Koloni pada zaman kuno

Laut tengah pada sekitar abad ke-6 SM-kota-kota Foenisia diwarnai kuning, kota-kota Yunani diwarnai merah, dan kota-kota lain diwarnai abu-abu.

Koloni pada zaman kuno adalah kota-negara yang didirikan dari kota-induk ("metropolis"-nya), bukan dari sebuah teritorial besar. Ikatan antara koloni dan metropolis-nya masih sering tertutup, tetapi menghimpun bentuk spesifik.[1] Namun, tak seperti zaman kolonialisme Eropa pada awal dan akhir era modern, koloni kuno biasanya berdaulat dan memerintah sendiri dari penaungnya.
