Yohanes merupakan keturunan Yunani[3][4][5] dan berasal dari Rossano, Calabria, Italia selatan.[5]

Karena ia bukan Paus yang sah, tiga Paus berikutnya yang dinamai Yohanes, Yohanes XVII, Yohanes XVIII dan Yohanes XIX, memakai nomor jabatan XVI, XVII dan XVIII
