgeführt wurden, präsentierten StarKid Productions Starship, Holy Musical Batman!, Twisted, Ani: A Parody, The Trail to Oregon und Firebringer in Chicago.A Very Potter Senior Year wurde 2012 auf der LeakyCon in Chicago einmalig inszeniert. The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals war 2018 das erste Musical der Gruppe, das in Los Angeles aufgeführt wurde, Black Friday folgte ein Jahr später. Der dritte Teil der Hatchetfield-Reihe, Nerdy Prudes Must Die, war ursprünglich für 2020 geplant, konnte jedoch aufgrund der COVID-19-Pandemie erst 2023 aufgeführt werden. In der Zwischenzeit produzierte StarKid sowohl zwei Staffeln der ebenfalls in Hatchetfield spielenden, per Videokonferenz aufgenommenen Musicalserie Nightmare Time als auch das vierzigminütige Musical A VHS Christmas Carol, eine Adaption von Charles Dickens’ Eine Weihnachtsgeschichte, welche ursprünglich im Homeoffice aufgenommen, später aber auch auf der Bühne aufgeführt wurde.

Die Theatergruppe tritt regulär auf der LeakyCon (GeekyCon), einer Convention der Nerd- und Geekszene, auf. Darüber hinaus waren sie mehrmals Gast auf der Ring*Con in Bonn sowie auf diversen anderen Conventions und Musikfestivals.[2] Team Starkid hat alle Musicals auf YouTube hochgeladen, damit sie für alle frei zugängig sind. Der Youtube-Kanal der Gruppe hat über 770.000 Abonnenten und mehr als 330 Millionen Aufrufe (Stand Oktober 2023).[3]
